Test Mania Did you know that your child will spend double the amount on
time takingtests this year compared to those in a similar grade
last year?! Yes, DOUBLE! Help decrease the number and duration of tests your child takes. Test Mania, a group of
parents, students, and teachers, is leading a letter-writing
campaign to state legislators. Read the Test Mania mission statement
here. On Wednesday, several members of the Test Mania steering committee met with Robert Ross, State Superintendent of Education, to discuss
concerns about testing.
Please take a few minutes to write a letter to state legislators.
Click here for the addresses. Some facts and talking points are available to
help you draft a letter, just click here. Writing your own letter is most persuasive, but if you do not have the time to come up with your own letter,
please use the sample letter found here. Join the Test Mania Facebook page,
or email [email protected] to find more information.
MYP Update Tuesday's Professional Learning time was well
spent during Shaker's first IB/MYP Academy.
Twenty five teacher-teams consisting of staff from across the district partnered together to
create and share learning sessions on the MYP
to present to their colleagues on Tuesday. These teams were unique in that they paired
educators from different buildings, giving them
an opportunity to share ideas, concepts and
experiences from many perspectives, all to be presented to an equally
diverse audience on Nov. 11.
Once the learning sessions had been created
and announced, all staff 5-12 signed up to
participate in their choice of three of the twenty-five learning sessions, meaning each
session was comprised of participants from
Woodbury, Middle and High School working together to enhance the student experience in
each building of the partnership. We learned a
lot on Tuesday, and did so in a collaborative way. A great thanks goes to the all of our
teacher leaders who prepared and shared the
twenty-five learning sessions!
Look forward to continued updates as we journey onwards as an MYP
district. For more information contact the High School MYP coordinator, John
Moore, at Moore_JM@s

"If I Were Principal For A Day" Writing Contest
For 11th and 12th Grade Students The 'If I Were Principal For A Day" Creative Writing Contest is open to
eleventh- and twelfth-grade students attending schools in the Fourth
Federal Reserve District, which includes Ohio. Prizes will be awarded
to the top three winners in each category: Essays and Poems, Plays,
and Short Stories. 1st Place = $500 Cash Gift Card, 2nd Place = $250 Cash Gift Card, and Runner-up = $100 Cash Gift Card.
The Challenge
If you were principal for a day, would you change the lunch menu or the food prices; or would the school day begin later and end earlier?
Would you change the course requirements, hire new staff, or build a
whole new high-tech building with a game room and windscreen TV?
This is your chance to choose. Write an essay, short story, poem, or play describing what you would do as the boss of your school.
As you craft your composition, think about the economic impact of the
new rules or goals that you propose.
What are the costs and benefits? Do the new rules respond to a demand?
What are the opportunity costs?
Do the new rules create any unintended consequences?
To answer these questions, you must think critically about some basic
economic principles. For example: Benefits; Costs; Demand;
Inflation; Opportunity Cost; Supply; and Unintended Consequences.
Each entrant must be under the supervision and direction of
educator/advisor. Entries must be accompanied by the Student Entry Form and must be postmarked on or before March 2, 2015.

In March 2014, a small group of scientists announced the detection of a new
relic from the early Universe. The observations they made were of a
particular pattern in the cosmic microwave background, the remnant heat
left over from the Big Bang. These results, if they hold up, are interpreted as an entirely new fossil from within the first trillionth of a trillionth of a
trillionth of a second after the Big Bang and will likely come to be viewed as
one of the most significant advances in cosmology in several decades. Dr. Kamionkowski will explain what these scientists may have found, the
implications for our understanding of the origin of the Universe, and where
we go from here.
The 2014-2015 Explorer Series features acclaimed scientists, authors,

Caring for Your Collection Series
Estate Planning for your Collection Join us on Sunday, November 16, 2014 at 3pm to hear William Anderson of
Carnegie Investment Counsel and Dr. Ware Petznick, SHS Executive Director
present Succession Success: Estate Planning for your Collection on Sunday November 16, 2014 at 3pm.
The workshop will focus on creating a succession plan for the ownership of your collections. Even though over 25% of the typical collector's net worth
is made up of the value of their collections, little financial planning involving
collectibles is ever done. Without a thoughtful plan, typically 60% or more
of the dollar value of a collection evaporates in an estate. The workshop will provide you with some simple and not so simple ideas on how to improve the
legacy that your collecting has created.
Presenters at the workshop will include Dr. Ware Petznick of the Shaker Historical Society and William Anderson of Carnegie Investment Counsel.
Ware holds a B.A. in Art History from Wellesley College and a PhD in
Furniture History from the University of St. Andrews. She worked at a
number of museums before coming to Cleveland. William is an investment adviser and avid collector. One of his practice specialties is providing
counsel for families dealing with collections.
