At the end of last month, members and helpers of the Tairua Volunteer Fire Brigade took to the streets for the annual door-to-door appeal. Right in the middle of it, the Brigade fire fighters got a call-out and off they went to attend the emergency. What a double up - volunteering on the collection, then volunteering to bring help and comfort to those in need. It really does go without saying that all the teams that serve us here in Pauanui and Tairua, not just the "firies", go above and beyond the call of duty, and we have a lot to be thankful for. Each member of our emergency services teams has undergone hours of intensive training and study to be well-prepared to carry out their roles. At a moment’s
Hatsofftoourvolunteers
notice they are prepared to drop everything and head off to meet the challenge. Compassion is their banner, and sacrifice is their choice. Yet all of them approach their roles with a humble attitude. In conversations with a number of vollies, the same comments come out, "Why wouldn't I volunteer?", "Isn't that just what you do in a small community?", "We're not special, we just like making sure people are safe and looked after." I'm sure that you, like us, hold all our volunteers in very high regard, and also like us, you are keen to support them in any way. Offer them a "thank you" and a hats off the next time you see them, and if you missed any of the collections, consider dropping a donation off.

HANDYMANYour summer help!
This Saturday 25 Janu-ary, get along to Cory Park Domain, from 9am-1pm for the Tairua Heritage Society Fete. The theme is “the 50s and 60s”, and you are en-couraged to dress up for this great family community day. There will be stalls, enter-tainment, and competitions. This is one of the Society's major fundraising events and the advice is to take plenty of cash with you as EFTPOS will not be gener-ally available. See page 3 of this issue for the time-table of events. If you are entering the photography competition, your entries will need to be lodged before the day to make sure they can be displayed for view-ing. Get them to the Info Centre by this Friday 4pm.Last week, the volunteers at St Francis Op Shop de-cided that they wanted to donate to the Australian bushfires appeal and ar-ranged for the takings to be set aside for that purpose. On Sunday, the church ser-vice attenders also contrib-uted from the offerings col-lection.Thanks to everyone who supported their effort by shopping at the Op Shop or making an offering. If you would also like to contrib-ute to this cause, please talk to the Op Shop staff.Remember to check the status of TCDC’s water re-strictions regularly. You can access it on their website: www.tcdc.govt.nz, or by ob-serving one the signs placed around our towns. With the peak summer population bubble now burst, the pres-sure on our water supply is easing and, at the time of printing, home gardeners are now able to use the gar-den hose to water on alter-nate days, based on street numbers with evens match-ing with even days and odds matching with odd days.
