Fayette Friends of Animals Summer 2014 Featured Gem Featured Gem My name is Ram. You might remember me because I was on the cover of our autumn newsletter. I came to the shelter in 2010 with my siblings. I have been adopted twice and returned twice in my short life. I have been at the shelter now for almost 2 very, very long years. I am a good boy who loved having a fam- ily. I understand sit, stay and down. I walk well on a leash. I am also extremely intelligent and a quick learner. I am good with humans once they take the time to get to know me. I would love a family of my own where I would be the only dog so I could get all the attention and wouldn’t have to share. I now sit again watching all the humans come and go and adopt so many animals from here. Where is my family? When is it my time to get a 2nd chance at happiness? Please come visit and spend some time getting to know me. I may just be the one you are looking for. Love, Ram Sponsored by Suzie Johnson Meow! My name is Ireland. You might remember me too because I was on the cover of the winter newsletter. I am a beautiful almost 3 year old cali- co. I arrived at FFOA on August 16, 2012, almost 2 years ago. Before coming here I was in a foster home with Sara. My foster mom says I like atten- tion when someone pets me but I would rather not be held-you might mess up my fur. I do like play- ing with my toys. Even though I got along with the dogs at my foster home I would prefer a home where I am the only pet because other cats make me stressed and after living here at the shelter for almost 2 years who wouldn’t want their own place and family. Are you like me? Do you enjoy eating? Well, then we definitely could be best friends be- cause I certainly do. I’m not picky when it comes to my food because I enjoy both soft and hard food. I am ready to get out of here and can't wait to lounge on the couch with my new human or sit on a window sill and enjoy a different view. If you think I would fit into your family, please come visit me. I would love to see you and spend time together. June is Adopt a Cat Month so here I am and it’s June. Purrs, Ireland Sponsored by: Sara Gmutza This newsletter is dedicated in memory of Haley, beloved 20 year old cockatoo of Tara Pulig, a long time volunteer for Fayette Friends of Animals. Haley will be greatly missed.

PAWS FOR SPECIAL PETS is a program associated with the Fayette Friends of Animals whose efforts are di-

rected toward placing ldquospecial animalsrdquo Everyone loves puppies and kittens But sometimes people are less likely

to want to take on the responsibility of providing a loving home for an animal that may require special foods or

medical support Others are cautious about taking on the care of an older or disabledhandicapped animal and

still others dont feel equipped to handle an animal with trust issues or assertiveaggressive qualities This is under-

standable thats why the Special Pet program was established in 2005----to provide help and support to those

who feel called to take on these special creatures The PAWS program provides a variety of services to those who

want to take the responsibility of providing a loving home for these special animals Our services include evalua-

tion of animals by professionals in-home dog training as needed advertising resources to find homes for our long

term residents monetary help for needed and approved veterinary evaluationtreatment support for an animals

Looking for their forever home Some of our long term orphans

Here are just some of the wonderful felines that we have waiting for their forever home If you

would like more information about any animals pictured please call the shelter or come visit us

Grapes and Raisins

These can be toxic to dogs and cause kidney failure Researchers say there are still many unknowns about the toxicity of grapes and raisins including whether only certain types of dogs are affected but it is advised not to feed grapes or raisins to your pets in any amount

Avocados

Studies have shown that their

leaves fruit seeds and bark

can contain a toxin called

Persin which can cause vomit-

ing and diarrhea According to

the ASPCA the Guatemalan

variety which is commonly

found in stores contains the

most toxicity

Yeast Dough Dough that is not cooked and contains

yeast can rise in your petrsquos stomach causing pain and can potentially cause the intestines to rupture

Onions Onion Powder Chives and Garlic

These all can lead to gastrointestinal irritation and red blood cell damage All forms of onion can cause problems including dehydrated onions raw and cooked onions Cats are more susceptible than dogs but it can be toxic to both

Foods with a High Salt or Fat Content Excessive fats can cause upset stomach and potentially inflame the pancreas causing pancreatitis Salty foods can pose a risk for the development of sodium ion toxicosis according to the ASPCA Be aware that if your pet gets into food with a high fat or salt content she could experience stomach problems including diarrhea and vomiting

hazard to pets and they can also splinter and puncture your petrsquos gut or intestine Additionally do not feed your pet undercooked

meat or eggs as they can contain harmful bacteria

Macadamia Nuts These nuts can cause weakness vomiting tremors and hyperther-mia in dogs Symptoms generally last up to two days and usually ap-pear within 12 hours of ingestion

ChocolateCoffee amp Caffeine According to the ASPCA the substances in chocolate coffee and caffeine methlxanthines can cause vomiting diarrhea panting excessive thirst and urination hyperactivity tremors seizures and po-

tentially death in pets The higher the cocoa percentage the more dangerous the chocolate is making dark chocolate more toxic than milk or white chocolate All these products can cause vomiting

diarrhea and even death

areas of a petrsquos body They can

cause shock and even possibly

death
