Husky Cross Country: From A to ZACADEMIC EXCELLENCE — While successful in competition, Greg Metcalf’s

cross country and track and field teams have been equally outstanding inthe classroom, annually ranking among the University’s top athletic squadsin terms of academic achievement. In 2004, a UW-record 15 Husky crosscountry runners merited Academic All-Pac-10 honors, second-highestamong Pac-10 schools only to Stanford’s 16. Distance runners Andy Faderand Travis Boyd swept first-team All-Academic honors in both cross coun-try and track, while miler Angela Wishaar captured a second-straight firstteam Academic All-Pac-10 track accolade. In all, 22 Huskies earned Pac-10 All-Academic track honors in the spring, while pole vaulter Brad Walkerreceived his second-straight Academic All-America award.

ALL-AMERICANS — Thirteen Husky cross country athletes have combinedto earn 15 All-America certificates at the NCAA Cross country Champion-ships. The NCAA awards All-America honors to the top 25 finishers in boththe men’s and women’s races, adding one American for every foreign-bornathlete who receives the honor. Only one Husky, Regina Joyce, has everearned more than one All-America certificate.

BAINES, SIMON— It could be argued that fewer Huskies have ever made alarger impact in a shorter amount of time than Simon Baines, who com-peted just one season for the purple and gold. A native of England, Bainestransferred to the UW in 1993 and lifted the Huskies to their first Pac-10title and an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. The juniormade his UW debut with a win at the Pier Park Invitational, then showed itwas no fluke by capturing the Sundodger Invitational the following week, inthe process setting a course record that would not be broken for eightyears. His fourth-place finish at the Pac-10 meet equaled the best-ever bya UW runner at the conference meet, while his second-place finish at theNCAA West Regional, and subsequent 10th-placing at the NCAA Champi-onships established UW benchmarks that have yet to be broken. Thoughhe had a year of eligibility remaining, Baines opted to return to England in1994 to vie for a position on England’s national team for the World Cross

country Championships.

BELZ, CHRISTIAN — One of just four UWmen to lead the Huskies at the NCAACross Country Championships more thanonce, Swiss native Christian Belz domi-nated UW cross country from 1996-1998.An All-American with a 17th-place finishat the 1998 NCAA Championships, Belzled all UW runners at the Pac-10 andNCAA Regional meets for three straightyears, including top-10 finishes at both. Also an outstanding steepler, Belz twiceearned runner-up honors in the event atthe Pac-10 Track Championships, andranks eighth in Washington history with abest of 8:48.2 (hand-timed). Belz hasmaintained his success post-collegiately,representing his native Switzerland atboth the Sydney and Athens OlympicGames.

CARLSON, TARA — Over the past decade,Washington’s women’s cross countrysquad has risen to national prominence. While dozens of UW runners have con-tributed to that rise, perhaps no Husky cantake more credit than 1995 NCAA All-American Tara Carlson. In four yearsat Washington, Carlson helped lead the program from one that had sentrunners to just five of the previous 12 NCAA meets to one which has nowsent runners to 11 of the 12 NCAA Championships since Carlson’s debut1992 season. One of only two UW women ever to earn a top-10 NCAAcross country finish, Carlson placed eighth in 1995, and was the team’s topfinisher at the national meet in each of the previous two seasons. Carlsonled the Husky women for four consecutive years at the NCAA West Re-gional Championships — the only UW woman ever to do so — and earnedfour top-10 and three top-five finishes in that remarkable span. Carlsonranks second only to UW legend Regina Joyce on the track at 3,000- and5,000 meters, and earned All-America honors in the latter in 1995.

DEMPSEY INDOOR — Washington’s crosscountry runners need not fear the rain. When the weather becomes too roughto run along the shores of Lake Wash-ington, the Huskies head inside the80,000-square foot Dempsey Indoor, amulti-million dollar practice facility thatprovides training space for Washington’sfootball, softball, baseball and soccerteams, and a practice and competitionarea for the UW track teams. Since open-ing in 2001, Dempsey Indoor has becomethe prime indoor competition venue formany of the nation’s top collegiate tracksquads, as well as dozens of current andformer Olympic competitors. The facilityis named for California businessmanNeal Dempsey, a 1964 UW graduate, who gave a gift of $10 million in 2001 tobe split between the Business School'sProgram in Entrepreneurship and Inno-vation and intercollegiate athletics.

FAB FRESHMEN — Every year, it seems,a different UW freshman is able tosucessfully make the transition from highschool to college and excel in their firstseason. In the past two years, however, freshmen haven’t only been content with success — they’re out for wins.Laura Hodgson in 2002 and Brianna McLeod in 2003 each won their debutraces at Washington, a feat never-before accomplished in UW history. Priorto Hodgson, the only freshman ever to win a race at Washington was thelegendary Regina Joyce, who earned the NCWSA Region IX title duringher freshman season of 1980. McLeod’s win in 2003 sparked a banneryear for Husky freshmen, who accounted for six of the Huskies’ 14 runners(men and women) at the NCAA Championships.

GENDER EQUITY — The Husky athletic department is one of the nationalleaders in achieving gender-equity for its student athletes. In December of1997, The Chronicle of Higher Education cited Washington as "the onlyDivision I-A institution with an undergraduate enrollment that was at least50 percent female to have achieved substantial proportionality in both schol-arships and participation."

INNOVATIONS — Around the world, the University of Washington is knownfor much more than just fast runners. In fact, Washington graduates havebeen credited with some of the most signficant inventions of the 20th cen-tury. Included among those inventions are the first color TV tube, the origi-nal rabbit-ears antenna, vinyl, synthetic rubber, the first blowable bubblegum, and “talking books,” an early-20th century precursor of books on tape.Washington grads are also credited with inventing the first hard spacesuit, which for the first time allowed astronauts to venture outside their space-craft. Lest you think that the UW is only about technology, Huskies havemade significant advances in medical research, including development ofthe vaccines for smallpox and Hepatitis B, as well as the first long-termdialysis machine. With so many intelligent minds on campus, it should comeas no surprise that the University of Washington led all U.S. public univer-sities in funding from federal research grants in 2002, and ranks No. 1 infunding from federal grants since 1975. Eight members of the Husky familyhave been honored with the Nobel Prize, and nine more have earned PulitzerPrize recognition.

JOYCE, REGINA — Sit in on any conversation about the history of distancerunning at Washington, and inevitably the talk will turn to Regina Joyce. The only female Husky distance runner ever to claim a national collegiatetitle, Joyce’s legacy at Washington echoes to this day, and not only in thefour UW track and field records that have been hers alone for more than 20years. A native of Ireland, Joyce joined the Husky squad in 1980, the lastyear before women’s track and field was certified by the NCAA. Joyce wasoutstanding all season, winning the NCWSA Region IX Championship andtaking sixth at the AIAW National Championships, leading the Husky womento a 12th-place finish in their first-ever appearance on the national stage.Over the next three seasons, Joyce added national finishes of 11th (in1981) and 2nd (in 1982), and captured a NorPac Athletic Conference titlein 1982. Joyce excelled on the track at nearly every distance with schoolrecords ranging from 1,500-10,000 meters, three of which still stand, andan indoor record at 3,000 meters. As a freshman in 1981, Joyce completed3,000 meters in 9:00.20 to capture the AIAW National Championship in theevent, one of just three national titles ever won by a UW female in anyevent. Joyce opted to forgo her senior year in 1983-84 to train for the 1984Olympics, at which she represented Ireland in the marathon. Today, Joycelives with her husband in the Seattle area, coaches distance runners atEdmonds-Woodway High School and can still occasionally be seen in com-petition against the nation’s top collegians at Dempsey Indoor.

Husky Cross Country: From A to ZLINCOLN PARK — Since 1992, Washington has held all of its

home cross country competitions at Lincoln Park in West Se-attle. The scenic park on a ridge overlooking Puget Soundannually plays host to the Sundodger Invitational, and wasthe site of the 2000 Pac-10 Cross Country Championships. For more information about Lincoln Park, including drivingdirections, see page 46 of this guide.

NCAA STREAK — Washington’s women boast the nation’s sev-enth-longest active streak of NCAA Cross Country Champi-onships appearances, having qualified for the meet in eachof the past seven seasons. That streak coincides exactly withGreg Metcalf’s seven years as distance coach at Washing-ton; prior to Metcalf’s arrival in 1997, the Huskies had sent awomen’s team to just six of the previous 20 NCAA Champi-onships. Keeping the streak alive has been a remarkablebalance of veteran leadership — junior Anna Aoki and seniorDeeja Youngquist led the Huskies to an all-time best eighth-place finish in 1998 — and youthful exuberance, as exem-plified by a seniorless 2003 squad that leaned heavily onfour freshmen for a 19th-place NCAA finish. Following is alist of the 10 longest active NCAA Championships streaks:

Team Streak Year Began1. Georgetown 16 years 19882. Brigham Young 15 years 1989

Providence 15 years 19894. Colorado 12 years 19925. Stanford 11 years 19936. N.C. State 9 years 19957. Washington 7 years 19978. North Carolina 6 years 1998

Villanova 6 years 1998Arizona State 6 years 1998

PIONEERS — Prior to 1977, no Washington cross country team had made anappearance at the NCAA Championships, which began in 1938. HuskiesBill McClement, Bill Stolp, Chris Villani, Steve Surface, Gary Gustafson,Mark Hallenbeck and Bob Pierce brought that streak to an end, however, placing second at the 1977 Pac-8 Championships and earning the Hus-kies’ their first-ever NCAA Championships berth. The team did not have totravel far for the meet, which was held at Hangman Valley Golf Course inSpokane, Wash. Spurred on by family and friends lining the course, theHuskies placed 13th overall, with McClement leading all UW finishers in68th, two minutes behind champion Henry Rono of WSU. It would be 10years before the Husky men would return to the national meet as a team, though individual runners have competed almost every year in the quarter-century since.

RAIN — Sorry to destroy the myth, but Seattle is far frombeing the rain capital of the nation. While Seattle does experience frequent showers, its total annual precipitation ranksonly 113th in the United States, at about 38 inches, roughlyhalf as much as Tallahasssee, Fla. Compare that with Hilo,Hawaii, which receives 130 inches a year, or Yakutat, Alaska, which soaks up 161 inches in an average year! Among major U.S. cities, Miami, Houston, Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore,New York, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Memphisand Washington, D.C. each get more annual precipitationthan Seattle.

SUNDODGER INVITATIONAL — While Seattle University’sEmerald City Invitational is often confused for a UW homemeet, the Sundodger Invitational at Lincoln Park is in factthe only cross country meet hosted annually by the University of Washington. Featuring hundreds of the Northwest’stop collegiate and post-collegiate cross country athletes, aswell as invited collegiate squads from across the country, the meet has become an annual fixture on the Northwestdistance running schedule since its inception in 1992. Whilethe course has changed subtly over the years, distanceshave remained 5,000 meters for women and 8,000 metersfor men, both winding through some of the most beautifulrunning terrain in the Seattle area, with scenic vistas of Puget

Sound. Simon Fraser’s Emilie Mondor set the women’s meet record in2002 with a time of 16:05, breaking by one second the record of 16:06 setjust a year earlier by the UW’s Sabrina Monro. Western Washington’s PaulKezes clocked the meet’s men’s record in 2002 with a time of 23:42, justtwo seconds off the course record of 23:40 set by Stanford’s JonathanRiley during the 2000 Pac-10 Championships. For year-by-year results ofthe Sundodger Invitational, see pages 44-45 of this guide.

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS — — — — — Both of Washington’s cross country teamshave been outstanding in Pac-10 Conference competition, with the Huskywomen currently boasting a string of 15-consecutive top-five Pac-10 fin-ishes. That streak has its roots in Washington’s first-ever Pac-10 title, earnedin 1989. Having never placed higher than sixth since the conference ex-panded from eight to 10 teams in 1986, Washington sent notice that 1989could be special with wins at each of the first two meets of the season. TheHuskies entered the Pac-10 meet at Stanford a decided underdog to rivalOregon, which had won every conference title since 1976, but had lost toWashington two weeks prior at the McIver Park Invitational. Led by eighth-place finisher Michele Buresh, the Huskies loaded six runners into the top-20, scoring 65 points to handily defeat runner-up Washington State andthe third-place Ducks. Buoyed by their finish, the team two weeks latercaptured the UW’s first-ever NCAA Regional title, and placed 12th at theNCAA Championships, then an all-time best. The UW men added their firstPac-10 title in 1993, and the women brought home a regional crown in 1992.

Huskies at the IAAF World Cross Country ChampionshipsIn addition to their Olympic Games competition, Washington’s cross country athletes have also been a significant presence at the IAAFWorld Cross Country Championships, which have been held annually since 1973. Husky junior Laura Hodgson qualified for the juniorwomen’s race in 2003, placing 58th overall while leading the U.S. women to second. The 2005 meet will be held in Le Mans, France, inMarch. A healthy return for Carl Moe (above) and team-mate Mike Sayenko will be key for the Huskies.

Men’s Preview: Captains’ PerspectiveOne who previewed the upcoming Huskymen’s cross country season in June mighthave picked Washington to make a strongrun at the NCAA meet — three of the Hus-kies’ top-five from a 21st-place effort at the2003 NCAA Championships were returning, including No. 1 runner Mark Mandi(Everett, Wash.), super frosh Carl Moe (Au-burn, Wash.) and 10,000-meter force MikeSayenko (Bellevue, Wash.).

Junior Andy Fader (Everett, Wash.), cru-cial to the team’s near-upset of Oregon forsecond at the 2003 Pac-10 Championships, and 2003 Emerald City Invitational championTravis Boyd (Mukilteo, Wash.) were alsoback to round out the top-five, while a tal-ented group of freshmen headed by prep All-American Tom Wyatt (Lakewood, Wash.)were to battle a hard-working group of un-derclassmen for the final two traveling spots.

Just two months later, however, those plansare in shambles, with Sayenko sidelined bya broken leg, Moe experiencing lingering painfrom a spring foot injury, and Wyatt out witha bad back.

With Moe and Sayenko sidelined for the earlypart of the season, Mandi and fellow co-cap-tain Fader face the challenging task of pre-paring a young squad for the rigors of thepostseason.

Mandi may be the only healthy returningmember of the Husky seven which last fallsent UW to its first NCAA Championshipssince 1993, but both captains agree that isno reason to think the Huskies won’t be backon the line at the NCAA meet in November.

What was it like to finally make it tothe NCAA Championships last year?Mandi: “Being at nationals and representingyour entire school, with that ‘W’ on the frontof your jersey, is hard to describe. It’s notvery often that you can represent 40,000people — an entire city — in a race againsthundreds of other people who are thererepresenting their entire Universities, feelingthe same sense of responsibility to theirschools that you do to yours. Just having theopportunity to do that is indescribable.”

What made the biggest difference inqualifying for nationals?Mandi: “The biggest difference was depth. We’ve had a lot of great runners over theyears, but to win meets you have to run as ateam. Last year, in addition to the fourseniors, we had four or five other guys whocould run in our top seven.”Fader: “If you look at the results, we didn’thave any one guy way out in front — Markwas our top finisher at the NCAAs, and hewas 67th. What we did well was stay togetheras a group, and let our lead runners pull therest of us along to the finish.”

Will depth be an issue this year?Fader: “I don’t think so. Guys like AdamShimer and Kevin Peters are stepping itup and working hard this summer.”Mandi: “It’s an awkward situation for us. Ofthe seven who raced at nationals, only onereturns. But a lot of the younger guys reallystepped up this spring. Adam Shimer isstepping it up, and so is Kevin Peters.Travis Boyd has been smart about histraining this year and looks great. He’ll be abig factor this year. Matt Owen and JonHickey also look solid. There are definitelygoing to be some new faces in our top seven, but with familiar results.”

How has last year’s successchanged expectations for 2004?Fader: “People are realizing that we needto train together as a team; that was whatmade last year’s team great. Everyone putsthe team first now.”Mandi: “Just because I’m returning as theNo. 1 doesn’t mean I’m going to slack off.For us to be a top-10 team, which is what wewant to be, I am going to have to train ashard and as smart as I can to be peaking atthe end of the year. If I’m the No. 5 guy, butam an All-American, that’s great for our team. So, we’re focused on the team, but at thesame time, you know as an individual youhave to be as good as you can be to trulyhelp the team.”

What will it take for this team to besuccessful in 2004?Fader: “The biggest thing will be gettingCarl Moe and Mike Sayenko healthy. Ifthey’re healthy and able to run for us in thepostseason, then we’ll be in good shape.”Mandi: “I honestly believe that we won’t runour best team until nationals. I’m not tryingto take anything away from the guys who willbe running in Carl and Mike’s place, but ifwe’re already running well when they’regone, we know it’s only going to make usbetter when they’re back. If we’re runningsecond at Pac-10s without those guys, we’rein great shape for regionals and nationals.”

Is second at Pac-10s a realistic goal?Mandi: “Oh, yeah. Winning it is somethingwe can talk about, too. We were right withOregon for second place last year, andStanford graduated a lot of guys.”Fader: “They’re not as invincible as theyused to be. Mark beat half of their guys atPac-10s last year, so if we run well, I thinkwe can beat anybody in the Pac-10. WeSHOULD be second, in my opinion.”Mandi: “But we’re not going to let our guarddown. Every team is going to be tough, andevery team has guys that can surprise you. There’s so much that can affect the meet —injuries, weather, etc.—— that anything canhappen. But, we’re in good enough shapethat we feel confident that if we run our best,we can beat any team in our conference.”

Will any freshmen make an impact?Mandi: “Jeremy Mineau has put upsome great times in high school, so he couldmake an impact. Caleb Knox, too, looksreally good, and runs really fast. ArayaGobena is also really talented.”Fader: “ I think the standards on our teamare a lot higher now than they were in thepast. We’re deeper and better than we weretwo years ago, and we were deeper andbetter then than we were two years beforethat. Honestly, I don’t even think MarkMandi would make our team these days.”Mandi: “That’s probably true. I ran 9:34 inhigh school, and the guys we’re bringing innow are 9:10 guys. Our team is getting sogood; I probably wouldn’t even get a chance.”

What’s the most important quality adistance runner can have?Fader: “Focus and discipline; the ability togo out and train every single day, even whenyou don’t want to.”Mandi: “The best quality a distance runnercan have is belief. If you don’t believe youcan do it, you’re not going to go anywhere.”

What does running at Washingtonmean to you?Fader: “It’s the best experience of my life.”Mandi: “Running as a Husky is the biggestprivelege you can have. I appreciate what aprivelege it is to wear this jersey. I wasn’t anall-state runner in high school, so for me tobe here, representing this University, is likea second lease on life.”Fader: “Running is the most important thingthat I do. I put everything I can into running. You only get to run for so long; if you don’tmake the most of it, you’re cheating yourself.”

Washington returns six of its top seven, and 11 of its top 12 runners from a 2003 squad that earned a19th-place finish a the NCAA Championships. Senior captains Laura Halverson (center, #326) andLindsey Egerdahl (not pictured) will be counted on to lead UW to its eighth-straight NCAA meet.

Page 7: This Is Husky Cross Country - gohuskies.com

2004 Washington Cross Country 7

Lindsey Egerdahl (left) and Amy Lia will likely beamong the Huskies’ leaders in 2004.

For seven years, Greg Metcalf has di-rected Washington’s cross country programs. For seven years, the Huskies have neverfailed to reach an NCAA Championships.

To appreciate the difficulty of that accomplish-ment, consider that only six other schools —Georgetown, BYU, Providence, Colorado,Stanford and North Carolina State — boastlonger active NCAA streaks than the Hus-kies, who prior to 1997 had been to just sevenof the previous 20 NCAA Championships.

The streak encompasses nearly three gen-erations of Husky runners, from the Class of‘97, which began the streak with a 14th-placeNCAA finish; to the Class of 2000, freshmenin ‘97 who twice put the Huskies in the top-15; to the Class of 2004, tasked with extend-ing the streak to eight this fall.

In 2003, a fourth generation emerged, as fivefreshmen, led by Amy Lia (Bothell, Wash.)and Dallon Williams (Turlock, Calif.)formed the nucleus of a Husky squad thatovercame low expectations to earn a 19th-place finish at the national meet.

With six of the team’s top seven back, andtalented newcomers on the way, senior cap-tains Lindsey Egerdahl (Auburn, Wash.)— the team’s top finisher at the NCAA meetin 2003 — and Laura Halverson (Mica,Wash.) have set their sights on a high finishat the NCAA meet in November, and refuseto let their team settle for anything less.

How did the team come together soquickly in 2003?Egerdahl: “We shocked everyone, including ourselves. No one was foolishenough to think that it wasn’t going to be ahuge transition, and that it wouldn’t take ahuge leap for us to get back to the NCAAs.We all knew going into it that it was going totake a lot from all parties. We decided to worktogether and get to the NCAA meet.”Halverson: “We never settled. We went forit. We never felt that we had given our best;we always thought we could do better.”

How hard it is it for freshmen to runsuccessfully at the collegiate level?Egerdahl: “We can count on the fact thatevery year a freshman makes a move intoour top seven. But, in that case, we had fivefreshmen traveling — that was huge.”Halverson: “Our team in some ways hasalways been built around freshmen. Theycome in without a preconceived notion of whothey ‘can’ and ‘can’t’ beat; they just run.”Egerdahl: “They stepped up at Regionals.A lot of races early on didn’t go so well, butthey at least gave our freshmen experience.By the end of the year, they knew girls fromother teams, could compare themselves inthe race and judge who they wanted to racewith. That was a huge thing for us.”

Women’s Preview: Captains’ Perspective

Will having been through thattransition last year help in 2004?Egerdahl: “I had always been surroundedby great leaders, then last year we got tonationals and there were five new faces, andI was the only one who had ever competedthere before. It was a major transition for allof us. When the freshmen came in, theybrought a different vibe to the team, and ittook a while for us to adapt to them.”Halverson: “It definitely helps, becausethere’s not going be any awkwardness thisyear. We’ve been working together allsummer, and have common goals. We’rereally close. We love each other and we area bonded team.”Egerdahl: “I’m more comfortable with thisgroup of girls. I’m more willing to sacrificewith this group, this year, and I think we canall say that. I know these girls; I know theirwork ethic. We’ve been through so much. Iwould sacrifice all in a race for them, becauseI know that they would do the same for me.There’s a lot more energy and commitment.”

What are your expectations in 2004?Egerdahl: “We underperformed last year, because we didn’t know what to expect goinginto the season. We know now how good thisteam can be. Knowing everyone’s potentialmakes it imperative that we, as leaders, holdeveryone to that potential, and don’t letanyone slide. The younger girls have yearsto build upon, but for us, this it is it. We wantto be a top-10 team, and we want it now.”

What is your role as captain in 2004?Egerdahl: “There is no doubt that we havea lot of talent, and that this team will soonbecome one that will consistently contend fortop-10 spots. Our challenge is to make thathappen this year.”

Halverson: “To do that, we need to be moreconsistent all season. We may only haveseven people racing at nationals, but thepeople racing early on and throughout theseason are the ones who are going to get usthere. We need to race strong all year long.We can’t just rely on Regionals to get us in.”Egerdahl: “That’s a great point; intensitywill be so important. This team knows howto have fun. Our job, though, is to addcommitment, desire and accountability to theequation. That’s where Laura excels. On hardcourses, in hard races, Laura’s our girl, andshe brings all of us with her. I don’t think thereare many girls that can do that for their team.”

Who outside the top-six returneeswill challenge for a top-seven spot?Egerdahl: “Alison Tubbs is ready to go.She has as strong a mental game asanybody. Angela Wishaar is also one weare counting on. She’s leading our team inintensity this summer, and is setting aconsistent foot forward.”Halverson: “Kira Harrison, too, had agreat track season, and is ready to step upat 6,000 meters. She’s been training hard.”

Will any freshmen break through?Egerdahl: “We’re counting on AmandaMiller, but anyone could jump up.”

What will be this team’s strengths?Egerdahl: “Our biggest strength is ourability to have fun. You really have to enjoythe process. You only race five or six timesall year, so it’s important to enjoy training.”Halverson: “We have fun every day, but atthe same time, we’re able to flip that switchand be intense when it’s time.”Egerdahl: “We need to keep that intensityall season, from the first race to the last.Sometimes, we’re so focused on our endgoals, that we forget there are other steps totake in order to get there.”Halverson: “Coach Metcalf does a greatjob of keeping us focused. He finds a way tomotivate everybody, in ways unique to eachof us. He puts belief into an athlete evenbefore they know what they are capable of. Iput all of my faith in him, and know that if I dowhat he is telling me to do, even though I’mtired and it hurts, when we start peaking inNovember, I’m going to be at my best.”

How has this team maintained itssuccess for so long?Halverson: “When you do any sport forWashington, you’re expected to be good. You’re told from the moment you arrive as afreshman that anything less than success isunacceptable, therefore, you start believingfrom the start that you’re going to do it.”Egerdahl: “The athletics program atWashington holds itself to a high standardamong the other programs in the nation, andas an athlete, there’s an expectation thatyou’ll hold yourself to that same standard.”

As a youth running the hills and dirt lanesaround Ephrata, Wash., Greg Metcalfdreamed of being a Washington Husky.

Upon joining the Huskies as a junior in 1990,he dreamed of breaking records and earn-ing All-American accolades.

After graduating from UW in 1993 with anAll-American certificate on the wall and theschool’s fourth-fastest steeplechase time tohis credit, Metcalf dreamed of one day re-turning to his alma mater as head coach.

On Aug. 13, 2002, Metcalf’s latest dreambecame a reality. Having served five yearsas assistant track and field coach in chargeof UW’s distance runners, Metcalf wasnamed Washington’s 12th head track andfield coach, and just the fifth since Clarence“Hec” Edmundson took the helm in 1919.

Additionally, Metcalf continues to directWashington’s cross country squads, whichhe has built over the past seven years intotwo of the most talented in the U.S.

Washington’s women’s squad boasts thenation’s seventh-longest active streak ofNCAA Championships appearances, havingqualified for the meet in each of Metcalf’sseven seasons. The UW men, meanwhile, returned to the NCAA meet in 2003 for thefirst time since 1993, and are a consistentfactor at the conference and regional levels.

Including a 19th-place NCAA finish in 2003,Metcalf’s women’s squads have placedamong the top-20 at the national meet fivetimes since 1997, including a UW-recordninth-place finish in 1998.

Signs already exist that Metcalf may be turn-ing Washington’s track program towards asimilar era of dominance.

Washington’s women were 29th at the NCAAOutdoor Meet in 2003, Metcalf’s first sea-son, and tied for 18th in 2004, the latter topsby a UW women’s team since 1988. TheHusky men, meanwhile, have placed amongthe top-25 at the NCAA Indoor Champion-ships in each of Metcalf’s two seasons.

Husky individuals have shined as bright inthe last two years as ever before, combiningfor 25 NCAA Championships appearances, eight All-America awards, and two NCAAchampionships, while breaking schoolrecords on 27 separate occasions.

Metcalf has also prepared runners for out-standing careers after college.

Former Husky David Bazzi, an All-Americanand Pac-10 champion in 2001 and holder oftwo school records, was a member of theUnited States’ team at the 2001 World Uni-versity Games, and currently works as a UWassistant.

Christian Belz, meanwhile, twice the Pac-10 steeplechase runner-up, has won two na-

Coaching Staff

tional steeplechase titles in his native Swit-zerland, and has represented the Swiss ateach of the past two Summer Olympics.

In all, Metcalf’s runners have earned 11 All-America awards, five Pac-10 titles, 65 NCAAChampionships bids, and 14 school records.

Metcalf’s teams have also been among thebrightest at a school renowned for its highacademic standards. His cross country run-ners are five-time receipients of the Crosscountry Coaches Association All-Academichonor, and three Husky individuals haveearned Academic All-American acclaim. UWplaced a record 15 runners on the Pac-10’sall-academic cross country team in 2003,second only to Stanford.

Washington is the second head coachingposition for Metcalf, who served in 1996-97as the head cross country and assistanttrack coach at Auburn University. His Tigerathletes accumulated four All-Americaawards and seven NCAA Championshipberths. He coached the Auburn men’s teamto a second-place performance at the 1997NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Metcalf received a bachelor’s degree in ge-ography from UW in 1993 and completedall necessary coursework for a master’s ofscience in exercise physiology at Auburn.

A four-time Academic All-Pac-10 honoree atWashington, Metcalf earned All-Americanhonors at the 1992 and 1993 NCAA Cham-pionships. His best collegiate mark of8:41.17 ranks fourth among all-time Huskysteeplers. He also was a steeple finalist inthe 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials.

At Ephrata (Wash.) High School, Metcalfwon the 1987 state cross country title andthe 1988 1600-meter crown.

Metcalf and wife Kristin, a former Husky dis-tance runner, reside in Seattle with their new-born daughter, Mackenzie.

2003 Season ReviewEntering the 2003 season, the Huskies’

men’s and women’s cross country teamsseemed to have little more in common thanthe logo on their uniforms.

With four seniors in its top-seven, theWashington men entered the year deter-mined to break a decade-long streak ofNCAA Regional futility, and qualify for theirfirst national championships since 1993.

The women, meanwhile, — lackingeven one senior on the 24-woman roster— turned to an incoming class of freshmento extend the team’s streak of six-straightNCAA Championships appearances, theseventh-longest active streak in the nation.

Different paths, same goal: Waterloo,Iowa, and the Nov. 24 NCAA Championships.

Wins at the season-opening EmeraldCity Invitational by true freshman BriannaMcLeod and redshirt freshman TravisBoyd touted the individual strength ofWashington’s talented newcomers, while asweep of team titles at UW’s Sundodger In-vitational — just the third Husky sweep inthe meet’s 11 years — showed that bothteams understood how to balance individualsuccess with overall team effort.

Where the women relied heavily onfreshmen, including Emerald City winnerMcLeod and Sundodger team leader AmyLia, the men turned to their talented se-niors. None were more consistent than in-door mile All-American Eric Garner, wholed the Huskies in every varsity 8,000-meterrace for the second-consecutive year.

After a sixth-place women’s finish at theNotre Dame Invitational, and respective13th- and 16th-place efforts in the men’s andwomen’s races at Pre-Nationals in Water-loo, both Husky squads entered the 2003Pac-10 meet with something to prove.

Not content merely to extend a stringof four-straight top-five Pac-10 finishes, theUW men aimed higher in icy temperatureson the Washington State Golf Course.

Led by Garner, Washington upset twotop-20 teams en route to a third-place fin-ish, the UW’s best since a second-place ef-fort in 1994. The Huskies totaled 93 pointsat the meet, just shy of Oregon’s 91. Bothsquads were well behind championStanford, which won with 23 points.

Five Huskies crossed the line within 43seconds, led by Garner’s 10th-place effort.

“The leadership of our four seniors iswhat made this possible,” Metcalf said.“They have our team believing they can dowhatever they set their minds to.”

While Garner’s was a familiar face atthe front of the pack for the Husky men, theUW women were led by sophomore trans-fer Ingvill Makestad, the fourth differentHusky woman to lead Washington acrossthe line in the season’s first five races.

After having been forced to stop andwalk briefly in her cross country debut justtwo weeks prior, Norweigian Makestad hadno trouble with the Pac-10 course, placingninth to extend to 10 the Husky women’sstring of consecutive seasons with a top-10finisher at the Pac-10 Championships.

Makestad’s run sparked the Huskies tofourth overall, trailing top-ranked Stanford,No. 4 Arizona State and No. 15 UCLA.

“The Pac-10s proved that our teamscould take down some of the best in theregion, and was an important confidence-builder entering the Regional,” Metcalf said.“The Regional is what the whole season ispointed towards — every run, every work-out, it all comes down to one race, one shotto go out and grab an NCAA berth.”

Four of the nation’s top-23 women’steams and six of the top-27 collegiate men’ssquads fought for just two automatic, and2-3 provisional berths to the NCAA Cham-pionships at the West Regional at Portland’sBlue Lake Park. The Husky men sought toend a 10-year NCAA Championshipsdrought, while the women were bidding fora seventh-straight NCAA bid.

With the NCAA’s provisional berths de-termined by regular-season wins and a“bump” rule helping teams who run well attheir Regionals, Washington’s men knewthat a top-four finish and a win over 12th-ranked Oregon would give them their bestshot at a Championships berth.

The wet, muddy conditions slowedmany runners, including Garner, who heldback early before surging to the finish in 21stoverall. Just 21 seconds later, all of the Hus-kies’ top-five scorers were in, lifting Wash-ington to 162 points and a fourth-place fin-ish, one crucial spot ahead of fifth-place Or-egon, just two points behind.

“Those guys knew exactly what neededto be done, and they did it,” Metcalf saidafter the race. “They absolutely deserve tobe at the national meet.”

As with the men, the women knew afourth-place finish would bring them closeto a provisional berth, while a win over 11th-ranked Arizona State would all but assure aspot at the Championships.

It was Makestad again who carried the

Huskies’ torch, staying with the lead packthe whole way for a fifth-place finish, bestby a UW woman at the Regional since 1995.

Three more Huskies — junior LindseyEgerdahl and freshmen Lia and DallonWilliams, were among the top-26 finish-ers, while McLeod rounded out the top-fivein 37th. Washington’s 94 team points earneda third-place finish — it’s best since 1999— and relegated Arizona State to fourth, thus priming the Huskies for an NCAA run.

“This may be our program’s most sig-nificant day in the last decade,” said Metcalf, whose teams were, indeed, both given at-large invitations to the NCAA meet two dayslater. “These folks can be proud of whatthey’ve accomplished today for a long time.”

The at-large bids marked the first timesince 1989 that both Husky squads earnedNCAA invites, a feat matched among Pac-10 schools in 2003 only by Stanford.

Running first in the below-zero wind-chill conditions at the NCAA meet in Water-loo, Iowa, the Husky men set the tone forthe day with a 21st-place finish. For once, itwasn’t Garner at the front of the pack butsophomore 10,000-meter specialist MarkMandi, who placed 67th.

Co-captain Egerdahl, meanwhile, en-sured a banner day for the UW with an 81st-place finish, pacing the Husky women to a19th-place effort, the team’s fifth top-20NCAA finish in the last seven years.

In all, 13 of the UW’s 14 NCAA com-petitors made their NCAA debuts, withEgerdahl the only runner boasting NCAAexperience. With six of the team’s top-sevenwomen, and four of its top-seven men slatedto return, the forecast for 2004 is bright.

“A year of NCAA experience for allthose young folks on our men’s andwomen’s teams will be invaluable this year,”Metcalf said. “Last year really laid the foun-dation for an incredible season in 2004.”Lindsey Egerdahl

The Pac-10 selects an all-academic team inevery sport based on an individual athlete’s aca-demic and athletic excellence. A 3.0 overall gradepoint average is required for a student-athlete to be considered for the all-academic

2003 Season Reviewsquad. Washington has amassed the most Pac-10 selections in seven of the last 13 years.

In 1996, Tara Carlson completed a stellar careerwith the maximum number of first-team Pac-10All-Academic team selections, earning three crosscountry and four track and field honors from theconference. Carlson had a 3.68 GPA in speechand hearing sciences, and was an academic All-American following her senior season.

In 1990, the Huskies featured GTE Academic All-American Pat Johnson, who graduated from UWwith a 3.84 GPA and finished first in his class.

Entering the 2004-05 season, the Pacific-10 Conference upholds its tradition as the“Conference of Champions.”® Pac-10members have claimed an incredible 84NCAA team titles over the past nine sea-sons, more than eight per academic year.

Even more impressive is the breadth of thePac-10’s success, as those 84 team titlesover the past nine seasons have come in 21different men’s and women’s sports. ThePac-10 has now led the nation in NCAAChampionships 39 of the last 44 years andfinished second five times.

Spanning nearly a century of outstandingathletics achievement, the Pac-10 hascaptured 336 NCAA titles (246 men’s, 90women’s), far outdistancing the runner-upBig Ten Conference’s 197 titles.

The Pac-10’s reputation is further proven inthe United States Sports Academy Directors’Cup competition, which honors the nation’stop overall collegiate athletics programs.

STANFORD continued its remarkable run in2003-04, winning its 10th-straight Directors’Cup. Four of the top-10 and seven of thetop-20 Division-I programs were Pac-10members: No. 1 STANFORD, No. 3 UCLA,No. 8 WASHINGTON, No. 9 CALIFORNIA,No. 15 ARIZONA, No. 16 ARIZONA STATEand No. 20 USC.

The Pac-10 captured 11 NCAA titles in 2003-04, more than double any other conference, including Stanford’s sweep of men’s andwomen’s cross country titles. Four differentPac-10 schools won at least one NCAA title, with UCLA leading the nation with four.

Overall, the Conference had 21 teams finishin the top three at NCAA Championshipevents. Participation in the postseason wasa common occurrence for the Pac-10 in2002-03. Of the 22 sports sponsored by thePac-10, 18 witnessed at least half its teamsparticipating in the postseason, includingindividuals from 22 of Washington’s 23 sports.
