Liturgy & Prayer

First Reading: Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48

Peter preaches to the Gentiles for the first time

in the house of Cornelius. Peter realized that

God would accept any person who acted up-rightly, regardless of his or her heritage. Then

the Holy Spirit descended on the Gentiles and

Peter allowed them to be baptized in the name

of Jesus.

Second Reading: I John 4:7-10

John advises all believers to love one another,

for love is a gift from God. The person without love does not know God, whose love for us is

so great he sent his only son so that we might

have life through him.

Gospel: John 15:9-17

Jesus asks his disciples to live on in his love

and to “Love one another as I have loved you.” He explains that he chose them to follow him,

and promises if they keep his commandments

they will have anything that they ask for in his

name.

Our Lady of Guadalupe

In anticipation of the Diocese of Metuchen Consecration to Our Lady of Guadalupe, the

Hispanic Ministry has so generously donated to

St. Magdalen a painting of Our Lady of Guadalupe for our

Narthex. This painting was blessed by Cardinal Archbishop Carlos

Aguiar Retes before making it’s way from Mexico to

Flemington. Thank you !!

We will be praying for all Mothers during

the Month of May. Please return the completed

Mother’s day Remembrance envelopes in

collection basket or to the Parish Office.

We will pray for all the Mother’s

that are written on the envelopes during the month of May.

To better utilize the piano, the Music Director has moved the piano from the Church to the

Parish Center. The Parish Center is the center of many functions that occur at St.

Magdalen’s as well as Christmas Mass so it was determined that in it’s new location it can

serve the entire parish.

Habits and routines form and shape our experiences and our lives. These habits will help you make going to Mass more than a habit. Going to Mass is the ultimate form of prayer and should be a spiritual encounter with Christ.

I invite you to reconsider your Mass routines in order to more fully understand and appreciate the gift of the Mass. These practical

tips will help us recognize Jesus at Mass, give God the sacrifice of our praise, and become what we receive in the Eucharist for our lives and for the life of the world.

St. John Vianney once said, “If we really understood the Mass, we would die of joy.”

7 Things You Can Do To Get The Most Out Of Mass By Father Steve Flynn

1. Commit to never missing Mass.

Say it out loud to God and to your family. “As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15). Make Mass the first thing on your schedule by having a plan before the weekend starts. If you will be out of town, look up the closest Catholic Church make the plan or don’t leave.

2. Prepare for Mass.

Read the Scripture readings ahead of time. There are many apps and daily devotionals you could use. Getting familiar with and stud-ying the Scriptures ahead of time prepares our hearts to be rich soil for the Word to grow in us.

3. Plan on arriving 5 to 10 minutes early.

Something always comes up that can set you back a few minutes. Plan on being in the pew to slow down, settle, and open your heart

to the work Jesus wants to do in you within that Mass. When you choose to arrive late or leave early, you are saying something else

is more important.

4. Put on your Sunday best.

We dress up for things that are important to us. This little act of preparation is a witness to others that I’m preparing for something that matters to me. Once one of my nieces looked up at her dad and said “Church.” His shirt had a collar on it and she knew he must

be going to Mass.

5. Participate at Mass.

Enter fully into the celebration. You can respond confidently, sing boldly, listen attentively, return from distractions gently and imme-diately, remain until the final song is over, lead by example for your family and your parish.

6. Don’t be in a hurry to leave.

Take time after Mass to offer a prayer of thanksgiving. Make an effort to meet people on the way out. Many life long friendship began

by saying hello in Church.

7. Go forth with purpose.

“Do you leave Mass with a mission? There are people who desperately need what you have! Before you exit that pew before your genuflection is complete, and before you deactivate the car alarm in the parish parking lot, have a goal, a purpose, and a plan. Who are you going to invite next week? Who are you going to reach out to at work or school? What do you need to work on personally, and how do you plan to unleash the powder keg of grace within your soul in the coming hours and days? The question is not wheth-er you have been empowered at Mass but whether you comprehend the power that exists within you—and what you plan to do about it.” – Mark Hart, Behold the Mystery

Look around the world. There is racism, hatred, violence. People seem to be moving farther apart from one another and digging in their heels. We need Jesus. We need the Mass. We need to come together as one body in Christ.

Eucharistic Adoration: Q & A “Come to Me all you who are weary…” Matthew 11:28

What Does Saint Faustina say about Eucharistic Adoration?

Saint Faustina was born in Poland on August 25, 1905 and died in a convent of the Congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Krakow, Poland on October 5, 1938. She was a young religious with only three years of simple education. At the convent she performed the humblest

tasks in the kitchen, garden, or as a porter in humble obedience to the will of God.

On February 22, 1931, Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ first appeared to Saint Faustina with His message of Mercy for all mankind. She wrote of her many visions in her diary that was later published as the book Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul.

The first Sunday after Easter (this Sunday) is Divine Mercy Sunday. In April 2000, Sister Faustina Kowalska was declared the first saint of the

21st century. The Divine Mercy devotion is prayed by over 100 million Catholics daily and especially on Divine Mercy Sunday.

Saint Faustina was devoted to Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. She says, “Jesus concealed in the Host, is everything to me. From the tabernacle I draw strength, power, courage, and light. Here I seek consolation in time of anguish. I would not know how to give glory to God if I did not have the Eucharist in my heart.”

What God wants most from us is to turn to Him with trust because He is God. He loves us and cares for us. To have this trust, we must first ac-

cept His mercy. One of the prayers Jesus taught Saint Faustina that we can pray is: O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of mercy for us, I trust in You. (Diary, 84).

Evangelization

Saint of the Week

The 13th Day

Based on the memoirs of the oldest seer, Lucia Santos, and many thousands of independent

eye-witness accounts, The 13th Day dramatizes the true story of three young shepherds who experienced six apparitions of Our Lady be-

tween May and October 1917, culminating in the final prophesied Miracle of the Sun on Octo-ber 13. The film shares the secret given to the children by Our Lady, which was told in three parts and included a harrowing vision of hell, prophetic warnings of future events including

the advent and timing of the Second World War, the spread of Communism, and the attempted

assassination of the Pope.

The 13th Day can be found on Formed under “Watch”, “Movies”, “The Life and Witness of

Mary”.

Ministry

Many people who have separated and/or are divorced describe the experience as: emotionally draining, painful, spiritual upheaval, traumatic, challenging, necessary evil and/or a radical life transition. Some experience

confusion, feel misunderstood, isolated, and have many questions about issues they have never faced before.

Our mission is to assist in the healing process through Divorce Care, a two-part program that is both a workshop and support group. The program facilitators are lay people who are living examples of life after divorce. We want you to know that there is hope for your future and for your children’s too. As you share your feelings and experiences in the Divorce Care group, you will become part of a family.

You are invited to participate in a divorce support group beginning mid May and concluding at the end of August. Meetings will be held one weeknight each week from 7:00 - 9:00 pm in the Spiritual Formation Center.

Please join us and begin your road to healing.

Please feel free to call our facilitators for more information, questions or concerns:

2018 Bishop’s Annual Appeal

Lighting a Fire in the Heart of Our World

Thousands of Catholics in the Diocese of Metuchen are directly or indirectly served

through diocesan agencies and programs funded through the Bishop’s Annual Appeal.

Some of these include: forming our seminarians to serve as our future priests; provid-

ing the catechists, youth ministers and lay leadership in our parish with the proper training; formation opportunities for our music ministers, readers and others with key

roles in our parish liturgies; providing counseling services and basic material needs for

the less fortunate; and much more. As an extra incentive, our parish will receive a

rebate of 50% of the amount collected over our parish goal to be used for our local

needs. Thank you to all you have already given to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. If you

have not yet made a gift, it’s not too late to participate.

Flavors of Italy

October 14th - 25th, 2018 Dear Friends,

I would like to invite you to a very exciting pilgrimage/trip to some of my most favorite parts of the world, Florence & Tuscany and

Rome & Castelli Romani. The trip has been designed to experience the deep religious sentiments of the areas, along with the cultural, and gastronomical peculiarities of the region. I have used Fratelli

& Company for 27 years. Fratelli designs the excursions to be personal, educational and spiritual. They always add extra touches, such as visiting an off the path winery, a cheese factory or monastery. It promotes conviviality and joviality. When you

return from a Fratelli trip you just didn’t visit sites you experienced a culture. It would be my pleasure to share my beloved Italy with you in October 2018. God Bless, Fr. Ken Brighenti

St.

Magdalen

Liturgia de la Palabra

Primera Lectura: Hechos 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48
