CELEBRATE

This Sunday, God rejoices and sings because of us. We read in Zephaniah today that God “will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at festivals” (Zephaniah 3:18). We know plenty about singing at festivals. Already our ears are ringing with the songs and carols that anticipate the Christmas season.

Paul reminds us of the source of our own double rejoicing: God is the mighty savior who is in our midst (in Zephaniah’s words). Because this is so, says Paul, we can rejoice and be at ease. We don’t have to worry, for God’s peace will stand guard over our hearts and minds.

A medieval carol depicts Christmas as “my dancing day” and urges us to enter into the dance. Why all the merrymaking? Be-cause “the Lord is near,” as Paul reminds us (Philippians 4:5). He then points to another reason for the dancing: the dawn of the promise of peace, the peace beyond all understanding, that is now within our grasp. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

HOLY YEAR OF MERCY

“A Time to Heal, to Help, to Forgive”

December 8, 2015—November 20, 2016

What is a Jubilee year?

Celebrating a jubilee every 50 years was an ancient Hebrew custom (see Leviticus 25: 8-13). It was a year of rest and restoration, when captives were set free, debts were paid, and land was not sown or harvested.

In the 1300s, the Catholic Church adopted the tradition of proclaiming a jubilee every 50 years to encourage people to return to a life of holiness. By the 1400s, a jubilee was proclaimed every 25 years so each generation could participate in the celebration. Our last “ordinary” Jubilee took place during the year 2000, marking the second millennial anniversary of Christ’s birth. But there is also a Catholic tradition of proclaiming an “extraordinary jubilee” outside the 25-year cycle. Our last “extraordinary jubilees” were held in 1933 and 1983, marking the 1900th and the 1950th anniversaries of Christ’s death and resurrection.

What Will Happen?

On December 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception and the 50th anniversary of the close of the Second Vatican Council, Pope Francis opened a Holy Door in St. Peter’s Basilica that remains sealed except during jubi-lee years. When he crossed the threshold, this door became a “Door of mercy”. In the weeks that follow, Holy Doors will be opened by cardinals and bishops in basilicas, cathedrals, and Shrines all over the world.

Check out our Giving tree! Take a tag and donate, to help make Christmas a special time of year for a little boy or girl who may not get any

gifts otherwise.

Gifts should be returned to the church office, unwrapped, by Thursday the 17th.

Thank you for your generosity!!

CELEBRA
