ST. MARY STUDENT PARISH ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN

The end of the calendar year is approaching and with it the chance

to offer to St Mary’s an end-of-year gift that will bless both the giver

and receiver. Beginning this Sunday you may contribute a

December Gift 2014

to help us continue to offer our eight Sunday masses, confirmation

prep for 57 eighth-graders, Family Faith Formation for 250

children and their parents and 65 undergraduate catechists, 230

student and resident parishioners in 26 Small Church

Communities, baptism classes, baptisms, and other sacraments.

You will also help us to continue to support Ig.nite (70-80

undergrads attending Thursday mass, dinner and a presentation in

spiritual formation), our ten undergrad interns, weekend retreats

for undergrads, grads, and young professionals, to name only some

of our programs. These gifts comprise our Annual Fund, which

along with revenue from Sunday Collections, endowment interest

and fees, allows us to do all we do – for you, for those we serve,

and for our Creator and Lord.

******

I am pleased to announce that Fr Brian Paulson, SJ, the Provincial

of the Chicago-Detroit Province of the Society of Jesus, has

missioned Fr. John Ferone, SJ to serve as a full-time campus

minister at our parish beginning in August, 2015. Fr John will be a

wonderful and dynamic addition to our community. He is now the

Director of Catholic Campus Ministry at Miami University/Oxford,

OH. He has worked as Associate Director of Campus Ministry at

Xavier University and in other Jesuit schools. He spent six months

in Kampala, Uganda as part of a mobile medical team caring for

people with AIDS in small villages and as a weekend chaplain in

local prisons. He has also served as spiritual advisor on pilgrimages

to Croatia, Spain, Guadalupe, Rome, the Holy Land, Kenya,

Poland and the Czech Republic.

Fr John’s hobbies include, travelling, hiking, art; singing, playing

and listening to music; gardening, wildlife photography, cooking,

the quest for the perfect pizza, eating sushi, visiting zoos and

aquaria, whale watching, and reading in the fields of anthropology,

archaeology, church history, theology, philosophy, mythology,

literature, science fiction, fantasy (especially J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S.

Lewis and J.K. Rowling, Patrick Rothfuss), natural history and the

Civil War.

Fr John is also a skilled musician, singer and artist, with experience

in designing worship spaces and using visual art and music to

deepen the experience of prayer.

******

Another announcement: Frs Dennis, Dan, and I will be moving

into our new house, where Frs Michael and Eric already reside, on

December 18. This larger house will provide space for six Jesuits,

meaning all five of us including Fr John.

******

Another announcement: Fr Joe Wagner, SJ, will join us second

semester on sabbatical from his position as professor of

mathematics education at Xavier University/Cincinnati. He is

working this semester at Oregon State/Corvallis, OR. Next

semester he will work with UM faculty and spend some time with

us, presiding at Sunday masses and serving as spiritual companion

for the Busy Student Retreat, possibly leading an SCC, and so on.

******

A final announcement: In early January Fr Dan Reim will leave

on a six-month sabbatical. He will spend two months at the Jesuit

School of Theology in Berkeley, CA, studying sacramental

theology and liturgy with a Jesuit theologian. He will then study

conversational Spanish for four months in Cuernavaca, Mexico

and will return to Ann Arbor in late June.

God our Creator and Lord has blessed us in so many ways. Thank

you for your active participation in this Spirit-filled parish,

participation that helps the Spirit bring fuller and richer life to us all

and to those beyond the parish whom we serve.

Feast Day of Service

volunteers going out to 17 different sites in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti

and Flint to serve those in need. Such a great way to honor our

patron, St. Mary, on her Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Thank you to all the staff who helped make this day happen and

most importantly all the parishioners who spent Saturday putting

their faith into action!

This is a program for middle- and high-school students that teaches them about boundaries; we ask you to attend the program with your child. It should take between 60 and 75 minutes, depending on how much discussion occurs.

This December, we are embarking on a new and creative Advent journey at St. Mary’s. Members of the staff and student leaders are writing daily reflections about what inspires them as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of Christ. Our intention is to give voice to the people of God in our midst and to highlight the particular ways that God is becoming incarnate and dwelling among us right here in this parish. For this reason, we will not be offering the Advent reflection booklets that we have in the past but hope instead that you will join us on this new Advent journey.

The St. Mary Advent reflections will be posted daily on a blog that can be accessed through the website, Facebook, or Twitter. You can also sign up to receive daily text messages, daily emails or weekly emails with links to the latest posts.* You all are invited to tune in to SMSPAdvent.blogspot.com starting November 30, the first Sunday of Advent. We look forward to seeing you there!

If you have questions or comments, please contact

Abby Braun at [email protected].

* Many of the reflections will include mixed media, such as songs or videos, and as a result do not lend themselves well to hard copy. If you are looking for a printed resource for Advent, check out Sacred Space for Advent and the Christmas Season 2014-15 at Ave Maria Press (800 282-1865, ext. 1).

Lost & Found If you have misplaced items while at church, we may have them

waiting for you in the parish office. Please stop by the office to

check the Lost & Found box. All items not claimed by the last

Sunday of every month will be donated. Thank you.

Mondays at 6:15 PM Centering Prayer is a method of silent, contemplative prayer in

which thoughts and feelings are stilled as we simply seek to be with

God. It is rooted in centuries-old monastic prayer. The book Open

Heart, Open Mind by Fr. Thomas Keating, OCSO is a good

introduction. We meet Mondays at 6:15 PM. All are welcome. The

first Monday of each month is a special introductory session, during

which we listen to an audio tape that describes the method of

Centering Prayer session. Otherwise, we typically sit for two 20-

minute silent prayer sessions with a short meditative walk in

between.

Mondays at 7:00 PM Our Catholic faith teaches that God is alive in the Scriptures.

Come discover the Word with us. We practice scripture-based

faith sharing in a small discussion group. Discussions are guided

by church-approved commentaries, question guides, and the

Catechism of the Catholic Church. We meet Mondays at 7 PM.

Seeing with Eyes of the Heart (Eph 1:18)

Cultivating a Sacramental Imagination in an Age of Pornography

March 26-27, 2015 Saint Mary’s College & the University of Notre Dame

Pornography is today available and accessible to a degree unprecedented in human history, largely because of the internet. According to one estimate, 25 percent of search engine requests are for pornographic material, and a Kaiser Foundation study found that teens are exposed to internet pornography without even seeking it out. What is the effect of a pornographic visual culture on the human imagination? In the midst of this culture, how can we cultivate a sacramental imagination that beholds in male and female humankind the divine image in which we are created (Gen 1:27) and redeemed (2 Cor 3:18)? Join psychologists, theologians, iconographers, and others for an interdisciplinary exploration of these questions.

Call for Student Papers and Works of Fine Art: Proposal Deadline 01/15/2015

We invite undergraduate and graduate students to submit:

1. Proposals for theological papers that identify and develop

resources from the Catholic and Christian traditions that can contribute to the cultivation of a sacramental imagination in an era of pornography.

2. Proposals or sketches of works of fine art that express artistically

the difference between a pornographic and sacramental visual culture.
