Sedimentary RocksHow They are Made
• Wind and water break down the earth• Bits of earth settle in lakes and rivers• Layers are formed and build up• Pressure and time turn the layers to rock

Shale is a Sedimentary RockShale
Shale rocks are sedimentary rocks which were formed from clay that is compacted together by pressure.

Limestone is a Sedimentary RockLimestone
Limestone is a sedimentary rock which was formed from the mineral calcite which came from seas and lakes that dried up and from sea animal shells.
![Page 10: Third Grade Rocks ! A study of three different kinds of rocks Created by: Denise T. Cox, Corley Elementary School, Lawrenceville, GA](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052618/551bddd0550346b9588b5c20/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Limestone is used in concrete.

Igneous RocksWhat are They?
• Fire Rocks• Formed underground by trapped, cooled
magma• Formed above ground when volcanoes
erupt and magma cools

Granite is an Igneous RockGranite
Granite rocks are igneous rocks which were formed by slowly cooling pockets of magma that were trapped beneath the earth's surface.
![Page 17: Third Grade Rocks ! A study of three different kinds of rocks Created by: Denise T. Cox, Corley Elementary School, Lawrenceville, GA](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052618/551bddd0550346b9588b5c20/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Granite is used for buildings. Georgia’s capitol is made of Georgia
granite.

Stone Mountain is made of granite.

Pumice is an Igneous RockPumice
Pumice rocks are igneous rocks which were formed when lava cooled quickly above ground. This rock is so light, that many pumice rocks will actually float in water.
![Page 21: Third Grade Rocks ! A study of three different kinds of rocks Created by: Denise T. Cox, Corley Elementary School, Lawrenceville, GA](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052618/551bddd0550346b9588b5c20/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Because this rock is so light, it is often used as a decorative landscape stone.

Ground to a powder, it is used as an abrasive in polish compounds and in Lava© soap.

What are metamorphic rocks?
![Page 25: Third Grade Rocks ! A study of three different kinds of rocks Created by: Denise T. Cox, Corley Elementary School, Lawrenceville, GA](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052618/551bddd0550346b9588b5c20/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Metamorphic RocksWhat are They?
• Rocks that have changed• They were once igneous or sedimentary• Pressure and heat changed the rocks
![Page 26: Third Grade Rocks ! A study of three different kinds of rocks Created by: Denise T. Cox, Corley Elementary School, Lawrenceville, GA](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052618/551bddd0550346b9588b5c20/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)

Marble is a metamorphic rock that is formed when limestone is changed.

Marble comes in many colors.

Slate is a metamorphic rockSlate
Slate is a metamorphic rock that is formed when shale had low heat and a little pressure on it.
![Page 32: Third Grade Rocks ! A study of three different kinds of rocks Created by: Denise T. Cox, Corley Elementary School, Lawrenceville, GA](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052618/551bddd0550346b9588b5c20/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Slate can be any color but is mostly found in gray or black. When it is broken, it splits into layers.
![Page 33: Third Grade Rocks ! A study of three different kinds of rocks Created by: Denise T. Cox, Corley Elementary School, Lawrenceville, GA](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022052618/551bddd0550346b9588b5c20/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
Slate is used to make roofs on houses.

Slate is used for stepping stones and floors.

Click on the rocks for a fun activity. You will test some rocks to see if they
float and find some other information about them.
