Message From The Headteacher As we near the end of what has been a very positive and successful year, I would like to reflect on some of the significant events of the year and share how the school will be moving forward in the next academic year. Students at the school have continued to progress in their academic attainment and achievement. We are looking forward to a very positive set of examination results at Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5, with large numbers of Year 13 students set to go to university, higher apprenticeships and employment. In Key Stage 3 students have made very encouraging progress with the current Year 9 group moving on to their GCSE studies and on track for their longer term ambitions. There have been a number of highlights this summer term, but particular ones of note that I would like to comment on are: Sports Day has been one of the highlights of the summer term. It is a key part of the House system which embodies the values of community, competition and leadership. It was a pleasure to see the way in which students worked together to represent their House, compete fiercely and fairly, but always encouraging one another. Students showed great leadership in organising and supporting those in and outside of their year groups. The students were excellent ambassadors for the school with the staff at the sports stadium commenting on their behaviour. On Friday we held our end of year assembly, which was led by the Sixth Form Student Leadership Team (SFSLT): Jack Pepper, Head Boy, Olivia Buckley, Head Girl, and Deputies Rory Green, Emma Kiero-Watson, Aoife Tuohy, Sachin Thamna and Matt Symonds. It was a wonderful celebration of all that the school community has achieved this year, with the SFSLT confidently presenting to over 1,000 students and staff. As we move into the final week of term it is a delight to see the extensive opportunities that students are benefiting from during Enrichment Week. I am very grateful for all of the support of families in allowing and enabling students to participate in the wide range of activities at home and abroad. I would also like to thank the exceptional Glyn staff who have continued to go above and beyond in providing students with these trips. I would like to reiterate our thanks as a school to the tireless work of the Glyn PSA, led by Samantha and Scott Cragg. They have collectively raised nearly £30,000 which has benefited students` experience and facilities at school. The work of the PSA is a true embodiment of the community culture at Glyn. The other group I would like to thank is the Governing Body whose members have devoted vast amounts of time to supporting the Leadership Team and challenging us to improve further. They are all volunteers who make a significant contribution to the school, for which we are grateful. I would like to take the opportunity to highlight a notable staff retirement for the end of this academic year. A number of you will be aware of the retirement of Mr Kilpatrick after 25 years of service to the students and staff at Glyn. Mr Kilpatrick was also a former student, so has clearly done his fair share of time at Glyn! Mr Kilpatrick has been tireless, dedicated and professional throughout his time. He will be will be missed enormously, but we wish him well on his retirement and celebrate his example to future students and staff. Each school year brings some changes to staffing as colleagues move on to new challenges and stages of their careers. We have spent a considerable amount of the Spring and Summer term ensuring that we retain and recruit excellent staff and I look forward to introducing them to you formally in September, however I would like to say goodbye to the following colleagues. Phillip Wheatley, Headteacher

Sports Day Successes The time was upon us, and the school gathered once again at the David Weir Leisure Centre in Sutton for our annual Sports Day. An exciting start saw House groups gather on the green beside the athletics track, proudly displaying banners for their House colours; the sea of different-coloured vests was an equally impressive sight, testifying to the immense community of Glyn (as well as its friendly rivalry!). The day saw all students participate in several sports each, from field events in the park just beside the leisure centre, to the track events watched eagerly by an audience of teachers, parents, carers and students from the stand. Whether it was the 1500m, the Seated Volleyball (a particular favourite amongst Year 12s students!), the Dodgeball or the infamous Tug of War, the spirit of determination and participation made me very proud of our school community. We were even treated to a Sixth Form vs. Staff relay race, where students proudly swept into first place (the staff a ‘solid third’!). The Heads of House, whose deck chair occupying was less certain to earn House points or burn off the calories, nonetheless gave invaluable support to their students; the cheering on the sidelines by both students and staff reinforced this encouragement, where sporting ability came second to participation and determination. Indeed, 2016 saw a number of Glyn records broken, with 11 School Records: George Storey (7M) Cricket Ball throw A7 9SB 4X100m Joe Brown (8C) Cricket Ball throw A8 Daniel Roffey (9SB) High Jump B Sebastian Miles (7B) 300A Alex Payne (8SB) 300A Nathan Andrews (10O) Cricket Ball throw Stephen Baker (9A) Cricket Ball throw A9 Kristiyan Strehin (9D) Illinois Agility Run B Piers Harte-Jones (9T) 50m A Tatenda Shangazhike (10A) 50m A Congratulations to these students on their fantastic achievement; they will be going down in Glyn’s history books, and future competitors will be striving to exceed their records! The day was a resounding success; the complex coordination of the event required much work on Mr Menagh and Mr Hawkes’ part, and the support of staff and Senior Prefects in running the events must be commended. It was a wonderful opportunity to gather as a whole school and celebrate the amazing talent of our students, and recognise the positive attitude towards their House that they bring to events such as this. Congratulations to all involved, in any capacity, on another successful Sports Day! Jack Pepper, Head Boy

A Brighter Future… The end of the summer term always heralds the end of an intense period in schools. All examinations have been completed this term and it’s therefore appropriate, once again, to commend our students on their conduct and hard work and the staff who have given up so much time to give our students the best possible preparation. The Year 11 and Year 13 Proms gave students the opportunity to celebrate and relax in a glorious setting at Epsom Downs. Whilst the majority of Year 11 students will be returning to Glyn in September to begin their Sixth Form studies, we wish every happiness and success to those who are leaving us to follow a different path. The Year 11 students who are returning in September were joined by a huge number of external students in two Year 12 Taster Days which were universally well received. The rest of the school has been equally engaged in a range of enriching activities and we have seen House Drama, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and a splendid Lower School Concert taking place over the last few weeks, in addition to the plethora of activities which have taken place this week. We can't, of course, entirely cut ourselves off from the momentous events of the last few weeks in the wider world; the stability in a school's routine is in direct contrast to the instability in our own country and abroad at present. Division, bitterness, prejudice and indeed hatred seem all around us. It's beholden on all of us to ensure that none of these are evident at Glyn. Young people face an uncertain future, a future which can only be brighter if we show acceptance, fortitude, determination and, above all, tolerance. Mr Proctor, Assistant Headteacher

Should School Bus Drivers Have First Aid and Basic Life Support Training? Following the tragic loss of her son, a student of George Abbot School, who suffered an epileptic seizure whilst on his journey home on the school bus, a mother has called on the Government and Local Authorities to introduce a change in law requiring school bus drivers to have first aid and basic life support training. “There are no protocols in place nationally to assist drivers as to what to do in an emergency situation whilst driving the bus.” The bus driver who was involved in this incident had no first aid knowledge to support our student. To make matters worse, when another student phoned Chris' mother from the bus, she arrived on the scene 10 minutes later to discover that the bus driver had not yet phoned 999. Schools have to follow the legislation and guidance on staff to student ratios and first aid training when organising school trips, yet buses, who provide the service for the local authority to transport students to and from school, can have a single bus driver without any emergency response training as the sole responsible adult for a significant number of students. As a result, we would like to support Ms Baumker with her petition. We need to achieve 100,000 signatures to allow discussion to take place at Parliamentary level. We feel confident that many parents and carers would agree that some basic training in first aid/emergency procedures is essential for drivers of public transport in order to provide the best possible chances for passengers, possibly making a difference between life and death. If you would like to support this issue, please click the following link and sign the petition https://www.change.org/p/department-of-transport-protect-our-children-on-school-buses-before-another-child-dies#delivered-to Glyn School

Wimbledon Ball Boys The 2016 Wimbledon Tennis Championships once again provided Glyn with the opportunity to show off some of our finest talent. Stricter entry criteria for this year saw only the most able make it through to selection in January. Five months of intensive training led to all our boys being selected for the tournament. Adam Gordon 10B, Jamie Gibson 10M, Daniel McCarthy 10A and James Kelly 11A all had a huge amount of success on a mixture of show and outside courts. Adam and Jamie were invited to be part of the Guard of Honour on Ladies’ and Men’s Finals Day, whilst Daniel (Team Captain), was involved in the Heather Watson doubles match. James Kelly was ball boy for the ladies’ doubles semi-finals on Court One. Any current Year 9 students who think they may have what it takes to be selected for next year’s Wimbledon Championships (as Year 10 students) will have the opportunity to take part in Glyn’s training programme which will start in October. Mr Fry

Up and Coming Tennis Star! I am sure you will join me in wishing to congratulate one of our own up and coming tennis stars! Alex Bennett 7B has, until recently, been playing tennis for fun. Lately, Alex has started playing competitively with remarkable success. His tennis club recently finished top of their U12 Aegon Team Tennis league by winning all of their five matches; Alex competed in four of these matches and was instrumental in his team’s success by winning all four singles and all four doubles matches that he played. His record of eight wins out of eight was the best of all the players from the six clubs who competed in the league. In addition to this, Alex reached the final of his club U11/12 tournament after beating a much higher rated player in a nail-biting semi-final tie break decider. He only narrowly lost in the final to another higher rated player. As a result of his achievements, Alex was fortunate enough to get tickets to watch the Wimbledon Championships. Well done, Alex. Mrs Fairbrother, Head of Bourne House

43 Students Completed Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award Assessed Expedition 43 Year 11 students blew away the cobwebs of examinations and revision by undertaking their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award assessed expedition in the South Downs. Despite the inclement weather conditions, the worst many of us have ever seen on a Duke of Edinburgh expedition, including rain, wind and also some sunburn for variety, all of the students did brilliantly and successfully completed the expedition. Well done to them all for a fantastic achievement. Due to my departure from Glyn at the end of the summer, please direct all Duke of Edinburgh enquiries to Mrs Pearson who will be taking over from next year. Mrs Pearson can be contacted via email to:

Ghana Trip Update The first ever Trip to Ghana left on Monday 4 July and, for the last two weeks, the team have been working tirelessly on the project to refurbish the library of our partner school, Philip Quaque School in Cape Coast, Ghana. As I write, the project is finally completed and handed over to the school. The library (which was little more than a dark empty room before) now has electricity, lights, fans, desks and chairs, new paint, murals for the walls and the addition of many of the books that were donated by Glyn students and their families. The school was incredibly grateful and would like to express their heartfelt thanks to everyone at Glyn who helped to raise money for the project. Their students now have somewhere to read, study and learn. We also took over some science equipment which the students had never seen before and demonstrated some basic science experiments, which they were excited to see. The Glyn team is very pleased to have finished the project for Philip Quaque School and is looking forward to moving into the rest and relaxation phase of the Ghana trip at the beach, followed by our camping adventure in the Volta region. Ms Butler, Geography, International Status Lead, Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator

Glyn Psychology Oscars - A Festival of Film! On Thursday 14 June we held a festival of film, with a gala premiere of Year 12 student video projects. Whilst there were many excellent accomplishments, in particular a terrifying re-creation of Blakemore & Cooper’s Kitten study, it was a clean sweep for Bandura: The Movie, with Best Actress award going to Charlotte Lynagh, Best Actor award to Ben Sharpe (Ben was also awarded Best Motion Picture).

Thank you to all the students who worked so hard and were able to attend. Mr Thirkill, Head of Psychology

Off-Road Driver Training 16+ The PSA are very lucky to have been donated vouchers for RoadCraft Off-Road Driver Training held at Mole Business Park in Leatherhead on Sundays. This provides a course of junctions and road layout in a safe environment. These vouchers give 16 year olds the opportunity to start their driving practice before their 17th birthday. Training starts approximately a month before students’ 17th birthday and they don't even need to hold their provisional licence. The vouchers, available on ParentPay are only £60 and provide three hours off-road training. RoadCraft has been established for over 15 years, helping to qualify over 50 instructors and 1,000s of students with an ethos of teaching to a higher standard and safe driving for life, not just to pass the test. Their unique off-road course teaches students to handle the car confidently and to be prepared to start a safe and complete driving experience. Having the off-road course considerably reduces the number of hours needed for on-road lessons. Then if you choose to commit to a course of 10 lessons on road with Roadcraft, you will receive an additional hour off road with a free lesson of 45 minutes on-road. RoadCraft lessons are £210 for 10 lessons. They also have both male and female instructors. Other driving schools are charging £40 per hour for this off-road driving. These vouchers make ideal presents and they are now available to any friends or family, as well as Glyn students. Please email [email protected] for more information. Second-hand Uniform, Books and Revision Guides We would like to thank everyone who has made donations of second-hand uniform and GCSE A/AS Level revision books to the PSA. Our stock of second-hand blazers and PE kits is running low. If you would like to donate any items of uniform that your son or daughter no longer requires the PSA at Glyn School would be very grateful to receive them. Please hand your donations into Student Reception. If you are thinking of donating a number of items we will even collect, if that makes things easier for you. Any donated items will be made available for other families to buy and could make a real difference. All monies raised through the sale of second-hand uniform will be used to provide funding for extra resources at Glyn School. Your support of the PSA is very much appreciated. If you require any second-hand uniform or have donations to be collected, please either email us at [email protected] or message/post on our Facebook page, which also lists the current stock of secondhand uniform: https://www.facebook.com/groups/GlynSchoolPSA

Celebrating Success in Maths The Years 7 and 8 Mathematicians were awarded their certificates this week from the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge. Patrick Humphris (8A) won the Best in Year 8, and Owen Mackenzie (7C) the Best in Year 7 and Best in School. We would like to further congratulate Adam Whitehouse (7M) for his Qualification Certificate for the Junior Kangaroo in which the top 25% are invited to compete. Only the top 1200 out of approximately 250,000 Year 7 and Year 8 students are invited to participate in the Junior Mathematical Olympiad. They then complete a second two hour paper consisting of more complicated questions. Owen MacKenzie (7C) not only qualified, but has won a silver medal and a Certificate of Distinction which means he is one of the top 90 students who participated. We would like to congratulate him on an amazing achievement and hope he is able to continue this success into the future. The Maths Department

Anathema - The Expetones The long awaited release of The Expetones’ single ‘Anathema’, from former Year 11 students: Lewis Wade (11O), James Lawton (11O), George Bond (11O) and Aaron Baxter (11D), was released on 15 July! The single is now available for purchase at £0.99 on iTunes, Google Play, Deezer and Tidal and is also streamable from Spotify. We strongly urge students and staff alike to support these talented former students in their musical endeavours. You can also follow the band on twitter (@TheExpetones) or ‘like’ them on Facebook! Do We Have Your Correct Contact Details? We would like to ensure that we have up to date contact details for every student, especially at the start of the next academic year. If you have changed your email address, mobile, work or home contact telephone numbers, please let us know so that we can update our records and, therefore, ensure that you will receive all communications from the school. Please email any changes to contact details via the following email address: [email protected] Thank you.

Schoolcomms and Email Providers There appears to be a problem with a very small number of parents and carers not receiving emails via Schoolcomms, despite the email addresses being correctly entered on the school’s system. The issue is not with Glyn School or Schoolcomms, but with the email providers. Our IT Department have been in contact with Schoolcomms and advise parents and carers who are affected of the following: “The families who are experiencing a problem with not receiving emails via Schoolcomms are using a Yahoo, Talk Talk or Virgin Mail provider. Yahoo, Talk Talk and Virgin seem to have issues accepting Schoolcomms messages and mark them as spam before reaching the users’ mailbox. My advice to these parents and carers is to create a new email address on a better system, such as Microsoft or Google. Mr Baker, Service Desk Team Leader

Petition to Resurface the Tennis Courts in Alexandra Recreation Ground, Epsom I am petitioning Epsom Borough Council to resurface the tennis courts in Alexandra Recreation Ground in Epsom. The courts have not be resurfaced for over 10 years and currently there are no plans to have them maintained, despite their poor condition. The more people who sign the petition, demonstrating demand and use of the courts, the easier it will be for the Council to bid for funding and the courts be returned to their former glory for the benefit of all. I would be grateful if you would consider signing the petition: https://www.change.org/p/epsom-and-ewell-borough-council-save-epsom-s-alexandra-recreation-ground-tennis-courts Councillor Jane Race College Ward – EEBC

The Surrey Schools’ (0-12) Handicap Golf Tournament - James Crossett The Surrey Schools’ (0-12) Handicap Golf Tournament is the most prestigious and certainly the most challenging event in the competitive calendar. This year, it was hosted at Reigate Hill Golf Club with a record number of competitors. James Crossett 8T won this event last season so he was keen to put up a valiant defence. Due to the size of the field the organisers implemented a two-tee start, so James started his round on the 10th hole at 12.56pm. He battled what felt like an ever-present head wind, irrespective of his position on the course, and made some clutch putts to keep himself in contention at the turn. By doing so, he created and converted consecutive birdie opportunities before stringing together a series of pars on the way in. James ended up with a top-three finish and carded a net 70 (par 71). This was an excellent performance considering the Competition Standard Scratch (CSS) was 71. This means that he outperformed the majority of the field and surpassed his own handicap. Well done, James, and I look forward to hearing that you have retained the title next year! Mr Menagh, Head of PE and Games

Athletics Success! - Harrison Kite 9 Derby Having performed superbly at last year’s Sports Day for Derby House, Harrison was selected to represent Glyn at the 2016 District Schools’ Athletics Championships in the shot put back in May where he was placed fourth with a throw of 10.08m. This facilitated his selection to represent Central Surrey at the Surrey Schools’ Championships and here he produced a personal best (pb) of 11.20m to finish second. The Inter-County Schools’ Athletics competition on Saturday 18 June now gave Harrison the proud distinction of representing Surrey at the Inter-County Schools’ Championships and, although he could not reach the dizzy heights of his recent pb, he threw a creditable 10.73m to place him joint first in the ‘B’ string contest. We must now wait and see if he is selected to represent the region. Bearing in mind that, prior to June 2015, Harrison had never really ‘put the shot’, this sequence of events is therefore all the more remarkable and his progress curve exponential. He is currently considering the option of pursuing coaching at the local Harrier Athletics Centre in Ewell. Well done, Harrison, and good luck if the ‘regional’ team comes calling!

Mr Colombage, PE

2016 Surrey Youth Games (SYG) Surrey Sports Park, Guildford: 18 - 19 June 2016 Views from a Sports Park… On the back of two overall first places in the last three years, the second being in 2015, it was always going to be a ‘big ask’ to expect Epsom & Ewell to repeat this feat. Despite being the smallest borough of the 11 competing, initial registrations were substantially up on last year and the general expectation was that we would be in the running for a top three finish. When registrations officially closed in mid-April, the statistics showed that Glyn had increased its numbers year on year by an impressive 47%! The sports on offer to boys this year included: Basketball, Badminton, Touch-Tennis, Table-Tennis, Boccia, Boxing, Squash, Hockey, Netball, Swimming, Lacrosse, with Cricket, Football and Rugby being available to girls only. Epsom & Ewell were able to provide participants for all 15 sports; a situation which could not be replicated by any other borough. Of the 57 Glyn students who signed up, 23 were selected to represent the borough at the SYG finals weekend and this 40+% yielded 17 individual/team medal winners across eight of the sports as follows: Tommy Barrell – Silver (Badminton), Jay Chotai – Gold (Table-Tennis), Tom Gillespie – Silver (Touch-Tennis), Ben Glasspool – Gold (Lacrosse), Ollie Gray – Gold + Silver (Lacrosse + Touch-Tennis), Eddie Kearns – Gold (Lacrosse), Henry Maric-Murray – Silver (Squash), Tom Nightingale – Silver (Touch Tennis), Elliot Payne – Silver + Silver (Badminton + Squash), Ryan Purvis – Gold + Gold (Lacrosse + Table-Tennis), Elliott Roberts – Silver (Touch-Tennis), Marcus Roberts – Silver (Touch-Tennis), Edward Russell – Gold (Judo), Mikey Salmon – Gold (Lacrosse), Brendan Thompson – Silver (Badminton), Jaydon Tyler – Silver (Squash) and Nathan Yeates – Silver (Badminton). Significant achievements came in the shape of: the senior Badminton team who clinched silver (managed by our own Year 12s, Ali Bellagh and Gareth O’Brien); Ryan Purvis, Ollie Gray and Elliot Payne who claimed two medals each and Daniel Bennett and Sam Just who also made the teams for two different sports. Impressive results had steadily come in throughout the two days from all quarters of the magnificent Surrey Sports Park which amounted to Epsom & Ewell taking a well-earned 2nd place overall in the competition; a wonderful performance! A special mention must go to Glyn’s four SYG Young Ambassadors, Alex Feltham, Josh Jackson, Mackenzie Hurrell and Charlie Bainbridge, who turned up on the Saturday for a combined total of about five hours to help and support all the Epsom & Ewell teams and their managers. They all did a splendid job and have now been shortlisted for the ‘Young Ambassador of the Year’ award which will be revealed on Wednesday 13 July at the local borough’s gala review evening in the pleasant surroundings of the Epsom Playhouse (see separate report). Well done to all! Glyn’s Roving Reporter, Designate

Wishing you a restful summer holiday.

Sportsman of the Year - Mr Martin It has been yet another fantastic year for sporting achievement and individual triumphs at Glyn. With the new Sports Academy Leaders now in post, participation is set to further rise and some exciting funding opportunities with the various National Governing Bodies should support our more talented performers. With this being the last entry of the year, it seems fitting to award the final Sportsman of the Year to one of our most resilient and courageous sportsmen; namely, Mr Martin. I am sure that you are all aware of the challenges that Mr Martin has faced in recent months. His positive attitude has been an inspiration to staff and students alike whilst his mental toughness has left us all in no doubt that he will be exceptional as the new Head of PE and Games at Glyn. I shall not wish him luck, as I know that his talent on and off the field guarantees that he will not need it. I look forward to hearing about all of your successes this time next year! Yours in sport, Mr Menagh, Head of PE and Games

Sixth Form Teams Farewell Meal To celebrate the end of another fantastic season under the management of Mrs Mabbott, the Glyn Netball team, Glyn Basketball team and Glyn Social Football team gathered at Jimmy’s in Epsom (as is recent tradition) for a farewell meal. Glyn’s 27 person contingent shared a pleasant evening consisting of both reminiscing and looking forward to the next challenges they face, whether that be Year 12 students stepping up next season into the senior positions vacated by the Year 13

students, or the latter who will be leaving their school lives behind and entering entirely different lifestyles. The event culminated in an emotional farewell from the team captains to Mrs Mabbott, thanking her for all of her hard work and dedication over the past two years, as we presented her with a personalised gift. In return, Mrs Mabbott gave each of the Year 13 students a certificate with some of their sporting highlights from their Sixth Form careers and a small message that will be nostalgically looked back upon. Once again, thank you Mrs Mabbott for providing the Sixth Form with the opportunity to take part in competitive sport besides football and rugby. Sam Brooker, Deputy Head Boy and Basketball Captain
