GLORIA Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead, he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty, From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Page 2 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B

This week we return to the Gospel of Mark which will be the main source of readings through the weeks of Ordinary Time this year. Mark’s Gospel was the first of the accounts of Jesus’ ministry to be written down. It is widely accepted that it was written about 65–70AD for a community in Rome where Christians were undergoing persecution because of their faith. Because of this setting, Mark often recalls stories which give great hope to people and encourage them to stay firm in their faith in the face of opposition. In this gospel, the disciples do not make excuses or delay. They simply leave everything to follow Jesus. They are immediately drawn to the words and person of Jesus; nothing else is as important as the Kingdom of God and the One who preaches it.

• John the Baptist was arrested and ultimately killed by Herod Antipas, son of Herod the Great, who ruled over the region of Galilee. John had been highly critical of the behaviour of Antipas in marrying Herodias who was his niece and the former wife of his brother.

• The Sea of Galilee is also known as Lake Tiberias and Lake of Gennesaret. It is the largest freshwater lake in Israel, and is approximately 53 km in circumference, 21 km long and 13 km wide.

• Each gospel account of the calling of the disciples is slightly different. Compare this gospel to last week’s reading.

Greetings of peace for 2018. Our new year is underway and 2017 may seem but a distant memory, but soon the year will be in full swing with the children all back at school. I hope all you had a blessed and peaceful Christmas and New Year. My first anniversary of being your Parish Priest is only 10 days away (1st February was my official start date) and I would like to take this opportunity as we start the new year to thank you all for your wonderful support throughout the year. This was especially evident by the number of cards and gifts I received at Christmas. I have been truly blessed by your generosity and kindness. Thank you.

With a new year underway sadly I have had to make a couple of changes to our weekly prayer routine. With the friars getting older and me being the only priest actually appointed to the parish, it is quite difficult to continually ask for the support from the older friars who are incredibly generous with their time and support. So from the first week of February there will be no Mass on Tuesdays – but it will be replaced by a Liturgy of Word and Holy Communion. I will be training a few parishioners to help lead this time of prayer. The St Anthony’s devotion will continue as per normal after the Liturgy.

Let’s continue to pray for each other as we begin this new year together.

Blessings, Fr Bernie
