Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill Parish Notes

November 4, 2018

IN THE NAME OF CHRIST we welcome you to Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill! Immanuel is an Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Virginia, and is part of the world-wide Anglican Communion. Immanuel was founded by the Virginia Theological Seminary. We are one parish that worships in two locations, in Zabriskie Chapel (3606 Seminary Road) and in Immanuel Chapel (3737 Seminary Road) on the seminary grounds.

A fully-staffed nursery is available in both chapels for those parents who would like to take advantage of this ministry. An usher would be happy to assist you in making your children comfortable and welcome. Please join us after the Eucharists for coffee and give us an opportunity to meet you. From mid-September through May we also offer adult education and Sunday School opportunities.

chaplains, ministry in prisons and missions on Indian reservations.

17¢ of every dollar in the diocesan budget goes to the national Church where it supports the work of the Anglican Communion around the world including the Middle East and Africa. Your pledge dollar makes possible The Episcopal Church’s “Peace Corps,” the Young Adult Service Corps, which teaches, works in agricultural development, helps refugees and migrant workers, and serves in medical settings in the US and around the world.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Forum Hour Today: “Disciples Through the Ages: A Look at the Lives of The Saints” Gain a newfound appreciation of the saints at today’s Forum Hour, led by Father Randy and Mother Rachel in the Parish Hall at 10:15a.m.

Veteran’s Day Forum Hour

Faith and Military Service

Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

We all know that military service is quite demanding, and that service members often spend significant time away from family and friends. Additionally, service members are often placed in psychologically- challenging and very dangerous situations. Long deployments, family separation, harsh combat conditions and serving in tough positions often take their toll. What sources of strength do service members rely on during a long de-ployment? Amid the chaos of a battle or special operations, where can a service member turn for inspiration or guidance? One may ask, what role does faith play in military service? Please join us as Keith June leads next Sunday’s forum hour, Sunday, November 11th at 10:15a.m. in the Parish Hall, and hear several Immanuel par ishioners — who happen to be service veterans — discuss their faith journey during their military career.

Weekly Bible Study Begins THIS THURSDAY November 8th, The Fairchild Room The Thursday morning Bible Study Group from Church of the Resurrection cordially invites all parishioners and neighbors of Immanuel to join them for weekly Bible Study each Thursday, beginning at 8a.m.

Faith Sharing Now

Join Kendrah McDonald, Seminarian, Virginia Theological Seminary on Sunday, November 18th at 10:15a.m. in the Parish Hall for a forum hour to discuss practical ways to share your faith.

Today is Commitment Sunday! There is still time to pledge — if you haven’t done so. Simply pick-up a brochure from an Usher, or — if you are viewing this announcement online and not in paper form — click the button below (found on www.icoh.net under “Hot Links”) to make a pledge online.

Please join Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill on Saturday November 10, 2018 for a very special evening of grace and gratitude for God's blessings. Beginning at 6:00 pm. in Immanuel Chapel at the Virginia Theological Seminary, the Immanuel Choir, under the direction of Dr. Jane Tavernier, will sing Choral Evensong. Immediately following Evensong, Immanuel's annual Harvest Dinner will begin with drinks and hors d'oeuvres in Scott Lounge at 7:00pm., followed by a buffet dinner in the Refectory at 7:30p.m. Once again, this is a family friendly event - kid-friendly fare and children's activities are being planned in Scott Lounge. Prices for the Harvest Dinner are $30.00 per adult and $10.00 per child between 12 and 5 years of age (children under 5 -- no charge). The family maximum is $70.00. Make your reservations by November 5th by either mailing or dropping-off the form on this page to Aleta in the Parish Office with your payment; or making your reservation and payment online via Immanuel’s website with this link: https://www.immanuel-on-the-hill.org/2018-evensong-and-harvest-dinner.html . A third option is to RSVP by phone, pressing number 9 when prompted by voicemail “...to RSVP for an event”, then mailing/dropping-off your payment — again, no later than Monday, November 5th. RSVPs must be received by this date, as we must provide VTS with a firm number of attendees by November 6th. Also – please note – RSVPs are capped at 200 as this is the maximum number of occupants allowed in The Refectory per the orders of the US Fire Marshall.

MISSION STATEMENT: Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill is a Christian community in the Episcopal tradition, striving to be in relationship with God and each other as Christ has taught us, actively attempting to sense and to serve God’s plan with great love. We are

guided by Mark 16:15: “Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel,” to learn, discern, and proclaim the Good News by being active ministers in the various communities where we live and serve.
