PASTOR’S NOTEBOOKPASTOR’S NOTEBOOK——March 23March 23

“Ah, Jesus, fountain of life, make me drink a cup of the living water from you so that,

having tasted you, I thirst for eternity for nothing other than You!” As we enter the third week of Lent, we move from Guatemala to the Philippines, from Horeb to Jacob’s well in Samaria. It is my hope that, praying daily with the Rice Bowl, your Lenten journey may grow deep in understanding Catholic Social Teaching as lived out in our everyday lives. We are always disciples of Jesus, always learning, always seeking to imitate Christ more and more. This week our EMPOWERED! program, Financial Peace University enters its final week. The lesson is entitled, “The Great Misunderstanding.” It centers on the true meaning of Stewardship – that all is a gift from God and that we are not owners but stewards, that is, managers of all that God has gifted to us. This is a powerful lesson and I invite anyone who would want to join us throughout this week to do so. There is a class every evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Multi-purpose Room in the Parish Center. As Jesus encounters the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, there is a “great misunderstanding” on her part. Jesus, in His wisdom, helps the woman come to understanding and then faith in Him. This transforms her life and that of many of the town’s people. Can we allow this to happen to us with regard to our practice of stewardship? Can we allow Jesus to lead us into greater giving of our time, talents and treasure so as to only thirst to be more and more like Him, the greatest giver of all? Next Sunday, March 30th is Celebration Sunday! Please plan on joining our present and past graduates of FPU in giving thanks to God for all that God has done in us and through us these past 9 weeks of EMPOWERED! Festivities begin in the Downtown Church at 1:00 p.m. There will be prayer, witnessing, entertainment, food and lots of joy!

You may have missed Dean Mbuzi’s reflection last week since it was in the back of the bulletin. If so, please read it on our website. Just follow the link from the front page at www.saintmichaelparish.org. Lenten blessings to you all!

In Christ I love you, please pray for me,

P.S. Don’t forget Reconciliation every Friday in Lent from 6-7 PM before Stations of the Cross, and afterward as needed. The light is on for you!

GIVING MURALS St. Michael parishioners generously serve each other and the community in many ways. From St. Vincent de Paul to the Food Bank and The Other Bank; from Pregnancy Aid to the Community Kitchen; from Shoulder to Shoulder to Drexel House; there are many opportunities for us to share our time and financial help. By supporting these and other ministries, together we can do much good.

Are we as generous with our family, friends, and neighbors who are hurting or might need financial assistance? Have we brought a meal to a neighbor recovering from illness or surgery? Have we ever volunteered to pay the rent or electric bill for a family member who is experiencing financial difficulties? Have we ever invited a disabled parishioner to attend Mass with us? Have we ever offered to purchase groceries for a friend currently without a job? Some of us may even have the means to do a very large scale act of kindness toward another individual or family.

Praying for and comforting others is easy, but reaching out, one-on-one, and offering help can be a lot more challenging. Many of our parishioners are indeed sharing their gifts on a one-on-one basis. In this Empowered! to Serve series, we encourage everyone to give more thought to this rewarding way of living out the gospel mandate to love one another.

The Giving Murals, debuting this weekend in the Gathering Space and at the Westside, are created to reflect the generosity of our St. Michael community. Please use the stickers provided to make a brief note of the time, talent, or treasure that you or someone you know has cared enough to give, and place it on the mural. These examples of your generosity will beautify the design and create a mural of caring that will grace and inspire us. The many uses of our gifts expressed on the murals will encourage us and reaffirm our commitment to living our discipleship.

Well done good and faithful servant. Come and share in your master’s joy.

Empowered! to Serve

JUSTCARE BAGS  As you leave Mass today, friendly folks will offer you “JustCare Packages”. These are your donations to be given out to people who are without a stable home and live on the streets and in shelters. There are many ways to make sure your packages get to folks who can use them:

· Keep in your car to hand out to folks on the street or those with signs at traffic stops · Donate to: Interfaith Works Women’s Shelter – at First Christian Church - 701 Franklin St. Family Support Center – 201 Capitol Way N SideWalk – 1139 5th Ave. SE Bread and Roses – 1320 8th Ave. SE Drexel House – 604 Devoe St. SE Union Gospel Mission – 413 Franklin St. NE

JustCare packages can easily be made up at home and donated in many different ways to people who need them. Thank you for your generosity and participation in this project. Every little bit helps. “To love God and neighbor is not something abstract, but profoundly concrete: it means seeing in every person the face of the Lord to be served, to serve him concretely. And you are, dear brothers and sisters, in the face of Jesus.” (Pope Francis, Address during Visit at the Homeless Shelter “Dona Di Maria,” 5/21/13)

I think all you Empowered Kids can help Spencer this week with his latest predicament. Check out the comic on page 33 of your Family Empowered Pack or go to the parish website and hit the “Stewie Button”. Draw a great ending for this great little bug! Spencer Spender

PARISH HAPPENINGS

SAVE THE DATE!!! WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9, 1-2:30 PM Seminar on Long Term Care with Bruce Bamford in the Gathering Space. Get answers to your questions!

Dear Parishioners,

Our Lenten journey is fully underway here at St. Michael Parish School. After a festive, high-energy Mardi Gras celebration, we prayerfully transitioned to Lent through a beautiful Ash Wednesday Mass. During Lent, our school community is deeply engaged in prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Our Lenten Rice Bowls were distributed after Mass and they are designed to help students and families practice these three core aspects of Lent. The Lenten Rice Bowls contain a beautiful daily prayer and a Catholic Relief Services website with additional resources to help us celebrate this season. We are beginning each Monday of Lent with Stations of the Cross in our school gym and closing each week with a Friday Mass. We are currently looking ahead to our 2014-2015 school year and planning for another exciting year of high academic achievement and transformative faith development for our students. Please encourage your family, friends, neighbors, and fellow parishioners to contact our school office to sign up for a school tour. We are currently seeking to build enrollment in next year’s kindergarten, third and eighth grade classes.

Blessings,

Living Your Strengths at St. Michael Parish

WE ARE CREATED AND CALLED

Excerpt from ‘StrengthsQuest on the College Campus’,

Gallup StrengthsQuest™ Strengths Vocational Advising Template of Lee University

Written by Larry Braskamp

The most basic issue in vocation is to establish a listening, obedient, love relationship with God. He first calls us into relationship with Himself.

Then God calls us to become the person He created us to be and to get done what He created us to do.

When Jesus was asked to name the most important commandment, He said: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart soul, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself.” As we commit our lives to loving God and others with the abilities He has given us, the very best thing that we can ever do is to fulfill God’s purpose and plan for our lives

Do you remember when you first received the print out with your words?

What is your reaction now? What role do your talents play in answering God’s

call in your life? Do you love talking about Living Your Strengths?

You are invited to the return of Strengths Conversations every 2nd Wednesday

Beginning Wednesday, April 9, 6:30 PM, Parish Center Room 7.

Planning Ahead? …Our next Living Your

Strengths Discovery Series, autumn of 2014,

CRS Rice Bowl and the

USCCB’s Catholic Relief

Services (CRS) Collec on

During Lent, Catholics in the United States have two different opportuni es to

support the Church’s global mission to assist the poor.

What is the CRS Rice Bowl?

CRS Rice Bowl is a faith forma on program that

provides resources for use in parish and school

community se ngs, with complementary

materials for families to foster their faith life

at home.

CRS Rice Bowl offers simple, yet powerful, ways

for parishes, schools, and families to bring

Lenten spirituality to life.

By par cipa ng in the tradi onal Lenten prac-

ces of prayer, fas ng, and almsgiving through

CRS Rice Bowl, Catholics in the US are making a

posi ve difference in the lives of our brothers

and sisters who are most in need.

CRS Rice Bowl began on Ash Wednesday,

March 5, 2014 and ends with Easter Sunday,

April 20, 2014.

What is the CRS Collec on?

The CRS Collec on is one of the twelve na onal

collec ons established by the bishops of the

United States and represents our community of

faith at work in the world. The CRS Collec on

theme, Help Jesus in Disguise, reminds us of

the presence of Christ in every one of our

brothers and sisters in need.

The bishops encourage us to view the na onal

collec on in light of stewardship and sharing. It

is right and just that we give something back,

helping people in our na on and worldwide to

live be er and grow in the love of Jesus.

The na onal date for the CRS Collec on is

always Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday of

Lent. This year, it falls on the weekend of

March 29‐30, 2014. As a Stewardship Parish,

we contribute 10% of our regular collec on.

SANCTITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE

and

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

“Day of the Unborn Child”

On Tuesday, March 25th,

The Feast of the Annunciation

PLEASE COME ANY TIME FROM 9:00 PM TO Midnight TO THE ST. MICHAEL’S ST. JOSEPH’S CHAPEL

WE WILL PRAY THAT ALL PARENTS WILL CHOOSE LIFE

Why is the Feast of the

Annunciation so important

to the pro-life movement?

In recent years perceptive pro-life

parents began annual celebrations of their

children's "First Days" nine months before

their birthdays--recognizing that if every day

practices don’t reflect the reality of their

beliefs they send destructively mixed

message.

Though many of them were faithful

Christians, few of them recognized that

Christ's “first day” passed by every year with no celebration, virtually unnoticed by the majority

of believers. And this was no ordinary “first day”--this was what Christians call the Incarnation-

-the moment God became man. As the word “incarnate” (to be made flesh) implies, this was fully

accomplished not when Jesus reached adulthood, or was revealed to the world at his birth--it

happened when he took on human flesh at his conception in Mary’s womb. If the Christian

community as a whole does not consistently recognize and honor the conception and prenatal life

of Christ who is God, then it should come as no surprise that the secular world has so little

regard for the newly conceived life of an "unplanned" child, who is neither divine nor anxiously

awaited nor announced by angelic herald, but is simply unwanted, like so many others
