Thought from the Executive Director
Dr. Dean Daniel
Hummingbird Thinking
Most birds go to great lengths to build their nests in places where they won't be disrupted or in-vaded by other birds. Most birds might, for example, Build their nest high up in a tree. Or perhaps in a hidden crevice in a cliff face. Or maybe up under the eaves of a house roof. Even so: Many of those nests get disrupted, attacked or invaded in one way or another by other birds that may steal their eggs and/or take away the grass, straw or twiglets the nest is made of; you know, for use on their own nest. Hummingbirds, by contrast, go about things a little differently. Hummingbirds (at least the black-chinned variety) purposefully build their nests in close proximity to Cooper Hawk nests. Why? Because Cooper Hawks are birds of prey -- and they feed primarily on OTHER BIRDS. Meaning OTHER BIRDS do everything possible to avoid flying in too close a proximity to the Cooper Hawks (note: hummingbirds generally fly too fast for Cooper Hawks to catch). And since OTH-ER BIRDS are the main disruptors of the hummingbird’s nest and eggs -- by positioning their nests where other birds "fear to fly" (i.e., in close proximity to Cooper Hawk nests) the hummingbirds get "third party" protection on their "housing." Clever.
(Continue on next page.)
Then there's the ruby-throated hummingbirds in Florida. Where do they build their nests? Answer: Above alligator infested waters. Why? Because the main predator of ruby-throated hummingbirds in Florida are raccoons. And rac-coons know to stay well clear of alligators! The point? This: Sometimes the smartest thing you can do with your abilities is to figure out how best to position yourself in your "environment". It often requires thinking through things stra-tegically. Call it "hummingbird thinking" if you will.
