SVT HistoryThe Ford Special Vehicle Team (SVT) wasestablished in 1991 to polish the Ford Ovalby creating low-volume, factory-producedvehicles designed for those select fewwhose idea of driving is a high-powered,passionate experience – not just a meansof getting from point A to point B.In a move to support this spiritedenthusiasm, Ford Motor Company carefullyintegrated the wide array of talent in thecompany into a small, cross-functionalgroup of engineers and product planners, housed together under one roof with acommon mission: to create vehiclesspecifically designed to meet the uniqueneeds and desires of the knowledgeabledriving enthusiast.More than 400,000 SVT and FordPerformance vehicles were produced sincethe 1993 model year. These include theSVT Mustang Cobra and the Cobra R, theSVT F-150 Lightning, the SVT Contour, theSVT Focus, Ford GT, Shelby GT500,GT500KR and the F-150 SVT Raptor.

Team RS HistoryTeamRS traces its roots back nearly 60years from the Lotus Ford Cortina and TwinCam Escorts of the mid 1960’s, throughthe first RS branded Escorts of the 1970’sto the founding of Special VehicleEngineering (SVE) in 1980. Through the

1980s and 90s, SVE delivered a breadthof vehicles from exciting XR and RSbranded road going performance carsthrough homologation specials such asthe iconic Sierra Cosworth RS500. The firstST (Sport Technology) vehicle appearedin 1996 as the ST24 Mondeo. The firstcollaboration between Ford’s Europeanand North American performance teamsappeared in 2002 as the ST170 in Europeand SVT Focus in North America. In 2003,TeamRS replaced SVE in Europe asperformance car and motorsport personnelwere brought together as one team.TeamRS subsequently created the 2004Fiesta ST, 2005 Focus ST and 2009 FocusRS.

Ford PerformanceSVT and Team RS officially began workingtogether as one team in 2009. In 2015,these two teams, along with Ford Racing, were formally combined establishing FordPerformance as a single team responsiblefor all performance and racing orientedproducts and activities worldwide at FordMotor Company. Your Ford Performancevehicle represents the best of what FordPerformance has to offer from around theglobe. Your vehicle has been designed anddeveloped with the four hallmarks of FordPerformance in mind: Performance,Substance, Exclusivity and Value. We areproud and passionate about what we do,and we are glad you have made us yourchoice.Included in the purchase price of your FordPerformance vehicle is a one day class atthe Ford Performance racing school. INSTALLING CHILDRESTRAINTSRear Seat Delete (If Equipped)

WARNING: It is extremelydangerous to ride in a cargo area, insideor outside of a vehicle. In a crash, peopleriding in these areas are more likely to beseriously injured or killed. Do not allowpeople to ride in any area of your vehiclethat is not equipped with seats andseatbelts. Make sure everyone in yourvehicle is in a seat and properly using aseatbelt. Failure to follow this warningcould result in serious personal injury ordeath.

E216990

This is not a seating position. You cannotplace persons or child restraints in the rearof the vehicle with the rear seat deleteoption.

Vehicles Without Rear Seats

E216824

Once you have installed the child restraintusing the seatbelt, you can attach the toptether strap.Attach the tether strap only to theappropriate tether anchor as shown. Thetether strap may not work properly if youattach it somewhere other than the correcttether anchor.Perform the following to attach a childrestraint to the tether anchor.Route the tether strap as follows.

E216991

For coupe without rear seats, route thetether strap through the inboard slot of thefront passenger seat backrest or route thetether strap over the top of the seat. Youmay need a tether strap extension to reachthe tether anchor.

If you install a child restraint and youattach the top tether strap to the propertop tether anchor, do not tighten the tetherstrap enough to lift the child restraint offthe vehicle seat cushion when the child isseated in it. Keep the tether strap just snugwithout lifting the front of the childrestraint. Keeping the child restraint justtouching the vehicle seat gives the bestprotection in a severe crash.See the Child Safety chapter in your baseOwner's Manual for more information.

FUEL QUALITYChoosing the Right Fuel

E185193

Use only premium unleaded gasoline witha minimum pump (R+M)/2 octane ratingof 91. For optimal performance, usepremium unleaded gasoline with an octanerating of 93 or higher. The use of the correct fuel is an importantpart of the proper maintenance of yourvehicle, and a condition of the vehicleWarranty. For this vehicle, the use ofgasoline with an octane level of 91 orhigher is required. The use of gasoline withan octane rating lower than 91 willinvalidate the vehicle Warranty. It candegrade vehicle performance and lead tosevere mechanical damage.Do not be concerned if the enginesometimes knocks lightly. However, if theengine knocks heavily while using fuel withthe recommended octane rating, contactan authorized dealer to prevent any enginedamage. We recommend Top Tier detergentgasolines, where available to help minimizeengine deposits and maintain optimalvehicle and engine performance. Foradditional information, refer towww.toptiergas.com.Note: Use of any fuel other than thoserecommended can impair the emissioncontrol system and cause a loss of vehicleperformance.

Do not use:• Diesel fuel.• Fuels containing kerosene or paraffin.• Fuel containing more than 15% ethanol

or E85 fuel.• Fuels containing methanol.• Fuels containing metallic-based

additives, including manganese-basedcompounds.

• Fuels containing the octane boosteradditive, methylcyclopentadienylmanganese tricarbonyl (MMT).

• Leaded fuel, using leaded fuel isprohibited by law.

The use of fuels with metallic compoundssuch as methylcyclopentadienylmanganese tricarbonyl (commonly knownas MMT), which is a manganese-basedfuel additive, will impair engineperformance and affect the emissioncontrol system.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

WARNING: Always fully apply theparking brake and make sure you shiftinto park (P). Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in personal injuryor death.

WARNING: Do not apply the brakepedal and accelerator pedalsimultaneously. Applying both pedalssimultaneously for more than a fewseconds will limit engine performance, which may result in difficulty maintainingspeed in traffic and could lead to seriousinjury.

WARNING: When your vehicle isstationary, keep the brake pedal fullypressed when shifting gears. Failure tofollow this instruction could result inpersonal injury, death or propertydamage.

Note: You may not be able to shift out ofpark (P) unless the intelligent access key isinside your vehicle.Note: Unlike the typical automatictransmission that has a torque convertercoupling the engine to the transmission, thisvehicle has a dual clutch transmission, which couples the engine to thetransmission with two clutches in a similarfashion as a standard manual transmission.

Your vehicle has an electronic transmissionshifter. The transmission selector is on thecenter console. The instrument cluster displays the currentdrive range.

Park (P)With the transmission in park (P), yourvehicle locks the transmission andprevents the wheels from turning. Alwayscome to a complete stop before puttingyour vehicle into and out of park (P).When you switch the ignition off, yourvehicle shifts into park (P). If you switchthe ignition off when the vehicle is moving, the transmission first shifts into neutral (N)until it reaches approximately 3 mph(5 km/h) or slower, then shifts into park(P).

The electric parking brake may apply whenyou shift to park (P) without the brakepedal fully pressed. The electric parkingbrake applies when you shift to park (P)on large slopes. The electric parking brakereleases with the drive away releasefunction, or if you manually release it. SeeElectric Parking Brake (page 24).Note: A warning tone sounds if you openthe driver door and you have not shifted thetransmission selector to park (P).

Automatic Return to ParkYour vehicle has a feature that shifts intopark (P) when any of the followingconditions occur and your vehicle isstationary:• You switch the vehicle off.• You open the driver door with your

seatbelt unlatched.• You unlatch the driver seatbelt when

the driver door is open.If you turn your vehicle off when moving, your vehicle first shifts into neutral (N) untilit slows down enough to shift into park (P)automatically.Note: This feature does not operate whenyour vehicle is in Stay in Neutral mode.Note: This feature may not work properlyif the door ajar switch is malfunctioning. Ifyour door ajar indicator does not illuminatewhen you open the driver door, the indicatorilluminates with the driver door closed or aTransmission not in Park cluster messageappears with the transmission in gear andthe driver door closed, see your authorizeddealer.Note: If you have waited an extendedperiod of time, 2-15 minutes before startingyour vehicle, unlatching your seatbelt cancause this feature to activate, even with thedriver door closed.

Reverse (R)With the transmission selector in reverse(R), your vehicle moves backward. Alwayscome to a complete stop before shiftinginto and out of reverse (R).

WARNING: Move the transmissionselector lever to reverse (R) only whenyour vehicle is stationary and the engineis at idle speed.

Neutral (N)With the transmission selector in neutral(N), you can start your vehicle and it is freeto roll. Hold the brake pedal down when inthis position.

WARNING: In neutral (N) yourvehicle has the ability to roll freely. If youintend to leave your vehicle, make sureyou apply the parking brake.

Stay in Neutral ModeNote: Do not use Stay In Neutral Mode fortowing as the transmission shifts to park(P) if the battery voltage becomes low.Note: Stay in Neutral Mode is a temporaryvehicle state that works with the enginebeing in the running or OFF state. Extendedusage of Stay in Neutral Mode when theengine is OFF may result in a battery voltagereduction to the level where the vehicle mayno longer start. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in vehicle damagenot covered by the vehicle warranty. When in Stay in Neutral Mode, you canstart your vehicle and it is free to roll.To enter Stay in Neutral Mode, do thefollowing:1. Bring your vehicle to a complete stop.2. Shift into neutral (N).

3. Press the manual (M) button within 5seconds after shifting to Neutral.

Note: A Stay in Neutral Mode confirmationmessage appears in the information displaywhen your vehicle has entered Stay inNeutral Mode and the neutral (N) buttonon the transmission selector slowly blinks. To exit Stay in Neutral Mode, press thebrake pedal and shift to park (P) or startthe engine and apply brakes to shift toanother gear, for example drive (D) orreverse (R).

Drive (D)Drive (D) is the normal driving position forthe best fuel economy and smoothness.Shift the transmission selector to drive (D)to allow your vehicle to move forward andshift automatically through the forwardgears. The transmission shifts to the appropriategear for optimum performance based onambient temperature, road slope, vehicleload and your input.

Manual (M)To select manual (M), place thetransmission selector in drive (D) and pressthe M button in the middle of the selector. With the transmission selector in manual(M), the driver can change gears up ordown using the paddle shifters. Afterpressing the manual (M) button while thetransmission is in drive (D), you now havecontrol of selecting the gear you desireusing the (+) and (-) paddle shifters toupshift and downshift. To exit manual (M) and return to drive (D),press the M button again.

SelectShift™ Dual ClutchTransmissionYour vehicle has a SelectShift Dual Clutchtransmission. The SelectShift Dual Clutchtransmission gives you the ability tochange gears up or down without a clutchas desired.Selectshift is operational in both drive (D),known as Live in Drive, and manual (M).While the vehicle can be started as low as-22°F (-30°C), the transmission does notshift from park (P) until the transmissionfluid temperatures warms up above -4°F(-20°C).If the transmission is overheating fromextreme use, it can result in the followingsymptoms.Clutch Over Temperature: This messageindicates one or both clutches areoverheating and may open to protect thesystem. This occurs when the clutchabsorbs too much energy in the form ofslip, due to a variety of reasons. Some examples of what could cause thisare:• Launch control at an RPM set speed

higher than optimal for the currentconditions. The best mitigation is toeither lower the RPM set speed forlaunch control maneuvers, or notholding the RPM set speed as long inpreparation for launch control.

• Slow uphill driving with no throttleapplication, known as creeping, orusing the throttle instead of the braketo prevent rolling back on an uphillgrade. These maneuvers cause theclutches to be in a constant state ofslip. The best mitigation is to use thebrake when at a standstill, or find asafe place to stop and put thetransmission in park (P) until you canachieve a faster uphill speed ofapproximately 10 mph (16 km/h).

If the clutch opens for temperaturemitigation, clutch capability should berestored automatically after a brief periodof time. If drive capability is not restoredmomentarily, stop in a safe location andshut the vehicle off for 5-10 minutes. Ifthere are still transmission issues aftershutting the vehicle off, contact yourauthorized dealer.Transmission Too Hot Press Brake: Thismessage acts as a warning that thetransmission fluid is beginning to overheat. When a yellow warning appears in thecluster, you may notice a decrease inperformance as engine torque limits itselfto help cool the transmission fluid.Maximum torque limitation is indicated bya red warning. The best way to quickly coolthe transmission fluid and restore fullperformance is non-aggressive driving ata constant speed between 40–70 mph(65–112 km/h) in the highest availablegear.

Selectshift in Drive (D)Provides a temporary manual mode forperforming more demanding maneuverswhere extra control of gear selection isbeneficial. For example, when towing orpassing another vehicle. This mode holdsa selected gear for a temporary period oftime depending on driver inputs likeaccelerator pedal travel and the steeringwheel angle. To prevent the engine from either runningat too low an RPM which risks stalling, orat too high an RPM which risks enginedamage, Live in Drive automaticallydownshifts and upshifts if the enginespeed is approaching idle or redline andyou have not shifted in time. Although Livein Drive makes some shifts for you, it stillallows you to shift at any time if itdetermines that there is no risk of damageto the engine from lugging or over-revving.

BREAKING-INYour vehicle requires a break-in period.Drive your new vehicle at least 100 mi(160 km) before performing extended wideopen throttle maneuvers and at least1,000 mi (1,600 km) before operating yourvehicle at high speeds or track conditions.Note: Vary your speed frequently in orderto give the moving parts a chance to breakin.

Ground ClearanceSince ground clearance is reduced, usecaution when approaching curbs or curbstops from the front and rear as vehicledamage will occur. Additionally, whencrossing speed bumps or driveway curbs,Ford Performance recommendsapproaching at a 45 degree angle toreduce the risk of vehicle damage.Your vehicle carries the same warranty asother Ford models. Damage caused byaccidents, crashes or objects striking thevehicle (including driving through a carwash) or misuse of the vehicle, such asdriving over curbs, overloading or racing isnot covered under the new vehicle limitedwarranty. See the Warranty Guide forcomplete information.

Cold Engine OperationYour vehicle is designed to restrict enginepower and RPM when the engine is cold. The engine RPM and power output isreduced until the engine reaches fulloperating temperature. While you can start the vehicle as low as-22°F (-30°C), the transmission does notshift from park (P) until the transmissionfluid temperature warms up to above -4°F(-20°C).

DRIVING THROUGH WATERYour vehicle has aerodynamic devicesattached to the underbody designed tohelp control airflow for superiorperformance. Therefore, the driver mustbe especially careful to avoid drivingthrough deep or standing water. If drivingthrough deep or standing water isunavoidable, do not exceed 10 mph(16 km/h). Never drive through water thatis higher than the bottom of the wheelrims. Water may enter through the airintake due to the vacuum generated in theengine. Your vehicle warranty does notcover damage caused by the intake ofwater into the engine.

Note: Use only a Motorcraft FL-2087 oilfilter for maximum performance, reliabilityand durability.Note: The use of any oil filter other than thedealer supplied oil filter may cause enginedamage.See the Engine Oil Check section in theMaintenance chapter of your Owner'sManual for information on checking theengine oil.

ENGINE COOLANT CHECKThe concentration and level of enginecoolant should be checked at the mileageintervals listed in the scheduledmaintenance information.Note: Make sure that the level is betweenthe MIN and MAX marks on the engine andcoolant reservoirs.Note: Coolant expands when it is hot. Thelevel may extend beyond the MAX mark. Ifthe level is at the MIN mark, add coolantimmediately. The coolant concentration should bemaintained within 48% to 50%, whichequates to a freeze point between -30°F(-34°C) and -34°F (-37°C).Note: For best results, coolantconcentration should be tested with arefractometer such as Rotunda tool300-ROB75240 available from your dealer. We do not recommend the use ofhydrometers or coolant test strips formeasuring coolant concentrations.

Be sure to read and understandPrecautions in your Owner’s Manual. If thecoolant has not been checked at therecommended interval, the engine coolantreservoir may become low or empty. If thereservoir is low or empty, add coolant tothe reservoir. See Adding Engine Coolantin this chapter.Note: Automotive fluids are notinterchangeable. Do not use engine coolant, antifreeze or windshield washer fluid outsideof its specified function and vehiclelocation. For more information about enginecoolant, see the Maintenance chapter of theOwner’s Manual.

Adding Engine Coolant

WARNING: Do not add enginecoolant when the engine is on or thecooling system is hot. Failure to followthis instruction could result in personalinjury.

WARNING: Do not put coolant inthe windshield washer reservoir. Ifsprayed on the windshield, coolant couldmake it difficult to see through thewindshield.

WARNING: To reduce the risk ofpersonal injury, make sure the engine iscool before unscrewing the coolantpressure relief cap. The cooling systemis under pressure. Steam and hot liquidcan come out forcefully when you loosenthe cap slightly.

WARNING: Do not add coolantfurther than the MAX mark.

Note: Do not use stop leak pellets, coolingsystem sealants, or additives as they cancause damage to the engine cooling orheating systems. This damage would notbe covered under your vehicle’s warranty.Note: During normal vehicle operation, theengine coolant may change color fromorange to pink or light red. As long as theengine coolant is clear and uncontaminated, this color change does not indicate theengine coolant has degraded nor does itrequire the engine coolant to be drained, thesystem to be flushed, or the engine coolantto be replaced.• DO NOT MIX different colors or types

of coolant in your vehicle. Make surethe correct coolant is used. Mixing ofengine coolants may harm yourengine’s cooling system. The use of animproper coolant may harm engine andcooling system components and mayvoid the warranty.

• In case of emergency, a large amountof water without engine coolant maybe added in order to reach a vehicleservice location. In this instance, thecooling system must be drained, chemically cleaned with Motorcraft®Premium Cooling System Flush, andrefilled with prediluted coolant as soonas possible. Water alone withoutengine coolant can cause enginedamage from corrosion, overheatingor freezing.

Note: Do not use alcohol, methanol or brineor any engine coolants mixed with alcoholor methanol antifreeze coolant. Alcohol andother liquids can cause engine damage fromoverheating or freezing.Note: Do not add extra inhibitors oradditives to the coolant. These can beharmful and compromise the corrosionprotection of the engine coolant.Unscrew the cap slowly. Any pressurecould escape as you unscrew the cap.

Add prediluted engine coolant meeting ourspecification. See the Capacities andSpecifications chapter of the Owner'sManual for more information. Whenevercoolant has been added, the coolant levelin the coolant reservoir should be checkedthe next few times you drive the vehicle. Ifnecessary, add enough prediluted coolantto bring the coolant level to the properlevel.

Coolant Refill ProcedureThe following procedure should be usedwhen refilling the cooling system after ithas been drained or become extremelylow.1. Remove the pressure relief cap from

the coolant reservoir as previouslyoutlined.

2. Slowly add prediluted coolant to thecoolant reservoir until the coolant levelis between the MIN and MAX markson the reservoir.

3. Reinstall the pressure relief cap.4. Start and idle the engine until the upper

radiator hose is warm, which indicatesthe thermostat is open and coolant isflowing through the entire system.

5. Shut the engine off and let it cool.6. Remove the pressure relief cap from

the coolant reservoir as previouslyoutlined.

7. Add prediluted coolant to the coolantreservoir until the coolant level isbetween the MIN and MAX marks onthe reservoir.

8. Reinstall the pressure relief cap.9. Check the coolant level in the reservoir

before you drive your vehicle the nextfew times with the engine cool.

10. If necessary, add prediluted coolantto the coolant reservoir until thecoolant level is between the MIN andMAX marks on the reservoir.

WHEELSYour vehicle has unique wheels matchedto the tires. These wheels are moresusceptible to damage due to theirdiameter, width and low profile tires. To avoid damage to your wheels:• Maintain proper tire pressure (see Tires

in this supplement).• When installing wheels, always torque

lug nuts to specification with a torquewrench.

• Inspect your wheels for damage on aregular basis. If a wheel is damaged, replace it immediately.

• In the event that you encounter anabnormally harsh impact, inspect theouter diameter of your wheels, bothinside and out, for damage.

Use Motorcraft™ Wheel and Tire Cleanerto maintain your wheels. See your Owner’sManual for information on other cleaningproducts and vehicle care.

Wheel Lug Nut TorqueSpecifications

WARNING: When you install awheel, always remove any corrosion, dirtor foreign materials present on themounting surfaces of the wheel or thesurface of the wheel hub, brake drum orbrake disc that contacts the wheel. Makesure to secure any fasteners that attachthe rotor to the hub so they do notinterfere with the mounting surfaces ofthe wheel. Installing wheels withoutcorrect metal-to-metal contact at thewheel mounting surfaces can cause thewheel nuts to loosen and the wheel tocome off while your vehicle is in motion, resulting in loss of vehicle control, personal injury or death.

Retighten the lug nuts to the specifiedtorque at 500 mi (800 km) after anywheel disturbance (tire rotation, changinga flat tire or wheel removal).

lb-ft (Nm)*Lug nut size

150 ± 15 (200 ± 20)M14 x 1.5

*Torque specifications are for nut and bolt threads free of dirt and rust. Use only Fordrecommended replacement fasteners.

Carbon Fiber Wheels (If Equipped)

Carbon fiber wheels offer significantweight savings, while maintaining thestructural integrity of aluminum or steelwheels. These wheels have beenspecifically designed for your vehicle, andare not recommended for use on othervehicles or Mustang variants. Due careshould be taken when mounting andbalancing new tires to avoid damage. FordPerformance recommends only using yourFord authorized dealer for service.

The front carbon fiber wheels have athermal barrier coating on the back of thespokes and on the inner rim barrel. Thecoating works best when clean. Maintainthese areas with Motorcraft Tire andWheel Cleaner and warm soapy water.

TIRES

WARNING: Only use replacementtires and wheels that are the same size, load index, speed rating and type (suchas P-metric versus LT-metric orall-season versus all-terrain) as thoseoriginally provided by Ford. Therecommended tire and wheel size maybe found on either the SafetyCompliance Certification Label (affixedto either the door hinge pillar, door-latchpost, or the door edge that meets thedoor-latch post, next to the driver'sseating position), or the Tire Label whichis located on the B-Pillar or edge of thedriver's door. If this information is notfound on these labels, then you shouldcontact your authorized dealer as soon

as possible. Use of any tire or wheel notrecommended by Ford can affect thesafety and performance of your vehicle, which could result in an increased risk ofloss of vehicle control, vehicle rollover, personal injury and death.

Note: Do not use tire chains on your vehicle. The use of any type of tire chain on thesetires could damage your vehicle.Your vehicle is equipped with low profile, high performance tires that are designedto optimize the driving dynamics youexpect in a Ford Performance vehicle. These tires are not optimized for off-roador winter (snow or cold weather)performance, and their ride, noise and wearcharacteristics are different thannon-performance tires. Also, because oftheir lower profile, the tires are moresusceptible to damage due to potholesand rough roads.

To make sure that your tires perform asintended, it is important that you maintainyour tires properly:• Your original equipment tires are

optimized for performance in both wetand dry conditions. We do notrecommend using the originalequipment tires when temperaturesdrop to about 45°F (7°C) or below(depending on tire wear andenvironmental conditions) or in snowand ice conditions.

• The tires were designed for track useand may exhibit significantly reducedtread life and increased tire noisecompared to the standard equipmenttires under normal driving conditions.Increasing the front camber settingsbeyond the factory settings may furtheraccelerate tread wear and induce tirenoise.

• For tire pressures, see the placardlocated on the B-pillar inside the driverdoor.

• Always maintain your tire pressuresaccording to the tire informationplacard on the driver door jamb, usingan accurate gauge.

• Tire pressures are specified cold andshould be checked after the vehicle hasbeen parked for at least three hours.Do not reduce pressure of warm tires.

• Check your tire pressure often tomaintain it properly. Tire pressure candiminish over time and fluctuate withtemperature.

• Do not overload your vehicle.Maximum vehicle and axle weights arelisted on the tire information placard.

• Extra caution should be taken whenoperating the vehicle near its maximumload, including assuring proper tirepressure and reducing speeds.

• Extra caution should be taken whenoperating on rough roads to avoidimpacts that could cause tire damage.

• In the event that you encounter anabnormally harsh impact, inspect yourtires for damage.

• Inspect your tires for damage on aregular basis. If a tire is damaged, replace it immediately.

• Proper suspension alignment is criticalfor maximum performance andoptimal tire wear. If you notice uneventire wear, have your alignment checked.

• When replacing tires, the only way tomaintain original performance is to usethe original equipment tire. If a differenttire is used, it should be the same size, speed rating and load rating and bereplaced as a set of four. Never mix tirebrands.

• Rotate tires as recommended in thetire rotation information. Your vehiclehas a staggered tire configuration.Rotate the tires from side to side only, not from front to back. See yourowner's manual for more information.

USING WINTER TIRESThe original equipment tires on your vehicleare designed to optimize its performancein dry or wet summer road conditions. They are not optimized for off-road orwinter performance and you must not usethem with snow chains. The use of anytype of snow chains with the originalequipment wheels and tires of your vehiclemay cause damage not covered by thevehicle warranty. We do not recommendusing the original equipment tires whentemperatures drop below 45°F (7°C) or insnow and ice conditions.Note: We recommend that you use winteror all-season tires when temperatures dropbelow 45°F (7°C) or in snow and iceconditions.• Use winter tires with the same load

index as the summer tires originallyequipped with your vehicle.

• If you fit winter tires with a speed ratingless than the original equipment tires,do not exceed the maximum speedrating for the tire. Do not operate yourvehicle above posted speed limitswhile using winter tires. Never performhigh speed driving with winter tires.

Please call the Ford PerformanceInformation Center at 1-800-367-3788 forspecific winter tire recommendations.

GENERAL MAINTENANCEINFORMATIONWhy Maintain Your Vehicle?Carefully following the maintenanceschedule helps protect against major repairexpenses resulting from neglect orinadequate maintenance and may help toincrease the value of your vehicle whenyou sell or trade it. Keep all receipts forcompleted maintenance with your vehicle. We have established regular maintenanceintervals for your vehicle based uponrigorous testing. It is important that youhave your vehicle serviced at the propertimes. These intervals serve two purposes;one is to maintain the reliability of yourvehicle and the second is to keep your costof owning your vehicle down.It is your responsibility to have allscheduled maintenance performed and tomake sure that the materials used meetthe specifications identified in this owner'smanual. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 61).Failure to perform scheduled maintenanceinvalidates warranty coverage on partsaffected by the lack of maintenance.

Why Maintain Your Vehicle at YourDealership?Factory-Trained TechniciansService technicians participate in extensivefactory-sponsored certification training tohelp them become experts on theoperation of your vehicle. Ask yourdealership about the training andcertification their technicians havereceived.

Genuine Ford and Motorcraft®Replacement PartsDealerships stock Ford, Motorcraft andFord-authorized branded re-manufacturedreplacement parts. These parts meet orexceed our specifications. Parts installedat your dealership carry a nationwide24-month or unlimited mile (kilometer)parts and labor limited warranty. If you do not use Ford authorized parts theymay not meet our specifications anddepending on the part, it could affectemissions compliance.

ConvenienceMany dealerships have extended eveningand Saturday hours to make your servicevisit more convenient and they offer onestop shopping. They can perform anyservices that are required on your vehicle, from general maintenance to collisionrepairs.Note: Not all dealers have extended hoursor body shops. Please contact your dealerfor details.

Protecting Your InvestmentMaintenance is an investment that paysdividends in the form of improvedreliability, durability and resale value. Tomaintain the proper performance of yourvehicle and its emission control systems, make sure you have scheduledmaintenance performed at the designatedintervals.Your vehicle is equipped with an intelligentoil-life monitor that determines oil lifebased on engine operating conditions.

Scheduled Maintenance

Page 75: This supplement is not intended - Mustang6G · • Cold air intake and filter. • Tubular exhaust manifolds. • High flow dual 2.75 in (6.98 cm) exhaust with X-pipe and valved mufflers

• Under normal operating conditions, amessage appears in the informationdisplay to indicate the regular oilchange interval.

• Under severe operating conditions, theoil change intervals reduce, and themessage interval adjusts accordingly.

You can drive high performance vehiclesin such a way that may lead to higher oilconsumption (this includes extended timeat high engine speeds, high loads, enginebraking, hard cornering maneuvers, andtrack use). Under these conditions, oilconsumption of approximately 1 quart per500 miles (1 liter per 800 km) is possible. As a result, you need to check the engineoil level at every refueling and adjust tomaintain proper levels to avoid enginedamage.Note: Oil level should not exceed themaximum mark on the indicator. SeeEngine Oil Check (page 39).When the oil change message appears inthe information display, it is time for an oilchange. Make sure you perform the oilchange within two weeks or 500 mi(800 km) of the message appearing. Makesure you reset the Intelligent Oil-LifeMonitor after each oil change. If your information display resetsprematurely or becomes inoperative, youshould perform the oil change interval. SeeNormal Scheduled Maintenance (page74).Your vehicle is very sophisticated and builtwith multiple, complex, performancesystems. Every manufacturer developsthese systems using differentspecifications and performance features. That is why it is important to rely upon yourdealership to properly diagnose and repairyour vehicle.

We recommend maintenance intervals forvarious parts and component systemsbased upon engineering testing. We relyon this testing to determine the mostappropriate mileage for replacement ofoils and fluids to protect your vehicle atthe lowest overall cost to you andrecommend against maintenanceschedules that deviate from the scheduledmaintenance information. We strongly recommend the use of onlygenuine Ford, Motorcraft orFord-authorized re-manufacturedreplacement parts engineered for yourvehicle.

Additives and ChemicalsThis owner's manual and the workshopmanual list the recommended additivesand chemicals for your vehicle. We do notrecommend using chemicals or additivesnot approved by us as part of your vehicle’snormal maintenance. Please consult yourwarranty information.

Oils, Fluids and FlushingIn many cases, fluid discoloration is anormal operating characteristic and, byitself, does not necessarily indicate aconcern or that the fluid needs to bechanged. However, a qualified expert, suchas the factory-trained technicians at yourdealership, should inspect discolored fluidsthat also show signs of overheating orforeign material contaminationimmediately.Make sure to change your vehicle’s oils andfluids at the specified intervals or inconjunction with a repair. Flushing is aviable way to change fluid for many vehiclesub-systems during scheduledmaintenance. It is critical that systems areflushed only with new fluid that is the sameas that required to fill and operate thesystem or using a Ford-approved flushingchemical.

By using severalimportant factors in its calculations, themonitor helps reduce the cost of owningyour vehicle and reduces environmentalwaste at the same time.

This means you do not have to rememberto change the oil on a mileage-basedschedule. Your vehicle lets you know whenan oil change is due by displaying amessage in the information display. The following table provides examples ofvehicle use and its impact on oil changeintervals. It is a guideline only. Actual oilchange intervals depend on several factorsand generally decrease with severity ofuse.

Operating at High Speeds andTrack DaysYour vehicle is capable of sustained highspeeds and track day driving.

Before operating your vehicle at highspeeds:• Verify your tires have the correct

pressures. See Tires (page 58).• Inspect wheels and tires for wear and

damage. Replace any damaged wheelsand tires.

• Check and set lug nut torque. SeeWheels (page 57).

• Verify fluid levels for oil, coolant, brake, and hydraulic fluid. See Maintenance(page 38).

• Change the oil and filter prior to use onthe track.

After operating your vehicle at highspeeds or track day driving, do thefollowing:• Set tire pressures to specification.• Check and set the lug nut torque. See

Wheels (page 57).• Check all fluid levels.• Refer to the Track Maintenance Interval

Chart. See Normal ScheduledMaintenance (page 74).

ExceptionsThere are several exceptions to the NormalSchedule:

Axle MaintenanceIf the axle fluid starts to approach themaximum allowable temperature, a yellowmessage appears in the informationdisplay stating that the axle is overtemperature and you should reduce yourspeed. Reducing your speed allows theaxle fluid to cool down to normal operatingtemperatures. Unless the wrench warningindicator appears, there is no need tochange the axle fluid if you receive thismessage.

If the axle fluid reaches orexceeds the maximumallowable temperature, a red

message appears in the informationdisplay along with a wrench warningindicator. Change the rear axle fluid at thenext convenient time. For example, if youare at a track it would be acceptable tochange the fluid after the track event, butbefore any additional track events oron-road driving takes place. The wrenchwarning indicator turns off when youswitch off your vehicle.

Change the axle fluid anytime an axle issubmerged in water.

California Fuel Filter ReplacementIf you register your vehicle in California, theCalifornia Air Resources Board hasdetermined that the failure to perform thismaintenance item does not nullify theemission warranty or limit recall liabilitybefore the completion of your vehicle'suseful life. Ford Motor Company, however, urges you to have all recommendedmaintenance services performed at thespecified intervals and to record all vehicleservice.

Hot Climate Oil Change IntervalsVehicles operating in the Middle East orlocations with similar climates using anAmerican Petroleum Institute (API)Certified for Gasoline Engines (Certificationmark) oil of SM or SN quality, the normaloil change interval is 3,000 mi (4,800 km).If the available API SM or SN oils are notavailable, then the oil change interval is1,800 mi (2,900 km).

Engine Air Filter and Cabin Air FilterReplacementThe life of the engine air filter and cabin airfilter is dependent on exposure to dustyand dirty conditions. Vehicles operated inthese conditions require frequentinspection and replacement of the engineair filter and cabin air filter.
