What follows is a request. A personal request, out of respect for one another.

Let me begin with a personal story involving my sister. Lynn is a parishioner in St. Andrews

Episcopal Church in Florence, Oregon. She is a Daughter of the King active member. She is a greeter,

and an usher. Just recently, she retired from a very fulfilling career as a teacher in the local school

district. And she is a sufferer, having fallen subject to being allergic to scents.

Yes, scents. Perfumes, air fresheners, cleaning agents, fumigants, even strong hand cleaners. It has

become so intense at times she would have to leave her classroom, or faculty meetings. She has had

to exit prayer gatherings and even church services. She develops headaches, nausea, dizziness. And

more times than not she has had to suffer in silence or alone because so many people have

discounted the ailment, or simply not cared that she is so miserable. Some in church even seem to be

defiant when asked to be considerate, and wear their preferred fragrances anyway.

I have been with her in social settings and watched her react to scents, have seen her become ill, and

I have come to realize this is no imaginary matter. I have come to understand it is a very real issue,

and I am sympathetic to her cause, and others who suffer in silence like her.

And suffer in silence is what most do. I have discovered that many who suffer from scent allergies,

for lack of a better or more scientific identification, are reticent to say anything for fear of offending

others, or fear of being discounted, or fear of being set apart. But being set apart is the eventual

outcome for those who truly suffer, because they are forced to leave when others do not respond

with sensitivity and kindness by refraining from the use of agents, such as cologne and perfume,

especially, which permeate the closed spaces of meeting rooms and church halls.

So back to my request

One of the core values we have adopted for life together at St. Luke's is respect. Inherent in the

concept of this term is the valuing of others, being considerate of them and offering special

deference or regard for each person. It is a term which requires action. A call to doing.

So my request? The fact is, I am aware we have individuals within our midst at St. Luke's who have

been suffering in silence with the very same ailment as my sister. They are highly sensitive to scents,

and as in the case of my sister, this sensitivity has become more acute with time.

I am going to ask all of you, for their sake and for the sake of the practice of true respect, and of

hospitality, that you refrain from the use of perfumes and colognes and scented skin creams when

you attend any church functions. This means at all services, as well as social gatherings, committee

meetings, or group functions of any type. This is going to seem to some as if your personal rights are

being violated.

But to follow through with this will demonstrate our commitment to one another, bearing up one

another and esteeming each other more than ourselves in true charity and love. I have confidence in

all of you that we can practice such honoring of others.

The American Association of University Women sponsor an annual Adult Spelling Bee to raise money

for women’s scholarships.

Entry fee is $100 per team of 2 - 3 contestants and includes lunch.  It will be Thursday May 28  @ NIC

The Mission of the Church Periodical Club is

to make Christ known throughout the world

by means of a variety of media materials and

the printed word. CPC is the only organiza-

to people who have no other source. Last

year in our Diocese, a grant was given to All

Saint’s Episcopal Church in Richland to buy

Hymnals and Book of Common Prayer to be

used in their prison ministries.
