Pastor’s Letter October 24, 2021 Dear Parish Family, In the gospel both this week and last, Jesus asks the same question: “What do you want me to do for you?” Last week he put that question to the disciples. They answered that they wanted Jesus to make them great, and, like powerful rulers, to sit at his left and right in the kingdom of heaven. This week the question is directed to a blind beggar named Bartimaeus. His answer is simpler and humbler. He just wants to see. For a blind person, like Bartimaeus, wanting to see is certainly physical. Jesus might have asked him what it is he would like to see. He might have told Jesus that he would like to see the light of day, the faces of people, the blue sky, the boats on the Sea of Galilee. But sight in the scriptures is also a powerful metaphor. It is often used to teach us about faith. To be able to see and to recover one’s sight means much more than physically being able to see. This is something that we too are very familiar with. We often talk about sight when we mean understanding, such as when we are having a discussion or even an argument with another person. At a certain point, we might come to a deeper understanding of the other person and we express that by saying: “Now I see your point.” We can also use sight to express a deepening relationship. When people are becoming deeper friends or are starting to think about a committed relationship, we often say that they are “seeing one another.” On the other hand, we can often describe misunderstanding or anger as being blind to another person or their needs. In the gospels, sight is often used to describe faith and our relationship to God. The beloved hymn Amazing Grace says this well: “I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see.” This kind of wanting to see is very much behind Bartimaeus’ request. Yes, he wants the healing of his physical sight. But he also wants the kind of relationship with Jesus that brings about all the healing that is part of Jesus’ ministry. He has heard that Jesus is a healer and he would like to see if Jesus could heal him. Perhaps he would like to see Jesus and to be a witness to all that Jesus is doing. On a deeper level, he might want to understand why he is blind, to understand what place this infirmity has in his life. Can the suffering that blindness has brought him be part of God’s plan? What would you like to see? What would you like to better understand? For many of us, we might like to understand our own journey of life. Perhaps we would like to better understand the things that have caused us pain and suffering. Or maybe we are still finding our way in life and would like to see the path that God has for us. No matter what is behind our desire to see and understand, we, like Bartimaeus, can ask Jesus to help us see. Last week the disciples wanted Jesus to make them great. This week, Bartimaeus asks to see and know what God has in store for him. That is why Bartimaeus is a great model of faith and trust. Open our eyes Lord, and let us see your face.

I Want to See

Sincerely yours in Christ!

KEEP THEM IN OUR PRAYERS

Sometimes we hear or we say, “I’ll pray for you” or “I’ll keep you in mind.” What does this mean? We know that God holds each of us in God’s own love and care – eternally and irrevocably! So

what can our poor little “I’ll pray for you” do?

On Sunday, October 24, our confirmandi – the students who will be confirmed at Sacred Hearts parish on November 7 – are

making their Confirmation retreat after the 9:30am Mass.

Pray is an expression of our love, concern, and support. Please pray for our confirmandi. The gifts of Spirit include wisdom, understanding, fortitude, knowledge, love, joy, peace and

patience. These gifts are treasures for us, not only at the time of our Confirmation, but for our whole lives.

New to the parish or have a child in grade 1? We have begun religious education for this year. If you still need to register your child, download the registration information from the parish website or take a registration packet from the back of church. Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Jeremiah 31:7-9 Thus says the LORD: Shout with joy for Jacob, exult at the head of the nations; proclaim your praise and say: The LORD has delivered his people, the remnant of Israel. Behold, I will bring them back from the land of the north; I will gather them from the ends of the world, with the blind and the lame in their midst, the mothers and those with child; they shall return as an immense throng. They departed in tears, but I will console them and guide them; I will lead them to brooks of water, on a level road, so that none shall stumble. For I am a father to Israel, Ephraim is my first-born. Second Reading: Hebrews 5:1-6 Brothers and sisters: Every high priest is taken from among men and made their representative before God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal patiently with the ignorant and erring, for he himself is beset by weakness and so, for this reason, must make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people. No one takes this honor upon himself but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. In the same way, it was not Christ who glorified himself in becoming high priest, but rather the one who said to him: You are my son: this day I have begotten you; just as he says in another place: You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. Gospel: Mark 10:46-52 As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd, Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, sat by the roadside begging. On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, "Jesus, son of David, have pity on me." And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he kept calling out all the more, "Son of David, have pity on me." Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called the blind man, saying to him, "Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you." He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus. Jesus said to him in reply, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man replied to him, "Master, I want to see." Jesus told him, "Go your way; your faith has saved you." Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.

OLH NEWS The OLH Prep 8 students and their teacher, Mr. Christopher Scapellati, prepared the school liturgy for October 15 and welcomed Father Henry Leuthardt of St. Rosalie’s parish as the celebrant. The theme of the mass

was Faith and was inserted into the readings and intercessions.

The Fine Arts program at OLH has expanded to include a string orchestra, directed by Song A Shaughnessy. The twenty young students are learning technique of playing in a greater group in addition to their bi-weekly lessons.

The twenty-sixth annual Bucks for Books campaign, the major fundraiser for OLH, kicks off on September 13. The ten prizes, ranging from $500-$10,000, will be awarded during Catholic Schools Week in early February. The $100 chances are available now at the school or by mail upon request. Call 631-283-9140 for details.

Inquiries are now being accepted for the potential registration of three year old students in the OLH Pre-school at the Hampton Bays campus. The program is scheduled to begin in late January. Please call 631-283-9140 for details or refer to the www.olh.org website.

Reflection On the Gospel

October 24, 2021

No one takes … honor upon him or herself but only when called by God.

"Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you." … "What do you want me to do for you?" Sunday’s Gospel begins not with God calling, but with a blind man calling. Bartimaeus, the blind man, is calling out to Jesus. The Letter to the Hebrews tells us that honor comes only when called by God, not the other way around. But then Bartimaeus is not calling out for honor; he is calling for pity. In response, Jesus calls the blind man to him. Now the order is corrected. Assuming nothing, Jesus asks, “What do you want me to do for you?” Bartimaeus’s reply may seem obvious, but is it? He does not ask for honor or sight; he asks to see. Jesus does, in fact, give the blind man sight, but it is probably safe to say that Jesus also helped him to see. He honored this man with vision. Where do we fit into this story? Do we call out to God or do we listen for God’s call to us? And how do we respond when God asks us, “What do you want me to do for you?” Perhaps more challenging, how ready are we to ask others the same question? Are we as eager to see and to help others to see? Where is the honor in our behavior?

Eucharistic Adoration on Fridays

from 9 AM to Noon Pope Francis has declared this year to be time of intercessory prayer to St. Joseph. Joseph protected Mary as she gave birth to Jesus, he guarded Jesus from Herod’s attempts to destroy him, and he watched over the life and growth of Jesus with fatherly care. Now we ask Joseph to watch over and protect the lives of all, especially our children, born and unborn. Join us each week

Time to Sing Again After a long break our choirs are beginning to bring us beautiful music at Mass each weekend. Is it time for you join a choir? For more information please contact our music director, Dominick Abbate. You can reach him at: [email protected] (631)-873-7800
