Thomas MacDonagh School

The Thomas MacDonagh School is a celebration of the heritage and culture of Cloughjordan and the surrounding country side ‘...in calm of middle country...’ (T. MacDonagh). Topics will be of special interest to people of Tipperary, students of history and all those with an interest in the approaching centenary celebrations of the Easter Rising.

The School begins at 11am, with lunch break at 2pm, and concludes at 5.45pm. Those travelling by train from Dublin will be met at the station and returned in time for evening train.

Advance booking is required by Wednesday 24th April.

Morning sessionChaired by Dr Mary McCarthy, History Dept., University of Limerick

Lucille Redmond - award-winning writer and journalist, grand-daughter of Thomas MacDonagh and regular supporter of Cloughjordan Heritage Group. Lucille will speak about Thomas and Muriel and their children. Her talk will be based on her recent research on the MacDonagh Letters, held in the National Library.

Honor O’Brolchain - author of a biography of Joseph Mary Plunkett (in the series 16 Lives) and editor of Geraldine Plunkett Dillon’s memoir, All in the Blood. Honor will speak about her grand-uncle, the poet and the patriot Joseph Mary Plunkett.

David Lawlor - guide to historic monuments with the OPW and based in Cashel and a native of Kilruane in Cloughjordan Parish. David was awarded an MA in History for his thesis on ‘The Irish Revolution of 1916-1921 and Modern Memory’. He will talk on the commemorative heritages of County Tipperary, looking towards 2016.

Afternoon SessionTour of the Thomas MacDonagh Heritage Centre and Library.

A field trip will follow, visiting local sites of heritage interest. A guide will give a talk at each of the sites.
