CLEVELAND HEIGHTS

Cleveland Heights will be a physical, versatile team that offensively could be one of the area’s

bigger teams up front with Division I recruit Justin Wodtly and Cullen Martin back in the trenches.

The Tigers use Wodtly at multiple positions on both offense and defense, including as a tough to

stop 270-pound fullback.

Cleveland Heights graduated versatile quarterback Josh Harris (899 yards rushing, 503 yards

passing), but Elijah Fowlkes (sophomore) will emerge as one of the area’s top backs in a triple

option attack.

The passing game will look different with two transfers at receiver in Jiovanny Holmes and Ju'Ruan

Hardin.

Defensively, the Tigers are loaded with talent, especially in the secondary.

Medina, which handled Cleveland Heights in Week 1 last year, is a high-powered offense led by

Ryan Fischer. He came in last year at quarterback as a St. Vincent-St. Mary transfer and threw for

big-yardage games, as the Bees opened with a 2-0 start and closed with three straight wins.

Noah Nunn returns to lead the defense, while Dylan O'Dear is back after missing all of last year because of injury.

Maple Heights MUSTANGS 28

The Cleveland Heights Tigers finished the 2018 season

at 7-3 and averaged 26.3 points per game for Head

Coach Mac Stephens.

A tough week 10 loss to Maple Heights prevented the

Tigers from vaulting into the top eight and a postseason

berth. Heights finished 10th in a very deep Division I,

Region 1.

The Mustangs defeated the Tigers 28-21, but Cleveland

Heights led Oct. 26 game 14-0 on Josh Harris' 61-yard

touchdown pass to Nolan Johnson -- Johnson sprinting

the last 40 yards -- and a Justin Wodtly 13-yard scoring

dash.

The Tigers began the season 1-2, with losses to Medina

and Toledo St. Francis DeSales before winning six

straight games.

During the six-game winning streak, the Tigers had a big

wins over the Lake Catholic Cougars in week 4 and a

week 7 victory against the Lorain Titans, 31-23.

In the Sept. 14 victory over the Cougars, the Tigers

rebounded from a lighting issue at the stadium,

stunning Lake Catholic as Josh Harris took a

quarterback sneak 80 yards to paydirt to give the home

team a 27-24 lead .

On Sept 28, the Cleveland Heights defense stood tall in

the second half as the Tigers defeated league-rival

Lorain, 31-23.

Cleveland Heights jumped out to a big lead then Lorain scored the last 23 points of the first half to lead 23-19 at the break. The Tiger defense twice had goal-line stands in the second half. Cleveland Heights forced Lorain to turn the ball over on downs six times in the game.

Overall, the Tigers finished in second place in the Lake Erie League with a 4-1 record, the only loss being week 10 vs Maple Heights.

2019 Tigers Facts Head Coach: Mac Stephens

2019 Cleveland Hts Tigers Assistant Coaches

Chalk Talk with Coach Stephens

Tigers Head Coach Mac Stephens discusses his team and the upcoming game

Cleveland Heights head coach Mac Stephens enters his fifth season on the

sidelines for the Tigers. Stephens is 21-19 in his previous four seasons

at Cedar and Lee.

Stephens spent 11 seasons as an assistant coach at three local schools

before being named the head coach of the Tigers on March 13, 2015.

Stephens graduated from Akron Firestone High School in 1986 and attended the

University of Minnesota. Stephens spent two seasons in the NFL, playing linebacker for the New York Jets in

1990 and the Minnesota Vikings in 1991.

Stephens served as the head coach for the Lutheran East Falcons in 2003. He has spent 11 seasons (2004-2014)

as an assistant coach at Euclid, Villa Angela-St, Joseph and Glenville before being named head coach for

Cleveland Heights.

Coach Stephens currently resides in Euclid with his wife Belinda. They have two sons Linden, a defensive back

for the Denver Broncos and Collin a recent graduate of Bowling Green State University. Stephens serves as the

Director of Recreation for the city of Euclid as well as the owner of Coach Mac’s Speed, Power and Fitness,

located at the Euclid Sports Plant.

"Last year's loss to Maple (Week 10) left a bad taste in the mouth of our guys because they knew we were a playoff-caliber

team. But, to their credit they've worked hard and are ready to get back at it this season."

"In my years at Heights this is my most complete team."

"There's sometimes a stereotype we are just a team full of athletes. The truth is our staff does a great job with the guys and

we are extremely well coached. We are a team that has a lot of quality skill players, but we're more than just athletic."

"We need to get off to a fast start. I think we've lost Week 1 all four years I've been coach. So we need to get off to a good

start. We want to win the LEL. Then if we can get in the playoffs, anything can happen."

This Week in the Lake Erie League (Wk 1)

Garfield Heights and Shaker Heights will join an expanding Lake Erie League over the next 12-month period.

Shaker Heights Red Raiders will exit the Greater Cleveland Conference and join the LEL beginning in August

2020. Garfield Heights rejoins the LEL after leaving the league more than a decade ago. The Bulldogs have

played most recently as an independent, and will join the new 8-team LEL halfway through the 2019-2020

school year.

Both Garfield Heights and Shaker Heights were previously LEL members, with Garfield departing in 2007 and

Shaker in 2012. Both joined the Northeast Ohio Conference, which disbanded by 2015 with eight of those

members forming the GCC.
