Second Sunday of Ordinary Time January 14th, 2018

PARISH NEWS Dear Parishioners and Friends: Tomorrow is Dr. King day, and recently I read a great book called “Kennedy and King: The President, the Pastor, and the Battle over Civil Rights” by Steven Levingston. It’s a great read and I would encourage you to read it… In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr, I thought I’d share some quotes from Dr. King…think about them… “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere…” I will not stand idly by…” “Now let us begin-now let us rededicate ourselves to the long and bitter struggle for a new world-the choice is ours...” “We have flown in the air like the birds, we have swum in the sea like the fishes, but we have not yet learned the simple act of walking the earth like brothers and sisters…” “All life is interrelated, we are caught up in an inescapable network of mutuality…” As I’ve said often from the pulpit, it is the role of the Church (the People of God- You and I) to make room in the public argument for the moral dimension. I believe this is what Dr. King struggled to do during his life. As I am writing this, a favorite quote comes to mind…what do you think of it? At the end of WWII, Albert Camus, an atheist philosopher, addressing the Dominicans in Paris said: “It may not be possible for us to create a world in which no innocent children suffer, but it is possible to create a world in which fewer innocent children suffer. And as we try to do that, if we look to Christians and don’t find help, where else will we go?” A word of thanks to the Redden Funeral Home for the Calendars that have arrived! Please take one- you will find them in the rear of the church. I would be very remiss as a Pastor if I didn’t offer a clear forewarning- this year Lent begins, as always, on Ash Wednesday, but this year Ash Wednesday is known to many of us as Valentine’s Day, Feb 14. It is for us this year a day of fast and abstinence, so I would urge you, as you make plans to celebrate with the one or ones you love, to do so on February 13th…fair warning! And just a reminder that during Lent, Baptism is celebrated only in cases of emergency. Again, Lent begins on Valentines Day and Easter is April 1st.

The Vatican II Document, Gaudium et Spes, states that it is the task of the Church to be actively, visibly, concretely involved in the protection of human dignity, the promotion of human rights, the fostering of the unity of the human family, and the provision of meaning to every dimension of secular activity. In light of that, I was excited to receive a notice from The Fordham Center on Religion and Culture of a forum planned for the evening of February 13th at 6PM entitled “Civil Religion: Road to Redemption or American Heresy?” As I asked last week, are you thinking about possibly joining the St. Vincent DePaul Society? The Church calls all men and women to holiness because Jesus does…he says be perfect just as your heavenly Father is perfect (Mt. 5:48). St. Paul says it very clearly: “This is the will of God, your holiness (1Thess4:3).” The Society calls its members to holiness; such was the intent of its founder in 1833 and such is its intent today. Please pray for peace. Father Duffell

“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” How hard it is for many, if not all, of us to listen, especially to God. Yet, Eli’s advice to Samuel in Sunday’s first reading is really advice for everyone. What may make it even more remarkable is how readily Samuel and the disciples in the Gospel respond. Initially, Samuel’s prompt response is to Eli, but only because he wasn’t yet familiar with God. We claim to know God and still we struggle to recognize God’s voice, perhaps because we are too busy talking to hear. Chances are we are all seeking something, but we miss Jesus asking us what we are looking for. We miss the opportunity to tell him and receive his reply. Let’s make an effort to quiet our minds and voices so we can listen, truly listen, and learn what God has ready for us.

Second Sunday of Ordinary Time January 14th, 2018

Padre Duffell. CATHOLIC FAMILIES GROUP Please join our Blessed Sacrament Catholic Families Group!
