    Growing Young

As I write this, I am catching my breath. In the last few weeks we have seengreat crowds at VBS, taken carloads of kids o to camp for a week, and joined

youth from other churches for two days of mission in Tyler. I am tired, but it isa good tired, a satisfying tired, a tired that comes from knowing God has bothblessed and been blessed by our work.

It has been encouraging to see so many young lives touched by the ministryof this congregation over the past few weeks. It seems every time I read newsfrom across our denomination, I read about aging clergy and aging

congregations signaling the beginning of the end for the United Methodist Church. Quite frankly, there have been many times over the past few years when we have resembled that trend aroundhere.

But the last few weeks have been dierent. I have seen signs of vibrant life, the kinds of signs weneed to see more and more of if Russell Memorial is to continue to be the vital presence for Jesus it

has been for more than 135 years here in Wills Point. We need to be a church family willing to dowhatever it takes to connect young people and young families with the life of Jesus.Well see more of these

signs this month as we delivertreats to teachers preparing fora new school year, as we blessbackpacks for students goingback to school, as we presentbibles to our new third graders, and as we advance children andyouth to the next age level. What an exciting time! I cantwait to grow young for Jesuswith you.Grace & peace,

Youth from Russell joined others from Cheatham in Edgewood and FirstMethodist in Grand Saline for two days of mission in Tyler last month.

Dear RMUMC,I appreciate greatly the gift that wasgiven for my graduation. I wish I hadbeen there, but life sometimes plays acold deck of cards and I received abad hand, but as God taught methrough a famous verse (Phil 4:13) Ihave overcome those obstacles andam now pursing a career in defending

this still great nation. I was asked byhigher ranking Naval personnel, Whydid you join? I replied, God. Family.Friends. I also swore an oath to thisgreat country and God knows I willdefend it to the death if needed. Noone since has asked me that question. And for that I walk as close as I canwith God through what RMUMCtaught me as a boy. I thank you alland God bless you all the days of your

    lives.Sincerely,Benjamin Carter, U.S.N.

    (cards of thanks continued)
