Bison Good SportsIn 2006, the Bucknell Department of Athletics and Recreation announced its new “Bison Good Sports!” campaign, a

sportsmanship awareness program designed to promote appropriate fan conduct at all Bison sporting events. The objective of the campaign, according to Bucknell director of athletics and recreation John Hardt “is to thank fans for

the tremendous energy and enthusiasm they bring to each Bucknell athletics contest while also empowering them as caretak-ers of the collegiate gameday experience. While the extremes of unwanted behavior and its impact on home and visiting fans are not commonplace at Bison athletics events, Bucknell and our visiting teams ask for our fans’ help in keeping their support of our teams positive and cheer with positive encouragement, rather than supporting an atmosphere of intimidation that at-tempts to degrade opposing players and teams. We hope that our fans will continue to join our players, coaches and staff in helping all spectators find creative and ingenious ways to positively support our Bucknell student-athletes.”

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 24 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Boston University, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Loyola and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown, MIT and Richmond as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. The Patriot League will celebrate its 25th Anniversary as an all-sport conference during the 2015-16 season.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League also had 92 percent of its teams score above the na-tional APR average in the most recent data, and 101 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple: to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2014-15 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams have accomplished the following:

*101 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for ranking in the top 10 percent of their sport in Academic Progress Rate (APR), with 88 of those earning perfect scores.

*The Patriot League ranked second among all conferences in Public Recognition Awards, while Bucknell, Lafayette and Colgate all placed in the top six nationally.

*92 percent of Patriot League teams scored above the national average in APR, while more than 70 percent had at least a 990 score.

*Eleven student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-America rec-ognition, including first-team accolades for Navy’s Tom Buffone (Track and Field) and Ellen Bradford (Swimming and Diving), American’s Jen Dumiak (Women’s Basketball) and Fordham’s Brett Biestek (Football).

*Navy’s Tom Buffone (Track and Field) and Loren Generi (Women’s Lacrosse) and Lafayette’s Cory Spera (Baseball) earned NCAA Postgradu-ate Scholarships.

*Buffone and Dumiak were named the Corvias Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year honorees, respectively.

*Thirty-four student-athletes received Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition.

*There were 2,745 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2014-15, including 217 with a semester GPA of at least 4.0.

*Bucknell’s Ryan Frazier (Men’s Basketball) and Andrea Siefert (Women’s Rowing) each received the Patriot League Award of Outstanding Leadership and Character, while Lehigh’s Ashley Blanks (Women’s Soccer) was named the League’s Sportsmanship Award winner.

*Four Patriot Leaguers were named Senior CLASS Award finalists, with Colgate’s Caroline Brawner (Women’s Soccer) and Army West Point’s Sam Somers (Men’s Lacrosse) earning first-team recognition.

*Brawner was also one of the League’s nominations for the NCAA Woman of the Year award along with Boston University’s Valentina Cerda Eimbcke (Field Hockey).

*Navy won the Corvias Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the third time in the last four years.

*The Mids also won the men’s title while Boston Uni-versity repeated as women’s champion.

*Loyola won a pair of NCAA Tournament games to become the first Patriot League wom-en’s lacrosse team to advance to the quarterfinal round, and also finished in the top 10 of the IWLCA Coaches Poll.

*Fordham (Football) and Lehigh (Softball) also won NCAA Tournament contests

in 2014-15.*Fordham running back Chase Edmonds won the Jerry Rice Award as

the FCS Freshman of the Year.*Edmonds was also named the ECAC Offensive Rookie of the Year,

while Bucknell’s Evan Byers was selected as the ECAC Defensive Player of the Year.

*Twenty-four Patriot Leaguers were named All-Americans in team sports, with first-team status for Byers and Fordham’s Mason Halter in football and Navy’s Joseph Greenspan in men’s soccer

*Four Patriot Leaguers competed at the NCAA Cross Country Cham-pionships, and Lehigh’s Elizabeth Weiler became the League’s first female All-American since 2005.

*Lehigh’s Ryan Mahalsky became the first Patriot Leaguer since 2007-08 and sixth all-time to compete at the NCAA Championships for both cross country and outdoor track and field in the same season.

*Bucknell’s Emma Levendoski competed in both the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke at the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Cham-pionship.

*A League record nine student-athletes were selected in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Draft entering the 2015 season, with Army West Point’s John Glesener, Loyola’s Nikko Pontrello and Colgate’s Ryan Walsh among the top 11 picks.

*Navy’s Joseph Greenspan and Boston University’s Dominique Badji were both selected in the first four rounds of the Major League Soccer (MLS) Draft.

*Five Patriot Leaguers were taken in the Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft.

The Presidents’ Cup signifies overall excellence in the 24 sports sponsored by the Patriot League, and Bucknell has won the Cup 18 times in its 25-year existence, including 14 of the last 18 years.

The Presidents’ Cup is awarded an-nually to the institution that accumulates the highest point total over the entire academic year, with points awarded on the basis of the school’s finish in each of the 24 Patriot League sports. If there is a league tournament in a sport, the points are awarded based on the average of the regular season and tournament finish, and if there is no postseason tournament, points are awarded based on regular-season standings.

tion, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University.The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s

high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek.

Competitive sports at Bucknell dates back to 1870, and more than a century later Bucknell has established itself as a national leader in providing successful academic and athletic opportunities for student-athletes. As Bison Athletics seeks to create a comprehensive learning environment that meshes with the academic mission of the University, an important element of the complete student-athlete experi-ence is participation in an elite leadership development program designed to identify, develop, challenge and support student-athletes and coaches in their continual quest to become leaders in academics, in athletics and in life.

This is the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM• In the summer of 2011 the Bucknell Department of Athletics & Recreation implemented a formal leadership development program.• Initial workshops were facilitated by the Janssen Sports Leadership Center.• As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, the program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields.• Initially, a group of 60 student-athletes were identified as members. These workshops for both student-athletes and their coaches have set the stage for ongoing programming that will encom-pass the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy.

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to gradua-tion rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

• According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates three times and ranked second in the most recent survey in the fall of 2015.

• All 27 Bison varsity teams easily met the NCAA’s Academic Performance Rate (APR) standards once again last year. In fact, 19 programs boast perfect scores in the four-year rolling average. Bucknell received 19 NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) National Recognition Awards, the second-highest total among all Division I institutions.

• Bucknell has claimed a league-high 139 Patriot League Scholar-Ath-letes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

• A total of 441 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Hon-or Roll in 2014-15 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 319 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better during the spring 2015 se-mester.

• In addition to the 126 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 346 Academic All-District honor-ees over the same span, including five in 2014-15.

• Bucknell has earned 101 Patriot League championships in 25 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 129 conference players of the year, 110 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 605 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

• 26 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2015.

• Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 18 times in the 25-year history of the affiliation, including 14 of the last 18 years.

The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is intro-duced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

Among the programs the Bucknell SAAC has undertaken in recent years are regular volunteer trips to the Lewisburg Food Bank, and involvement with the “Orange and Blue goes Green” sustainability program.

“The big thing with Nick is he’s willing to do the little things on a daily basis with extra stretching, getting into the weight room extra time and getting on the court whenever he can,” Schwartz said. “That’s really what separates a player like that. I think he’s going to continue to improve. The big thing he wants is for the team to win the Patriot League Championship. Individually, there isn’t much more he can do in the league, so he is really focused on the team right now.”

Bybel certainly did his part to lead the team during the 2015 spring season, posting a dual record of 22-1, including a streak of 21 straight wins to end the season. He was a perfect 5-0 against Patriot League op-ponents during the regular season and added a pair of wins in the confer-ence tournament.

Sophomore Daniel Wright had an outstanding debut spring season last year, posting a record of 17-5. Schwartz was able to slot him in nearly any spot in the lineup, including No. 2 where he posted a record of 6-3. He was also 6-1 at No. 3 singles and 5-1 at No. 3.

Wright wasn’t the only freshman to post a winning dual record in his first spring season at Bucknell. Max Kane was 11-10, including a 6-6 re-cord at No. 5 singles. Ben Gerber went 7-6, bolstered by a 3-2 mark at No. 6. Adams found success at No. 3, where he went 4-2.

The Bison could receive a boost from the improved play of sophomore Timber Erskine this season. Erskine saw action in just two dual matches last season, but was outstanding this past fall. He went 7-2 in tournament play, winning the title at the Bison Invite and taking runner-up honors at the Farnsworth Invitational.

Playing their first spring season after a successful fall will be freshmen Max Haase, Max McDonald and Andrei Vitiuc.

The Bucknell men’s tennis team has high hopes as it gets set to open its 2016 season, setting its goals on winning the first Patriot League title in program history.

“You can tell they put in a lot of work over the winter, working on their conditioning and getting stronger,” said third-year head coach Craig Schwartz. “On the court we have been tuning up our game, and we are excited about this season.”

Bucknell was picked fifth in the nine-team Patriot League in a vote of the league’s coaches and sports information directors during the pre-season, but has its sights set much higher than that. The Bison have a reason to be optimistic after losing just one senior from a team that went 14-9 and advanced to the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament last season. They rolled past Colgate 4-0 in the quarterfinals and gave top-seeded Army West Point all it could handle before falling 4-2 in the semis.

“We have a lot of young players with just having the one senior and the one junior. But I think with the leadership we do have we are set to have a really big season ahead of us,” Schwartz said.

The team’s captain and unquestioned top player is Nick Bybel. The senior is the most prolific player in program history, earning Patriot League Player of the Year honors in each of the past two seasons. He is the team’s career record holder in singles victories at 93-25 and in overall victories at 160-55. This past season he teamed with junior Bryan Adams to win the Patriot League Doubles Team of the Year accolade.

Bybel became the first player in program history to earn a national ranking last season, and then debuted at 95th in the country this past fall. Currently, he is listed 18th in the rugged Atlantic Region. Twelve of the 17 players ranked in front of him are out of the ACC and Big Ten.

Craig Schwartz is set to begin his third season as head coach of the Bucknell men’s tennis team and his fourth season overall at Bucknell, having served as current Bison coordinator of tennis Rebecca Helt’s assistant for one year.

Schwartz led Bucknell to one of the biggest turnarounds in pro-gram history in 2015. Just one season removed from a rebuilding effort that saw the Bison tally three wins, they finished 14-9 and advanced to the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament. The season concluded with the Bison winning two major awards, as Nick Bybel was voted the PL Player of the Year and teamed with Bryan Adams to win Doubles Team of the Year.

Under the tutelage of Schwartz, Bybel has become the most accomplished player in Bucknell men’s tennis history and still has a season left to add on to his already impressive resume. The two-time Patriot League Player of the Year, as well as the former Rookie of the Year, he finished his junior season as the program’s career record holder in singles wins with a mark of 86-21. The re-cord was fueled by a Bucknell single-season record 38 wins.

Prior to his time in Lewisburg, Schwartz spent five years as the head men’s tennis coach and tennis coordinator at Queens Col-lege in Flushing, New York. He led the Knights to an 88-28 record during his tenure, and his teams earned NCAA Tournament bids each year, advancing to the Round of 16 in each of his final four seasons. of the Year in 2009 and the ECC Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2012, coached two ITA All-Americans, three ECC Players of the Year and 23 ECC All-Conference selections during his five years with the program.

Schwartz began his collegiate coaching career at his alma ma-ter, embracing two stints as the head coach at Dowling College during which time he compiled a 26-18 record. He guided the team to an NCAA Tournament berth and NYCAC championship in the 2003-04 season, earning NYCAC Coach of the Year hon-ors, and then returned to the program from 2005-07, leading the Golden Lions to two more NCAA Tournament appearances.

A 2001 graduate of Dowling, Schwartz was also an accom-plished collegiate and professional tennis player. He played at No. 1 singles and doubles during each of his four years at Dowl-ing, earning the team’s MVP award on three occasions and cap-taining the squad as a junior and senior. A three-time NYCAC All-Conference selection, Schwartz was ranked as high as 17th in the country in Division II singles play during his senior year, and was named the NYCAC Player of the Year as well as the ITA East Region Senior Player of the Year during that campaign.

Since his graduation from Dowling, Schwartz has remained active on the professional circuit, playing in numerous tennis tour-naments around the world and winning the USTA National Open Indoor doubles title in both 2007 and 2008. He has been ranked as high as 833rd in ATP doubles, and has obtained 43 world-ranking points throughout his professional doubles career. Addi-tionally, Schwartz spent over a year in Germany as the personal coach of Marlene Weingartner, guiding her to the 35th spot in the WTA singles rankings.

The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the play-ing fields and in the classroom. With 18 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 25 years, national leadership in graduation rates in 2015, 126 Academic All-Americans since 1970 and 139 Patriot League Scholar-Ath-letes in 25 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model.

The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success.

The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni.

Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Nata-torium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recre-ational athletes.

The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell gradu-ate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996.

One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construc-tion surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities.

As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its newly installed FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and new indoor instructional facility; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; the Becker Field softball diamond; and Emmitt Field and Gra-ham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.
