TIMING! Plan plenty of time to visit Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. A World Heritage site, HVNP has much to see and do. It’s best to spend the night at Volcano House or nearby Volcano Village to best enjoy your road trip to and from the park; it’s located on the southeastern end of the island, Map G:K12.

SEE RED! Stay after dark to see red. At press time, a red glow emanates from the ongoing gas eruption of Halema‘uma‘u Crater. Peer right into the action at the Jagger Museum Overlook. The billowing plume is the result of molten activity in the crater’s lava lake. The park is open 24-7 so check it out after dinner or before dawn, when it’s less crowded—you may hear lava bubbling below! Map F:B20.

INFO! Eruption activity can change so stop at Kilauea Visitor Center; it’s staffed by rangers 8:45 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, 808-985-6000. Find a daily posting of free interpretive programs and catch a short film, “Born of Fire…Born of the Sea,” followed by a current eruption update, at the top of the hour. For an online eruption update, visit nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit/lava2.htm.

SCIENCE! Watch real-time scientific monitors in action inside Jagger Museum. Colorful, large murals by the late art historian Herb Kawainui Kane depict the Hawaiian pantheon, including Pelehonuamea, the deity of volcanoes. Open 8:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. daily with “Life on the Edge” ranger talks at 2, 2:30 and 5 p.m.

HIKE! Go subterranean with a walk through Thurston Lava Tube. A picturesque trail rich with bird song and towering tree ferns descends to the 500-year-old Nahuku tunnel that’s illuminated by lights. Caves like this form by traveling magma.

MORE! Other park attractions illustrating the awe of volcanism: Kilauea Iki Crater, Devastation Trail, Keanakakoi Crater, Pu‘u Loa Petroglyphs and Chain of Craters Road. www.nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit.

THIS WEEK BIG ISLAND

It may be hard to concentrate on your game in Hawai’i. After all, the lava-lined fairways provide a striking contrast to the manicured greens dappled by the canopies of palm trees. And then there’s the ocean beckoning for your attention. But you can do it—just remind yourself that many Big Isle courses were crafted by the biggest names in course design. Waikoloa Village Golf Club offers a Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed, championship course with large, well-bunkered and undulating greens. Wide landing areas encourage aggressive tee shots. Rated the “Big Island’s Best Bargain” by Golf Magazine, the course is frequented by local residents. Conveniently located above the Kohala Coast, the course is the second oldest on the Big Isle and treats golfers to mountain and coastal views. Hawaii Tee Times offers golf booking services at over 40 courses throughout the state. Play on the same courses as the pros, choosing your preferred course terrain. Hawaii Tee Times helps visiting golfers find either challenging or leisurely play.

Migrating humpback whales start arriving in Hawaiian waters during the fall, with most of them here by January. Enroute from Alaska, the gentle giants breed and calve off the Hawaiian Islands and then return in April to their summer feeding grounds in krill-rich polar waters. Scientists think humpbacks don’t feed in Hawai‘i. Instead, they survive off a thick coat of blubber built up over the summer. Being mammals, the young nurse their mother’s fat-rich milk, gaining up to 200 pounds a day the first weeks of life. Whales seem to prefer the leeward side of islands and especially like the protective channels between islands. According to the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, humpbacks were plentiful in oceans worldwide before being severely depleted by commercial whaling at the start of the 20th century. Through a subsequent international ban and protections under the Marine Mammal Protection and Endangered Species Acts, North Pacific Humpbacks whales number more than 21,000 today, with about half of them using Hawai‘i as their principle wintering round. A whale watch cruise is a great way to spot the state’s marine mammal, although you may spy one while on a f lightseeing tour, driving coastal roads or dining at oceanside restaurants. On the Big Island, Pu‘ukohala Heiau (Map C:E5) is a great perch above the ocean to spy whales. Don’t miss out on the chance to see them!

State, federal and international laws protect the sustainable harvest of black coral in designated waters. Black coral grows in deep-sea colonies, taking 50 years or more to mature. The coral is related to sea anemones and grows in a tree-like shape. While the living tissue of the coral is brilliantly

colored, the gem takes its name from the coral’s black skeleton. Hawaiians call it ‘ekaha ku moana. The birthstone for June, pearls come in a variety of hues and shapes. Tahitian or black pearls are organic gems formed by the black lip oyster; they are French Polynesia’s largest export. South Sea pearls are produced using the large, 12-inch Pinctada maxima mollusk and is commercially harvested in Indonesia, Australia and the Philippines. Akoya pearls come from the akoya

oyster, which is found and farmed primarily in Japan and Asia. Freshwater pearls are created using freshwater mussels and farmed in the U.S. and Asia. Pearl Factory makes shopping more fun with excitement and memories! Pearl Factory is Hawai‘i’s original pearl-in-the-oyster. First, choose your oyster and then the pearl is plucked from the shell. Next, pick a stunning sterling jewelry setting to enhance the pearl—there are over 120 selections. Watch as your pearl is mounted on the spot into a beautiful pendant or ring made using sterling silver or white, yellow or rose gold. Hawaiian Heirloom Jewelry is patterned after bracelets given in 1887 to Hawai‘i’s royalty by Queen Victoria. Available in a variety of golds and silver, the jewelry is stylized by engraved scrolls accented with the wearer’s name in black-enameled, Old English lettering. Island residents also wear bracelets bearing their child’s name and bequeath the jewelry to the child later in life. Lehua Jewelers specializes in Hawaiian Heirloom jewelry, creating original scrolls for bracelets, rings, earrings and pendants for over 20 years. One-of-a kind, hand-engraved designs are named after the island f lora and fauna they are inspired by: Plumeria Flora, Kona Coffee, Waves, Inana Honu (Turtle). The namesake Lehua Blossom and Ohia Lehua designs pay tribute to the first tree to grow from lava and the Big Isle’s official f lower.

Made Fresh DailyAny day that begins with a hot cup of coffee and a freshly baked pastry is a good one. Pick up fresh-baked breads, croissants, pastries and pies, or deli sandwiches, quiche and sweet desserts for a picnic on a white-sand beach, along the hiking trail or to enjoy while on the road. Saving something sweet for a late-night bite doesn’t hurt either.

Enjoy an island dining experience that engages all the senses: visual appeal, tantalizing aromas, and of course, scrumptious flavors.

Hawai‘i’s Best on a PlateHawai‘i Regional Cuisine (HRC) was born 22 years ago in 1991 when a group of 12 island chefs experimented with food concepts and developed what is now recognized worldwide as HRC. Eastern and western culinary traditions were combined to create unique Pacific-inspired dishes that incorporated locally grown and raised products from island farmers, plus the freshest seafood from the Pacific Ocean. The 12 original pioneers of Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine are chefs Sam Choy, Roger Dikon, Mark Ellman, Beverly Gannon, Jean-Marie Josselin, George Mavrothalassitis, Peter Merriman, Amy Ferguson Ota, Philippe Padovani, Gary Strehl, Alan Wong, and Roy Yamaguchi. Restaurants offering HRC include Huggo’s in Kailua-Kona, Bamboo Restaurant, plus Roy’s Waikoloa Bar & Grill and Merriman’s in Waimea.

Asian FlavorsYou’ll find that the f lavors of the Far East are well represented in the islands with Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai and Vietnamese dishes at many restaurants, drive ins and take-out places all across the state. If the rich f lavors and complex spices of Thai dishes hit the spot, check out Phuket Monkey Thai Cuisine in Kailua-Kona.

with a local twist

Hawai‘i offers all your favorite foods (and then some), but with an island-style twist. Here’s to expanding our tastebuds while enjoying the things that make it “local”! For casual, yet elegant, dinner and cocktails on the water’s edge in Kailua Village, Huggo’s has been THE place to go since 1969. The award-winning restaurant is known for innovative fresh fish offerings, teriyaki steak, guava-braised baby back ribs, house-made pastas and salads. Enjoy live music on weekends and an expanded menu. A must: try a handcrafted cocktail concocted with house-made ingredients! Family owned and locally loved, Splasher’s Grill offers a spectacular, open-air view of Kailua Bay, plus delicious food and fun. Enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus a 3-6 p.m. happy hour with live music, seven appetizer plates under $7, and drink specials.

Food faves include the fresh ocean catches, salads, burgers, “splashwiches” and Hawaiian sweetbread french toast. Enjoy dinner for breakfast or breakfast for dinner at Ken’s House of Pancakes—it’s totally up to you. You can’t go wrong with the Sweet Bread French Toast made with Portuguese sweet bread, BBQ Kalua Pig Sandwich, or how about the Lup Cheong Omelette? It’s a spicy, sweet Chinese sausage prepared in an omelette. Lots more on the menu! Bamboo Restaurant serves up Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine such as its tender, smoked pork from the imu in its Kalua Pork Quesadilla. Or savor the Kohala Cordon & Kalua entree: oven-baked macadamia nut crusted organic chicken breasts wrapped around smokey kalua pork and Swiss cheese that’s topped with a lilikoi mustard glaze. Yummy in your tummy!

82 Taste the Tropics in a Cocktail

Think pineapples, coconuts, orchids and plenty of spirits! Known as balmy weather thirst quenchers, tropical drinks are a must in Hawai‘i. They all contain fruity juices and exotic-looking garnishes—plus refreshing ice in large quantities. Imbibe a venerable Mai Tai, Blue Hawaii or Pina Colada for starters!

Mai TaiIt’s bright like a tropical moon. Bartenders argue on how best to make it—and who invented it. Suppposedly Don the Beachcomber used two rums, lime and grapefruit juice, bitters and Cointreau in his concoction, while Trader Vic’s was totally different. However it’s tweaked, the sweet f lavor is fruity, juicy and packs a punch!

Blue HawaiiNamed after the 1961 Hollywood blockbuster starring Elvis Presley, a Blue Hawaii sports an ocean blue thanks to the ingredient Blue Curacao. A combination of vodka, pineapple juice and sweet/sour syrup makes it a pucker-upper and transports you to where the film was made—Kaua‘i.

Pina ColadaCold and creamy, this drink goes down easy. A combo of light rum, pineapple juice, and cream of coconut, it can double as dessert. No wonder it’s the national drink of Puerto Rico!

Did you know that in ancient Hawai‘i, men and women were forbidden to eat together? However, in 1819, King Kamehameha II put an end to the kapu (law or rule), which then allowed everyone to gather and enjoy their meals. Thus the lu‘au was born. At a lu‘au, no one is a stranger, and all are welcomed with the spirit of aloha. It’s a time to enjoy Hawaiian cultural activities and performances, a grand feast and creating new friendships. Presented by Traditions Hawaii and the renown musical Lim family, Mauna Kea Beach Luau headlines a spectacular fire knife dance and includes performances by the award-winning hula halau, Na Lei ‘O Kaholoku. The incredible buffet offers 30 scrumptious food choices that include the highlight—savory kalua pig, smoked in the underground imu (oven).

Here’s how it works:as you know, trading CO2 (exhale) for O2 (inhale) occurs in billions of alveoli cells in the bronchial tubes & lungs, but not in the 4-6 inches from the trachea to the mouth hole—the stretch known as dead air space. A primitive snorkel triples dead air space, so you re-breathe the same air, which is like wearing the same sox or not changing your skivvies. Burning lungs with a heavy heart & head afflict the snorkeler breathing CO2. Do you really feel like sighing in an elevator? Now comes the FRESH-AIR SNORKEL: Mofl02™ with Jarvic IX-style, aortic valvulation & demarcation twixt in & out more tangible than that between church & state! With a double-valve twin chamber, the Mofl02™ clears easy with a double huff, for no headaches & more umph in your glug. Mofl02™ osmotic convection delivers 99% fresh air on every breath.
