this is our de(s)sert island
DESCRIPTION
I made an error. This presentation is for explaining the use of geo-metry to measure-earth.First we calculate the perimeter; then find out the area; nextly organize the ortogonal street map and finally build up, up and up the skyscrapers in order to destroy the island. But after destroying it, as in the real life, we will try to rescue the island as the paradise it was.TRANSCRIPT
This is our De(S)sert Island
Our Paradise has got a contour: the line of the sea shore. We need to know how many kilometres of
beaches we’ve got.
To find out the perimeter, we divide the contour line into short segments. Now we measure each segment
by mean of the straightedge and sum all the segments. Those are linear kilometres.
Our island also has got a surface: the two-dimensional space we can walk about and…build skyscrapers.
To measure the area of the island, we make triangles all over, and calculate the
area of each triangle. Then sum all the areas. Those are square kilometres.
