Client : reTHINKINGLocation : Paris - Eiffel TowerProject : Whats up Paris?

Design Competition 2016

The technology is gradually taking ground in the cities, the lights change, flashes flicker, the cameras capture moving moments and increase the murmur of the streets. Make a photograph, something that was previously accessible to just a few, today is an everyday activity. Knowing what your friends are doing, family or co-workers at all times is something natural, we pay almost no attention to land-scape, people or a face to face conversation.

The Eiffel Tower site invites you to rethink what is necessary to create an atmosphere where technology should not have any role, where the talks “face to face” are the pre-dominant element, where people make in-teraction and to feel relax, “cooling down” between all the intense, full of tourists, work-ers, cars. It's a place in-constant motion with changes of atmosphere.

Our idea to create a “cooling down” atmo-sphere is so we called Blind fog, its a space that make you “disapear” from all the intense of the city, where technology have no role, where the people really able to talks “face to face”, where the people are having a meditation feeling between all the hustle in Paris.

Client : Krones AGLocation : Angola Project : Glass Factory (Concept, Schematic, Detail, Construction)

The Project covers the master planning de-tail, tender and construction design of the Greenfield Brewery, Can Factory, Glass Fac-tory and Batching Plan Building in Angola.

The project was built on a 110,000 m2 green-field site in Angola and consists of the Pro-duction, Packaging, Warehouse and Offices Area.

Royal Haskoning DHV Netherlands and Roy-al Haskoning DHV Indonesia provided the design (conceptual, schematic, detail, ten-der, construction) for Architectural, Civil and Structural and also Mechanical, Electrical, HVAC.

Page 4: Thomas Suwandi cv + portfolio

The challenge of this project is to ensure that the quality of design (detail) can accommo-date the needs of all the processing phases (raw material - finished good) and that the building design (architecture) is also adapted to the climate situation in Angola.

The processing building (glass production) is basically divided in 3 areas: Raw Materi-al Storage, Batching Plan, Glass Production Building.

They are all connected by road and under-ground tunnels for a continuous production line.

Client : SMART (Sinarmas Agro Resources and Technology)Location : Jakarta - IndonesiaProject : Biodiesel Plant (Concept, Schematic, Detail, Construction)

PT. Sinar Mas Agro Resources & Technolo-gy Tbk (PT. SMART Tbk) decided to build a new biodiesel plant with crude palm oil as its raw material, on their existing palm oil refin-ery. The plant will produce 1,000 metric tons per day. The crude palm oil is first processed into REDPO (refined, bleached and deodor-ize palm oil) with a pre-treatment unit and then turned into biodiesel by the biodiesel unit equipment as supplied by a third party specialist.

In addition, the plant will include a glycerine refinery to further refine the crude glycerine that is produced as a result of the biodiesel conversion.

RHDHV delivers the expertise for Architec-ture - Civil - Structure, MEP utilities, Process, design works and overall project - and con-struction management works, tank OSBL processing design works.

Client : Bluescope BuildingLocation : Bekasi - IndonesiaProject : PEB line Production (Concept, Schematic)

Bluescope Buildings planned to acquire a piece of land for their project. For their new Beam Line Fabrication Facility, it was esti-mated that the land should be approximately 50,000 m2. Bluescope Buildings wished to obtain the LEED Gold certification for this project. Scope of Services: Architecture - Civil - Structure, MEP.

RHDHV handled the conceptual and sche-matic design phases to help Bluescope Build-ing in estimating the amount of square me-ters needed for their new building.

We also provided our client with Due Diligent report to achieve the LEED Gold Certification, which was a design challenge for us.

Client : Bitzer Compressor IndonesiaLocation : West Java - IndonesiaProject : Production line and Head Office (Concept, Schematic)

PT. Bitzer Compressor Indonesia is a leading global company from Germany. They decided to have a new building for their compressor assembling line, a warehouse and also an of-fice in Indonesia.

We provided our services during the concep-tual design till the schematic design only, be-cause the client needed to be able to know their optimum space requirement (in terms of efficiency) and also a budget estimation.

Several design options were offered to the client with different styles and budgets.

Client : Jotun Paint IndonesiaLocation : Bekasi - IndonesiaProject : Warehouse and Head Office (Concept, Schematic, Detail, Construction)

Jotun Paint owns about 33 production facil-ities in many countries, including Indonesia. Due to the rapid economic growth in this country, they needed a new office and cen-tral warehouse for their products.

During the design stage, balancing the archi-tectural and economical factors when choos-ing materials and the building finishing was a challenging task, because the ambition of client is for the building to be LEED certified.

Scope of Services: ACS, MEP, Process De-sign, Tender Support, Construction Manage-ment and Supervision, Safety Management.

Client : Mr. Dicky and FamilyLocation : Jakarta - IndonesiaProject : House (Concept, Schematic)

Mr. Dicky and his family live in the suburb of Jakarta, Indonesia. He wanted to renovate his house with a new design of modern min-imalist tropical house.

Jakarta is a very humid city with approxi-mately 35°C during dry season and 30°C during wet season.

A typical tropical house should have big openings for the windows and doors to allow the wind to blow in and out of the house.

In this design, the big roof is elevated from the house in order for the heat from solar radiation on the roof to exit with the wind.

Big openings in windows on the exterior are also being covered by canopy to avoid direct sun light and to prevent rain water from pro-ducing heat and flood in the house.

The new Indonesian Embassy is not only a delegation building but also a “message”, that can stimulate bilateral cooperation be-tween Indonesia and Germany and also other countries.

Client : Indonesian EmbassyLocation : Berlin - TiergartenProject : The new Indonesian Embassy in Berlin Master thesis 2011

The Indonesian embassy building should in-vite the visitor and user to experience the dy-namism of German modernity combined to the aesthetics of the Indonesian identity.

Page 12: Thomas Suwandi cv + portfolio

The concept behind the design of the new Indonesian Embassy is to embody the shape of a rice field, an emblematic sight of Indo-nesia.

Rice fields in Indonesia are built on multilevel grounds (usually of volcanic origin), a setup that impacts the water circulation, the farm-ers’ movements, and their visual relationship (vertically and horizontally).

Client : Winkens ArchitektenLocation : Long IslandProject : Long Island Connections Design Competitions 2011

Suburbia in Long Island faces problems of homogenity and fragmentation. In this com-petition, we sought to highlight special quali-ties and opportunities in each town and con-nect them to the greater metropolitan area, by bringing the right elements together. We wished to revitalize Long Island communities.

These 5 proposals suggested connecting ex-isting local strengths to synthesize potential local identities. They focused on connecting residents of Long Island with each other, bet-ter their qualities of life and their relevance in the outside world.

Connecting Working and Living in Mineola

Mineola is one of the densest urban centers in Long Island, however due to automobile congestion and excessive parking areas, the “downtown” has lost its identity. By concen-trating workplaces and apartments in the center, we sought to increase chances that people would walk or ride the train to work. When living and working are connected, a healthy town center can develop.

Through improvements of the transportation system, with pedestrian paths and North - South shuttle buses, we aimed to reduce au-tomobile congestion in the center of Mineola.

The design of plazas around the train station made it clear that Mineola is more than just a place to park your car.

Page 14: Thomas Suwandi cv + portfolio

Connecting Education and the City in Westbury

Three of Long Island’s major universities are hidden in the woods of Old Westbury and Old Brookville. While the beautiful setting has certain advantages, it also isolates the edu-cational intentions from the rest of the Long Island and New York City.

We wished to build a meeting point in down-town Westbury at the train station, where the schools can interact more directly with the public.

Connecting with the railroad would put the Long Island schools at a more even footing with the metropolitan universities. Student works exhibited in an accessible part of West-bury would gain a greater significance.

Connecting Living and Nature in Wyandanch

The classic dream of suburbia is to live near the countryside’s nature and work in a big city. Unfortunately, open country land and affordable housing are running out, and to keep this dream alive, an updated suburb concept is needed, with a more efficient structure than single family housing. To this aim, we proposed affordable apartment clus-ters surrounded by nature, with concentrated community centers and a strong connection to the railroad.

Client : Licensing Department OfficeLocation : Yogyakarta / IndonesiaProject : Renovation Goverment Building

Conceptual, Schematic, Detail, Construction

In 2006, a large Mag. 6.3 earthquake located 20 km from Yogyajakarta under the sea floor hit the capital of Central Java and the sur-rounding areas. At least 5,749 people were killed, 38,568 were injured and as many as 600,000 people were displaced in the Ban-tul-Yogyakarta area. More than 127,000 houses were destroyed and an additional 451,000 were damaged in the area, with a total loss estimated at approximately 3.1 bil-lion U.S. dollars.

The earthquake’s shallow depth was a major factor, but the scale of the damage was made worse by failure to meet safe building stan-dards and employ basic earthquake-resistant construction methods.

Page 16: Thomas Suwandi cv + portfolio

Most homes in the area were built with low-quality materials without structural and constructural standards. Many deaths and in-juries occurred due to the collapse of build-ings and walls.

In order to reduce similar structural damage in the future, our company was tasked by the government with the redesigning of its buildings with identical designs as before the collapse but with up to date structural and constructural standards. Additionally, we su-pervised the construction process to ensure that the new standards were enforced.

Client : Sultanate of YogyakartaLocation : Yogyakarta / IndonesiaProject : Restoration and Rehabilitation Taman Sari Water Castle Internship Project 2004

Built in mid 18th century, the Taman Sari Water Castle, a villa of the Central Java Sul-tan, had multiple functions, such as a resting area, a workshop, a meditation area.

The gardens and the buildings suffered some damage during the Java War of 1825-1830 and the palace complex fell out of use follow-ing an earthquake in 1867, which destroyed several buildings and drained the water fea-tures.

Page 18: Thomas Suwandi cv + portfolio

My task as a trainee was to supervise the ren-ovation phase of the Taman Sari Water Castle and to research the history of the construc-tion of this complex, in order to rebuild it with materials and processes as close as possible to the original ones.

Project : 3D Modelling Location : Jakarta / Indonesia Master thesis 2011

The intention was to design a memorial building based on the tragedy that happened in May 1998 in Jakarta, when our former dic-tator president Soeharto was forced to step down from his position as a president for 32 years, after students and citizens riots, during which there were many casualties, that haven’t been acknowledged till now by the government.

My task was to accommodate the architect’s conceptual design to 3D schematic design, using ArchiCad 11 and through the construc-tion of a maquette.
