RADICAL TRANSFORMATION

On this Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, the readings de-scribe anything but an ordinary time. They are disturbing and they leave us disturbed. The Old Testament reading recounts a young man's radical break with the past to follow a new path. The Gospel describes how life as we know it is abruptly changed if we follow the call of Christ. The psalm and Paul assure us that such life-altering change is possible only because of the power of God s love. We are presented with a stark choice. To love as God loves, we must leave our old lives behind. We must leave behind not just the bad, the selfish, and the evil but the ordinary, our daily work, and the important, our families, our lives. Loving as God loves requires a radical transformation, not a smooth transition. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Next Weekend

"No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God." Jesus' words may seem a bit harsh but are directly on target. The life of discipleship can be costly. Upholding the tenets of the Gospel can put us at odds, even with those most close to us. Jesus never misses an oppor-tunity to spend time with outcasts and sinners. It matters little to him whether doing so breaks a Sabbath law. The Gospel may seem unrealistic, but it is the Gospel nonetheless. We respect the dignity of all persons, from conception to natural death. We work on behalf of justice, which calls us to be with the poor, lonely, confused, and broken. The old "eye for an eye" mentali-ty no longer applies when it comes to dealing with those who hurt us. When Jesus asks you to follow him, will you go?

LIVE THE LITURGY

Independence Day:

Today throughout the United States, we celebrate our freedom. Our rights are protected and opportunities abound. We recognize that freedom has a cost, one we celebrate and honor on days such as this. It's good to honor those who fight for our country, who may well pay the ultimate price for the liberties we're afforded. As faithful Catholics, we recognize that there is more to freedom than simply being at liberty to make our lives what we want them to be. St. John Paul II reminds us: "Freedom is not just do-ing what we can, it is doing what we ought." We become freer within ourselves and within our relationships when we choose what is right and good. When we choose sin, we become trapped in egoism - less free, not more. This Independence Day, let's continue to pursue virtue and good character and encourage others to do this same.

Monday, July 1st, Fr. Ron will have

completed his 25th year as Pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary.

Music Ministry Our music ministry is on its “Summer Hiatus”. I am very grate-ful to all those who participate in our music ministry. They help our liturgies come alive with a “joyful noise”. Although we will not have rehearsals for our 9:30 and 11:30 choirs over the summer, you can feel free to contact me to find out about get-ting involved with the choir when we resume in the Fall. Additionally, our Children’s Choir (ages 5-11) and Junior Choir (11 and up), will resume starting in September. If you are interested in getting involved you can e-mail me at [email protected]. Our Resurrection Choir sings for funerals and is open to new members. We meet a half-hour before each funeral. No pre-vious experience necessary. If you are interested in this, you can call the parish office and leave me a message, or e-mail me at [email protected]. I came across this prayer for the Summer time which I’d like to share: Father, Creator of all, thank You for summer! Thank you for the warmth of the sun and the increased daylight. Thank You for the beauty I see all around me and for the opportunity to be outside and enjoy Your creation. Thank You for the increased time I have to be with my friends and family, and for the more casual pace of the summer season. Draw me closer to You this summer. Teach me how I can pray no matter where I am or what I am doing. Warm my soul with the awareness of Your presence and light my path with Your Word and Counsel. As I enjoy Your creation, create in me a pure heart and a hunger and a thirst for You. Amen.

Be Prepared In the storms of life, we turn to God and pray that we will be spared from harm. We are also called to take the necessary precau-tions to protect the precious gift of life and to minimize damage to property. Here are a few helpful reminders:

Evacuation Shelters: If you are elderly or have special needs, please contact your coun-ty’s Emergency Management Office to pre-register prior to any storm if you will need to evacuate.

Mass Participation: All parishioners are urged to use good judgment when deciding if conditions are safe to travel to Mass. In the event that roadways are not clear and weather conditions are unsafe to travel, the faithful are reminded that the obligation to participate in the Sunday Mass does not apply when there is grave difficulty in fulfilling this obli-gation (Code of Canon Law, Canon 1248 §2).

News and Updates: If a storm threatens our area, please visit the Diocese of St. Peters-burg website for the latest updates relating to parish and school closings. Also, follow the diocesan Twitter https://twitter.com/DioStPete and Facebook https://www.facebook.com/DioStPete/ and Spirit FM 90.5 for the latest news updates.

EVIL RESIDES IN A PERSON’S HEART … NOT IN A WEAPON

Saving Grace: A Troubled School by Vivian Chas is a Chris-tian fiction novel about how one boy's love changed the evil heart of another to save a school from a mass shooting trage-dy. Written by a parishioner of the Diocese, the book was in-spired by the Florida Parkland School shooting. It tackles the issues of bullying in schools and demonstrates the power of love over evil. It is available on Amazon in both paperback and Kindle versions. Although aimed at teens and young adults, it is a good read for anyone of any age.
