Message From the Potentate

Nobles and Ladies, The Zembo Shrine Children’s Christmas Party has been in existence now for 21 years. It was first started in 1994 when Illustrious Sir Bill Boor was Potentate. I was a member of the Arab Patrol at the time and our unit wanted to participate. I’m not a creative kind of guy when it comes to crafts, and espe-cially crafts that can be assembled by children under 10 years of age, so I recruited my mother. That first year we created kitchen refrigerator magnets that resembled reindeer out of Milk Bone dog biscuits. We attended each year since then with different Christmas ornaments over the course of time. You can see samples of all of these ornaments on the Poten-

tate’s Christmas Tree located in the lobby. The party lasts for just two hours and it has always been the quickest two hours of my life as I get engrossed with assisting children in the assembly of Christmas ornaments (I’ve picked up a new role a few years ago at the party, but let’s just say that I’m still involved). It’s always fun to watch the differences between the children. Some require little help and yet others are intimidated and need to be coached from beginning to the end. There are those who are insistent upon doing it their own way even when it is totally wrong. Then there are the right brain children that are so me-ticulous in achieving perfection with no sacrifice of time but others just want to hurry through in order to head off to the next table of crafts. It is differences such as these that make it Serious Fun. Eventually, as with the fate of many clubs and units, the Arab Patrol disbanded. Nonetheless my mother and I kept the tradition alive by setting up a table of our own each year. To be completely honest there was a point where I wasn’t really active in Zembo Shrine as a result of the Patrol’s demise and I considered demitting alto-gether. My mother always looked forward to the Children’s Christmas Party and that is what kept me paying my dues. This highlights a very important point regarding membership retention. Find something you are interested in being part of… whether it’s a club, a unit or an annual event and you will continue your membership for years to come and perhaps you might even be Potentate someday. With Christmas parties comes a bittersweet moment in the tenure of a Potentate. Christmas parties quickly bring to an end not only your year as Potentate but also your time serving on the Divan. When I look back over the past 5 years I recognize the friends that we have met along the way, especially those I did not know when we started out, not only within the Zembo Oasis but literally throughout the world. For this we are truly blessed and I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for being a friend and supporting Zembo Shrine in 2015. May you forever have “Serious Fun” in whatever you do.
