GEOPHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES Haleakala National Park encompasses many microcosmic environments featuring plants and wildlife found nowhere else on the planet. As earth’s largest dormant shield volcano, it rises over 10,000 feet, with a ‘‘crater’’ 3,000 feet deep and a 21-mile circumference.

VISITOR CENTERS The Haleakala Visitor Center is located near the summit (Map H), 10 miles from the park entrance. Open sunrise-3 p.m. daily, it has interpretive exhibits and restrooms. For info call 808-572-4400. Kipahulu Visitor Center sits in the coastal portion

of Haleakala National Park and can only be accessed via the road to Hana (Map G). It offers daily orientations and is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. For info call 808-248-7375.

HAWAIIAN MYTHOLOGY Ancient Hawaiian chants tell of the demigod Maui who lassoed La (the sun) atop Haleakala (House of the Sun) in order to create longer days for his mother, who needed more time to dry her kapa cloth (tree bark fabric) in the sun.

Only with me, Snorkel Bob, do family values mean more fun on fewer dollars. Your junior barracuda will be reef confi dent in a Li'l Bubba™

snorkel and Li'l Mo Betta™ mask (Rx in stock!)–no snuks, leaks or implosion trauma. I, Snorkel Bob, have Rx masks for adults too and a Bubba dry snorkel on every set. The REAL MOLOKINI is an a.m. adventure that runs $55-120 on a seaworthy, hygienic vessel with snax, breakfast or lunch included. KIDS 6 & under go free on some, students are ½ off on others, & I, Snorkel Bob, give a FREE boogie board for

the week or Turtle Beach bag with 2 seats on most activities. So don’t be fooled by a FREE MOLOKINI. You will get what you pay for. Ask around. Or maybe you know the difference between a bargain and a value. Snorkel Bob’s Yacht Consortium sails every a.m. to Molokini in a fl eet providing luxury, economy & adventure, along with cleanliness, service & positive buoyancy on an outing you'll want to remember. Let the values continue…reserve multiple activities, get $5 off per person on 2nd or more activities. Because family values mean not paying too much and should not require a boiler-room.

1. Haleakala National ParkExplore the terrain of the world’s

largest dormant volcano, see the rare silversword plant (pictured above) and watch out for nesting endangered nene (Hawaiian ducks). Catch a sunrise or sunset at the summit too! Map H.

2. Maui Ocean Center is a world-class aquarium located at Ma‘alaea Harbor. You’ll see an incredible array of marine life —coral, rays, sharks, turtles,

jellyfish and much more. Located between Lahaina and Kihei, Map I:inset.

3. Whalers Village MuseumTake a fascinating history tour of 19th century whalers. See a replica of a ship’s forecastle where sailors lived. View antique artifacts and art

made of ivory. Whalers Village, Map B:B7.

4. Heavenly Road to HanaThis scenic two-lane highway hugs Maui’s cliffs and coastline. You’ll need to drive slowly on this winding road as you pass by waterfalls, parks and pools. Use caution on the one-lane bridges, Map G. See pg. 98.

5. ‘Iao Valley State ParkThe iconic ‘Iao Needle—a 1,200-foot monolithic lava rock ridge—lords over the valley where historic battles were waged by King Kamehameha. Also find Kepaniwai Heritage Garden nearby, Map A:F1.

6. LahainaThe name of this historical town means “cruel sun” and has been a hot spot since the early 1800s. Visit landmarks—like the banyan tree planted in 1873—art galleries, restaurants and nightlife, Map D. See pg. 65.

‘Iao Valley State Monument is steeped in Hawaiian history and lore. Located about three miles west of Wailuku at the end of winding ‘Iao Valley Road, this park is known for its lush, tropical vegetation and crystal clear stream. The valley was the site of Kamehameha the Great’s notorious battle with Maui warriors that ended in his conquest of the island. It was said that there were so many dead bodies they “dammed the waters” of the streambed, causing the area to be referred to as Kepaniwai. The park features paved walkways and botanical gardens for visitors to enjoy. Towering through clouds and reaching to the heavens is Kuka‘emoku, the famous landmark ‘Iao Needle, which rises 1,200 feet from the valley floor. One of the walkways leads up to a platform for viewing the needle and the valley basin out to Kahului Harbor. Interpretive signage provides a background on the history of the area. An ethnobotanical walk meanders down to the streambed, highlighting native plants. There is a fee to enter the park; it’s open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. daily. Back down ‘Iao Valley Road is Kepaniwai Park-Heritage Gardens, a tribute to Maui’s multi-cultural heritage. Since the 1950s, several cultural groups have created displays of gardens, buildings and statuary that exemplify their homelands. There is no admission fee to this County park. Take time to stroll through Korean, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, New England and traditional Hawaiian features. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in kiosks by ‘Iao Stream. Tucked behind the gardens is Hawai‘i Nature Center. Although the interactive center is no longer open, there are summer camp and community group programs available by appointment.

40 dining & entertainment section

Whenever visiting new or different places and cultures, one of the easiest ways to acclimate is with dining choices. The flavors of the tropics, along with produce from local farmers, are infused

into many dishes found on Maui.

AMERICAN Style, Island FLAIROn Maui, American staples—such as barbecue, burgers and milkshakes—meet tropical flavors. Family-friendly casual dining choices abound. All natural Maui pasture-grazed beef may be topped with unique relishes including pineapple or mango. Throw into the mix American comfort foods like meatloaf and fried chicken, and you’ll feel like you’ve discovered brand new cuisine.

Hawai‘i Regional cuisineHawai‘i Regional Cuisine is a distinct cooking style developed by leading island chefs. These culinary innovators turned to local fishermen, ranchers, aquaculturists and farmers for locally grown and raised ingredients. These ingredients are then combined with culinary elements from the chef’s background, be it Asian, American, Pacific Rim or European.

ITALIANPizza pies made with handcrafted crusts and distinctive toppings will delight everyone’s imagination. Delicious pasta dishes often feature freshly caught seafood flavored with island spices.

FROZEN TREATSWarm climate, cool sweets...the perfect combination for all ages. Freshen your day with taro-flavored frozen yogurt with lychee topping, Kona coffee-flavored gelato using island-grown ingredients, and shave ice with strawberry syrup.

THIS WEEK TIP Maui is the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands. It was formed by two volcanoes connected by an isthmus, a flat low lying land area. The West Maui Mountains dominate the smaller land mass, while Haleakala, at 10,023 feet above sea level, clearly dominates the eastern region. Since Maui elevations range from sea level to tall mountain tops, you’ll also find many climate zones. Before heading out for the day, keep that in mind when deciding what to wear.

One of the most historically significant places in Hawai‘i, Lahaina is renowned for its sunny skies, fertile plains, sandy beaches and beautiful bays. In the 16th century, Lahaina was home to the great Pi‘ilani chiefs and in the 19th century, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i under the reign of the Kamehamehas. Lahaina has witnessed the comings and goings of warriors, kings, whalers, traders, sugar barons, heads of state, celebrities and world travelers. Today, Lahaina remains a popular place to visit. Everywhere you look, there’s a reminder of its rich history from one era to another. Lahaina Historic Trail offers dozens of interpretive signs and maps along Front Street and at landmarks. Banyan Tree Park is one of these landmarks, featuring the largest banyan in the U.S., the Old Courthouse with Lahaina Heritage Museum, Lahaina Arts Society and Lahaina Visitor Center. There are also five museums in the heart of Lahaina; brochures are available through Lahaina Restoration Foundation. Lahaina Harbor is home to charter boats that feature a wide array of activities such as snorkel and dive tours, sportfishing, sunset sails and a submarine ride. A visit to Lahaina wouldn’t be complete without taking in dinner and a show. Choose from Hawaiian lu‘au feasts, a world-class magic show and magical theater production. Restaurants abound and offer a cultural melting pot of cuisine, including Hawai‘i Regional, Pacific Rim, Asian, American, European and casual comfort foods. Many restaurants and bars feature scenic views and live music that capture island life.

This lovely gem of an island is part of Maui County and within close proximity of Maui island. Enjoy a romantic getaway for a few days at one of two luxurious resorts. Another option is to set out on a fun-filled day trip via boat or air to Lana‘i. Once there, the activity options are many: enjoy a game of golf at either The Experience at Ko‘ele that was designed by Greg Norman or The Challenge at Manele designed by Jack Nicklaus. If you’re up for some adventure, rent a car or jeep to explore the Garden of the Gods, the ultimate rock garden, or the ancient ruins of Kaunolu Village, a fishing village thought to be inhabited in the 15th century. Jump in your four-wheel drive and head out on Munro Trail that takes you through a rain forest to stunning views of Maui, Moloka‘i, Kaho‘olawe, Hawai‘i Island and O‘ahu. Stretch your legs a bit with a leisurely walk along eight-mile-long Shipwreck Beach; good for beachcombing, not so much for swimming. Hulopo‘e Beach is a protected marine life conservation area that’s a favorite with divers and snorkelers. On the left side of the beach is Pu‘u Pehe Rock, also known as Sweetheart Rock (pictured above).

Maui is a golfer’s dream, offering visitors a wide range of courses—many of them championship—which are top ranked in the world. Each course features its own unique variety of terrain elements and every one presents stunning backdrops of panoramic ocean views, high mountain slopes, misty rainforest valleys and more. Maui’s golf courses are scattered throughout Maui, Lana‘i and Moloka‘i. Some have been designed by noted

golfers and course architects, such as Robert Trent Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. This is the place where the pros come; don’t be surprised if you spot Geoff Ogilvy, Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els, Justin Leonard and others on the greens. The Magic Isle hosts a significant share of important golf tournaments including the PGA Championship season opener at the Plantation Course, Kapalua, and the LPGA Tour at Ka‘anapali Golf Courses. For in-depth lessons and instruction, the David Leadbetter Golf Academy and Kapalua Golf Academy can help. Whether you’re an adult or junior golfer, imagine shooting your best game as crashing waves sprinkle sea foam into the air and some of the most beautiful picture perfect backgrounds in the world!

Go upcountryExplore Maui’s breadbasket

The fertile volcanic slopes of Haleakala offer a dramatic change in landscape and climate from Maui’s popular coastlines. As rippling waves of sugar cane and dense spikes of pineapples give way to vast spaces of green pasture land punctuated with towering stands of eucalyptus trees, temperatures drop and mist hangs in the air. The combination of volcanic soil, cool weather and moisture has given rise to thriving produce, herb and flower farms. Upcountry is the perfect place for agricultural tours and adventure activities ranging from biking to ziplining. Visit Maui’s only remaining pineapple growing and packing consortium and sample the King of Fruits with Maui Pineapple Tours. In the arid ranch land of Omaopio, tour Surfing Goat Dairy, feed the goats and sample goat cheese delights. In upper Kula, explore an organic lavender farm, endulge in lavender botanicals and eat at the Garden Cafe of Maui Lavender. Bicyclists will enjoy biking down the volcano with Haleakala Bike 7 Ziplines

Baldwin Avenue in Makawao leads to the north shore plantation town of Paia, which is famous for windsurfing and kitesurfing at Ho‘okipa Beach. North Shore Zipline offers tree-to-tree canopy tours with ocean views. The picturesque streets of Paia are replete with world-class boutiques and an array of international restaurants. Live music can be found any night of the week in this hot spot. The slopes of Haleakala do indeed support a way of life for many isle residents. But be sure to get to the source—Haleakala National Park—and learn more about its significance. Catching the sunrise is the popular activity, but ending your day with the last rays of the setting sun atop the summit is just as rewarding and less crowded as well. Stick around for some star gazing too; the summit is one of the best places in the world to view the night sky. Be sure to dress appropriately and be prepared for all weather conditions. At 10,023 feet above sea level, the peak of Haleakala is the highest point on Maui. Snow is a possibility during the winter months.

The Pacific beckons... Upon landing in the islands, one of your first thoughts was to get to the beach. Well, you’ve made it! Here you’ll find activities guaranteed to please every age range—from a leisure snorkel exploration beneath the ocean surface to high-flying adventures that’ll level up the adrenaline. A note of caution: wherever you venture, be sure to observe all ocean safety guidelines posted at beaches and as ascertained from surf and weather reports, and water activity providers.

Soar above the water Parasailing combines the thrill of floating through the air while being harnessed to a parachute. Glide over the gorgeous turquoise Pacific Ocean as you’re gently pulled by a high-tech speed boat. Get high on a bird’s eye view of neighboring Lana‘i, Moloka‘i and the West Maui Mountains while secured in a one- or two-person harness.

Diving under:snorkel & snuba Imagine swimming among jewel-tone tropical fish and other marine inhabitants. On Maui, snorkeling and Molokini go hand-in-hand. This crescent-shaped islet sits two-and-a-half miles off Maui’s southern coast and rises 156 feet above sea level. Designated a State Marine Life Conservation District in 1977, it’s been

voted one of the world’s top 10 favorite snorkel and dive spots. Legend has it that the crescent-shaped isle is the result of a jealous rage. The volcano goddess, Pele, had a dream lover, Lohi‘au, who lived in Ma‘alaea. Lohi‘au married a mo‘o (lizard) and in anger, Pele bisected the lizard. The tail became Pu‘uola‘i Hill in Makena and the head turned into the Molokini islet. The hottest underwater activity on Maui is called “snuba,” a hybrid between snorkeling and scuba diving. Enjoy the freedom of breathing underwater with a regulator without the weight of a tank on your back. Instead, a harness worn on the body is connected to a long hose that’s connected to a raft floating above on the water. Explore down under to about 10 feet.

Skim across the ocean surface A jet ski ride involves maneuvering a personal watercraft propelled by jets of water. It has a seat and handlebars for steering, somewhat like a motorcycle ride on water (without the wheels, of course). There is typically room for two people. A kayak for one, two, or three paddlers is another great way to get really close to the water. Vendors may provide tours with knowledgeable guides who provide tips and share cultural and historical facts. Maybe you just want to go on cruise control. Take in the expansive coastline on a sunset or dinner cruise, listening to live Hawaiian music. Or, you may prefer to hunt the ocean depths for trophy fish!

Surfing Learning to surf on a longboard is the best way for a beginner to experience the sport. You’ll catch a variety of waves and it’s easier to stand up because of the greater surface area. Other surfing variations include body surfing or boogie boarding on four-foot boards. Another popular variation is stand-up paddle surfing (SUP). It provides a full body workout that engages the core area.

THIS WEEK TIP Indulge in tropical blooms around your neck by wearing a lei, arguably the single, most recognized symbol of Hawai‘i. The practice of giving and wearing lei is a year-round activity that celebrates birthdays, anniversaries, special achievements and more. The variety and style of lei are continually being tweaked by creative lei-makers. Popular flower lei often incorporate blooms of plumeria, orchid, tuberose or ginger. You’ll also find specialty woven lei crocheted with colorful ribbon or yarn.

77Rejuvenateon Maui

The tropical life offers the quintessential mode of “letting go,” something easily attained on the beaches of Maui. But consider alternate ways to rejuvenating spirit, mind and body. For example, you’ll find many fine resort spas dotting the island. There are also small establishments offering wellness treatments. Some of the options available include ancient Hawaiian healing methods, the use of medicinal plants, hot smooth stones (wela pohaku), touch techniques like lomi lomi massage or a healing session with a Kahuna (teacher). Whatever wellness treatment you select, be sure to discuss your preferences before booking the appointment.

Oftentimes, it’s not what lies at the end of a journey that’s as worthwhile as the journey itself. Such is the case with the drive to Hana on Hwy. 36. By necessity you’ll have to take it slow with the road’s 617 turns and 56 one-lane bridges, which takes nearly three hours to navigate—longer if you stop at the numerous sites along the way. The road is one of the nation’s Millenium Legacy Trails established in 2000 to protect historic roads and trails in America. You’ll enjoy waterfalls, parks, panoramic views and trails. Specific stops include Kaumahina State Wayside Park with a deck overseeing the coast; Keanae Arboretum featuring 150 trees; Wailua Valley State Wayside with its taro patches; Pua‘a Ka‘a State Wayside with small waterfalls and pools; and 122-acre Wai‘anapanapa State Park with a small black sand beach, a picnic area, native hala forest, cave, blowholes and camping.

a journey along the road to hana98 maui top sight

travel tipsHana Hwy. officially begins in Pa‘ia. Start your journey by 8:30 a.m. with a full tank of gas. Avoid driving at night.

hiking•Six miles past Hana at mile marker 45 off Hana Hwy. is the 95-foot Wailua Falls.•Leave Hana by noon if you plan on doing the ‘Oheo Pools waterfall hike. Located in the Kipahulu section of Haleakala National Park, a ranger station has info on where to pick up trail heads. Take the 15-min. Kuloa Point Loop trail down to the ocean or the Pipiwai Trail, noted as one of the best hikes on Maui. It’s four miles roundtrip and goes up to 400-foot Waimoku Falls.

Here’s how it works:as you know, trading CO2 (exhale) for O2 (inhale) occurs in billions of alveoli cells in the bronchial tubes & lungs, but not in the 4-6 inches from the trachea to the mouth hole—the stretch known as dead air space. A primitive snorkel triples dead air space, so you re-breathe the same air, which is like wearing the same sox or not changing your skivvies. Burning lungs with a heavy heart & head afflict the snorkeler breathing CO2. Do you really feel like sighing in an elevator? Now comes the FRESH-AIR SNORKEL: Mofl02™ with Jarvic IX-style, aortic valvulation & demarcation twixt in & out more tangible than that between church & state! With a double-valve twin chamber, the Mofl02™ clears easy with a double huff, for no headaches & more umph in your glug. Mofl02™ osmotic convection delivers 99% fresh air on every breath.
