Thorsby Junior Senior High
Principal’s Message — Ganton Gazette
We are going to take a quick break from the review of Michelle Borba’s book on empa-thetic students to focus on a topic that has been creeping up more and more with our students this year. The idea between ‘fair’, ‘equal’ and equitable’. When looking at the OurSchool survey results a couple of answers stand out to me: “we need teachers to treat everyone equally”; “the school needs to be more equal in handling discipline is-sues”’; “everyone needs to be treated equally”; etc. When I read these results I think of two things that my parents always told me while I was growing up: 1. Life’s not fair; 2. Sometimes fair isn’t equal and equal isn’t always fair. Instead of always being fair or equal, THS and the teachers here strive to be equita-ble. Believing that everyone needs to be treated equally in education or life, I believe, is a fallacy. With equal treatment education there would be no: Instructional Support Plans; extra time on exams/assignments; availability of readers/scribes; or the ability to use context in discipline issues, just to name a few. In life I also believe that people shouldn’t necessarily be treated equally as well. I should pay more taxes on my income then a working single mother. I should be willing to help support charities when I have the chance. I should volunteer to coach my son in soccer. I should treat every student differently based on their own needs and background. Why should I do these things? Well for starters, because I can and that is being equi-table, not equal. I’m happy to know that my tax dollars are going to provide services like Cancer treatments to someone that is less fortunate or to support some-one on Employment Insurance. It’s not fair that the global price of oil went down and now we have more families that are relying on the foodbank more heavily than ever. It’s not fair that, had I not volunteered to coach Jack, 11 kids from my community would have been sent to neighbouring communities to play U8 soccer.

Finally, not all students have an equal upbringing, we have students that have lost important family members, have been brought up in violent situations, have learning difficulties, and many that have been brought up without these challenges. It’s not fair that some live in pov-erty, while others are being fed with the silver spoon. What ties all these students and situ-ations together though is that for roughly 6 hours a day, 182 days of the year they are our children and they deserve to be treated with care and respect. Does this mean that sometimes we hold certain people to higher standards? Yes it does. But, does that mean that we expect less of anyone? No it does not. The end goal is for every sin-gle student to be successful in their own way. Sometimes this means being on the honour roll, while to others it means giving a student a safe and caring place and for some it means both or anything inbetween. My goal is, has, and always will be to treat each of our students equitably, not equally. Until next month, here is a picture of Jack and Ruby at the Muttart Conservatory.

We know our students have lives outside of school and we would love to hear about it! Let us know about the accomplishments your child has. Did he get first in public speaking at 4H? Will he be entering an archery contest? How is she doing in sports? Did she win big at a cheerleading competition? How about those up and coming rodeo stars? Cadets; when is your annual inspection? Tell us the details!! Email any details and pictures to:
We will include them in the daily slide show and in that month’s newsletter.

What is a Learning Commons?
Learning Commons are learning spaces, similar to libraries and class-rooms, that share space for information technology, remote or online education, collaboration, content creation, meetings, and reading or study spaces; which are designed to be arranged by users according to their individual needs. They may also have tools, equipment, or mak-erspaces available.
Thorsby Junior Senior High School will be adapting our current Library space to be more flexible and adaptive to our students’ needs! We are excited about this shift and all of the new learning opportunities that it will give our students.
These are areas that we aim to improve upon with our new LLC
