Thomas H. Lutsey was a successful businessmanwho never forgot his dairy farm roots. Without thebenefits of a college education, he was neverthelessa great man with driving intellect and curiositywho pushed his dairy business boundaries everoutward. Always looking to the future, he wasdetermined to pay "forward" to the cominggenerations of young prospects with those sameroots. Believing hard work was essential tosuccess, he founded the Thomas H. LutseyScholarship with that in mind.
He learned a lot growing up on the family farmnear Pulaski. In 1933, he began processing anddelivering milk to the Green Bay area. A few yearslater, he moved his milk operation, called JerseyDairy, to Green Bay. Always looking for newarenas of opportunity, he developed a fascinationwith ice cream and began making his own. Soon,he was selling it to customers on the same deliveryroute with the milk.
His curiosity did not end there. He had an ideato slice quarts of ice cream into tenths, insertsticks, dip the squares into chocolate, and roll innuts. They became popular at fairs around GreenBay and were sold as "paddle pops." By 1946, Mr.Lutsey established Gold Bond Ice Cream andmoved the business from bottling milk to producingonly ice cream novelties.
As paddle pops became popular, he beganthinking how to make them faster. Seeing otheroperations, Mr. Lutsey soon built a brine tank
production line of ice cream bars and water icepieces. The business shifted away from packagedice cream and became dedicated toward novelties. As time went by, this process was continuallyrefined and upgraded to allow increased productioncapacity to leap forward.
By 1953, he expanded Gold Bond's operation tosouthern Wisconsin by purchasing the Clarson IceCream Company in Richland Center. In 1969,Gold Bond built a new facility on Green Bay's westside, and by 1973, Gold Bond built its thirdmanufacturing plant in Ocala, Florida. Thebusiness continued to grow. In 1980, Sikeston,Missouri became the site for Gold Bond's fourthplant followed by a fifth in Hagerstown, Maryland.Westward expansion allowed construction of asixth plant in Henderson, Nevada.
Gold Bond Ice Cream now had the attention ofthe worldwide ice cream industry. In 1989,Unilever purchased Gold Bond and relocated itsNorth American headquarters to Green Bay. Withthe Good Humor and Popsicle brands in Unilever'sportfolio, this acquisition allowed them tomanufacture their branded treats "in-house." Inearly 1993, Unilever added Klondike to its brands, and by late 1994, Breyers All Natural Ice Creambecame their fourth brand, allowing entry into thepackaged ice cream business. The businessbecame known as Good Humor-Breyers Ice Cream, one of the largest ice cream companies in theworld. It was headquartered in Green Bay until2008, when Unilever consolidated the ice creamoperation to its New Jersey corporate location.
Thomas H. Lutsey never allowed his success inlife to take him away from his dairy farm roots. He was determined to do something tangible tosafeguard that lifestyle. In 1986, he founded theThomas H. Lutsey Scholarship to ensure newgenerations educational opportunities whichcould keep them competitive in a global market.
Each year the Scholarship Committee reviewsapplications using guidelines to select recipients.Candidates are measured on scholastic excellence, family financial need, good citizenshipparticipation and agricultural roots. Preference isgiven to candidates from rural backgrounds andto those intending to take their degree back to thefarming industry. Specific fields of study includedairy science, animal science, agricultural engi-neering and veterinary medicine. Studiesindirectly related to agricultural managementsuch as agricultural economics, biotechnology, computer science, environmental science, business administration and education are alsoacknowledged.
Since 1986, more than 70 students havebenefited from the program with more that$350,000 being contributed towards theireducation. Lutsey Scholars, for their part, areexpected to maintain their grades and continue tofocus their major studies toward agriculture.
