iNEW CHALLENGES AHE D FOR FIRST FEM LE

IN NG s t C M SQUADRON ENGIN SHOP

An unlikely place for a woman you might s y? Not for AB Mamo McCallumwho became the first female to work as a jet mechanic in the 154th CAMSquadron Engine Shop. According to Mamo she feels right at home there. She had past experience with engines, in making minor repairs on her car.She was introduced to the ANG by Sgt Alfredo Canopin and he recommendedshe go into jet mechanics, "because at that time I was undecided as to whatfield I wanted to go into", she said. She went through Basic MilitaryTraining at Lackland AFB, Texas and departed there on 27 OCT 76 with greatanticipation towards her next assignment, Jet Mech School at Chanute AFB,Ill. She said, "that after adapting to th s new situation (bootcamp Ha Ha:)she realized how important teamwork was". On 31 JAN 77 she graduated fromschooland was ready to come back to sunny Hawaii.

to experience greaterchallenges working as a jet mechanic.Mamo graduated from Maryknoll High School and is employed full time atthe Cinerama Reef Hotel. Her extra-curricular activities include body surfingand volleyball to name a few. "I am currently learning from my experiencesin the ANG and have not regretted coming in", she said. Asked if she wouldrecommend the Guard to her friends she said, "YES". We want to say welcomeand mahalo to Mamo.
