third annual tom mchale memorial to benefit sports legacy...
TRANSCRIPT
SLI is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2007 by Dr. Robert Cantu and Christopher Nowinski. SLI
is dedicated to solving the concussion crisis in sports and the military through medical research, treatment,
education and prevention.
SLI partnered with Boston University School of Medicine in September in 2008, to form the Center for the Study
of Traumatic Encephalopathy (BU CSTE), where we maintain the world’s largest Chronic Traumatic
Encephalopathy (CTE) Brain Bank.
While supporting the BU CSTE and the quest to find a treatment for CTE, SLI now works to translate our new
knowledge into programs that will allow sports to be played more safely and protect future generations of
athletes.

The BU CSTE is able to conduct pathological research thanks to tissue donations from benevolent families.
These families understand that this research will help protect millions of other athletes both today and in
the future, as well as accelerate the search for a cure for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).
We are forever thankful to the families that continue to put their trust in SLI and the BU CSTE. Without their
selfless contributions, SLI would have never made progress toward discovery.
Here are just a few of the amazing individuals with Chicago connections who have helped move our
research forward:

To protect our young athletes locally, SLI launched the Chicago Concussion Coalition (CCC) in 2011, which now
represents a network of 50+ national athletic, health and social service organizations united under a common
mission to work in partnership with coalition members to provide student athletes in greater Chicago with the
best resources available to protect them from sports related concussions and recurring injuries. Co-chaired by
Rob Johnson of CBS and Dr. Len Messner, the CCC has provided concussion education and training to every
Chicago Public Schools coach, nurse, and physical education teacher, and provides free concussion education
for children through service chapters at DePaul University and the Illinois College of Optometry.

At the Inaugural Chicago Concussion Coalition Dinner, we will be honoring Jim McMahon, the
legendary former quarterback. As a member of the legendary Super Bowl XX champion
Chicago Bears, the 14 year NFL veteran won two Super Bowls and while at BYU was a two time
All-American. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.
Jim McMahon is being recognized for his efforts to raise awareness of the effects of
concussions and CTE. McMahon has bravely shared his story with the public through
numerous media interviews, revealing problems with memory loss, headaches and day to day
living. His willingness to open up about his struggles with the long-term effects of concussions
has helped fight the stigma of neurological disorders, inspiring other athletes to seek help.
