DESCRIPTION

Thinking The Edge – Water & Culture was born as a result of the previous successes of Thinking The Edge Milano 2010 and Water Front Hong Kong 2011. Istanbul provides the perfect setting for an architectural event that explored the dynamic relations between water and culture, exemplified by an ever changing, multicultural society and its beloved Bosphorus. Thinking The Edge – Water & Culture events included: workshops attended by students from twelve universities all over the world, seminars and round tables chaired by prominent representatives of the architectural and interdisciplinary fields, as well as an exhibition. The event provided a forum and opportunity to meet a variety of well-renowned architects fromTurkey and from abroad. Thinking The Edge - Water & Culture focused on the notion of the border as a dynamic interchange between reality, materials, cultures, identities and memories. Among the themes proposed, projecting at different scales -both urban and architectonical- has

why the edge?PAOLO BELLONI

“The Edge is the place where things

happen, where archi tecture and urban

planning need to solve impor tant

conf l icts, where the ci ty presents

i ts problemat ic and interest ing

dinamism. The edge is the border

of the ci ty related with the growth of

the per i fery. The edge is the border

of the ci ty wi th the water. The edge

between inside and outside has been

the most interest ing f ie ld of work of

the moderni ty. The edge between

cul tures…”

No picture is perhaps more symbol ic

and iconographic to represent Istanbul

as Michelangelo’s Creat ion of Adam in

the f resco of the Sist ine Chapel. Two

hands outstretched towards each other

extending the f ingers wi thout touching.

The tension of two bodies, two cul tures

so di fferent one from the other, in wich

the secret of creat ion and the pr inciple

of spinning in constant mot ion reside.

We can immediately understand that

the power of th is image is in the

distance. In the empty space between

one f inger and the other, in th is void,

in th is absence, in th is Edge things

happen and take place.

Thinking the Edge is one of the

potent ia l ly most interest ing and

strategic workshops on the stage of

internat ional educat ional research .

Istanbul, which hosted i ts second

edi t ion, and which we hope wi l l

a lso host the th i rd in 2014, is one

of the per fect metropol i tan areas in

the wor ld to embody this theme so

relevant and also able to provide

food for thought, having always

been a place of geopol i t ics which

has always exper iences in i ts shape

Thinking The Edge-Water& Culture

2013 was a meet ing between nine

internat ionals universi t ies, professors

and students f rom more than six

di fferent countr ies, in Istanbul in July

2013.

TTE was more than a research, studio

and discussion about the idea of

the l imi t , was more than a group of

professionals and students designing

a project in an area of Istanbul.

TTE was the oppor tuni ty of these

professionals and students f rom

di fferent cul tures and countr ies to be

in contact dur ing eight days, shar ing

not only archi tectural ideas, but also

exper iences, ways of work, ways of

l iv ing.

The present moment in global

communicat ion, “Global izat ion”,

in which al l of us are connected

by internet, somet imes we forget

something very impor tant, the direct

contact between us.

Probably th is can be one of the most

impor tant point of TTE. Dur ing those

days we had the oppor tuni ty to feel

th is global izat ion in f i rst person.

TTE is the chance for the students

to have direct contact wi th

professionals, wi th the real hear t of

archi tecture, and for the professionals

to have contact wi th young people,

br inging fresh and sometimes

revolut ionary ideas, which tomorrow

wi l l be proact ive professionals.

Al l th is providing the oppor tuni ty to

create an internat ional networking

between al l of us.

We aim to give the possibi l i ty

to archi tects and students

of archi tectures to l ive these

exper iences dur ing TTE 2014!

and structure the idea of working

t i re lessly on the l imi t .

I bel ieve that focusing on the

meaning and value of borders

and l imi ts, of the places between

things, is l ike t ry ing to invest igate

that physical and symbol ic space

unstable, but necessary, which tel ls

the contemporary real i ty and i ts

radical t ransformat ion.

The world is changing dramat ical ly

before our eyes , and the

internat ional cr is is is nothing

more than one of i ts most extreme

consequences, but i t is a lso to

be considered as a t remendous

oppor tuni ty to change and evolve the

tools wi th which we think and work.

Dedicat ing a ser ies of internat ional

workshops that combine some of the

schools of archi tecture, as wel l as

br i l l iant th inkers and designers, is a

great oppor tuni ty for us al l to devote

t ime and resources to one of the

big issues facing the contemporary

v is ions and solut ions.

In a general ized dimension in which

the relat ionships between publ ic

and pr ivate, internal and external ,

mater ia l and digi ta l , ar t i f ic ia l and

natural , are mingl ing and changing,

archi tecture is one of those

discipl ines in which real i ty wi l l ra ise

more quest ions and unusual issues.

For th is reason Thinking the Edge

is an impor tant exper ience to carry

on and Istanbul is one of the ideal

c i t ies to develop i t . In 2013, the

workshop was a unique oppor tuni ty

to f ind each other and work together,

despite the very l imi ted t ime, and the

f i rst resul ts, as wel l as oppor tuni t ies

for direct exchange, have been

very encouraging. I t was only the

beginning of a journey and i t wi l l be

the task of the next edi t ions to dig

even deeper and offer useful themes

and vis ions .

My contr ibut ion, a long with Anja

Vis in i , was to t ry to turn the

workshop, i ts contents and projects,

in a story easi ly communicated

through social networks, wi th the

opening of Facebook and Twit ter

channels. This was as wel l one of

the many possible strategies to work

on the l imi t and, together, to share

the resul ts wi th a growing mass of

people coming to bui ld a community

unimaginable unt i l a few years ago.

This is another way to explore the

tools and the future potent ia l i ty of

archi tecture and look forward as

Thinking as the Edge is cont inuing

to do.

Celebrated for the f i rst year on the

shores of the Bosporus, the eight days

internat ional workshop “Thinking The

Edge” proposed a ref lect ion on the use

of publ ic space as the main value of

the urban fabr ic.

The workshop promoted by Paolo

Bel loni , professor in landscape

archi tecture and design of publ ic

space at the Polytechnic of Mi lan and

Ana Hidalgo, archi tect f rom Madrid

who l ives in Istanbul s ince 2011, saw

the par t ic ipat ion of four schools of

Archi tecture of Istanbul and facul t ies

f rom many internat ional universi t ies.

Professors and students f rom Columbia

Universi ty, ETSAM Madrid, ETSAB

Barcelona, IAAC Barcelona, Mimar

Sinan Universi ty, Istanbul Technical

Universi ty İTÜ, Kadir Has Universi ty

and Bi lgi Universi ty met to discuss

the project of the edge of the ci ty wi th

par t icular reference to the water front

The demonstrat ions and incidents that

happened between the beginning of

June and throughout the whole month

of July have affected a s igni f icant

por t ion of the ci ty in the project areas

for Taksim Square.

Despite of th is facts the organizers

have not dishear tened from the wi l l of

taking the dramat ic s i tuat ion as the

main demonstrat ion of the impor tance

of publ ic space to the l i fe and ident i ty

of a ci ty. The demonstrat ions underl ine the

strong symbol ic, real and social

values of the publ ic space that is the

hear t and the soul of the ci ty.

Ten days of act iv i t ies dur ing the f i rst

week of July, 6 round tables at tended

by a total of about th i r ty professors

and archi tects of internat ional

interest and 35 students div ided

into 5 working groups each one

led by a teacher and a tutor of the

par t ic ipat ing universi t ies. These are

the numbers that have given r ise

to an impor tant stage of research

and debate which is a fur ther

demonstrat ion of what Istanbul has

become and wi l l be more so in the

coming years, a f ie ld test and a

reference point for the archi tectural

and urban debate as wel l as they

were in the ‘80s and ‘90s Barcelona,

Par is, Ber l in, Amsterdam and other

European ci t ies.

In Istanbul, the s ize of the ci ty,

the densi ty of the layers of h istory

and cul ture, for the immense l ine

of water front that character izes the

design of publ ic space as an engine

for the generat ion of a new image of

the ci ty has the potent ia l to assume

an even strong ident i ty.

The topic for th is second edi t ion of

THINKING THE EDGE has been the

water front as a condit ion extended

to the whole ci ty, in terms of urban,

man-made and natural environment

wi th i ts potent ia l i t ies, and for the

overal l urban qual i ty of the ci ty.

THINKING THE EDGE focused i ts

at tent ion not only in archi tecture

and urbanism to inf i l t rate other

realms, wi th the aim to br ing in

a mult idiscipl inary approach to

the subject under discussion and

open the academic invest igat ion

Architecture is created for each city, situation, political moment, with different speeds and velocities. It’s not good to wait a perfect thing in the future, [in a small scale] a lot of problems can be solved in this present moment. Eduard Bru

they presented the impor tance of

the water front in the development of

the ci ty f rom Mimar Sinan Mosques

and infrastructures to the most

recent projects and compet i t ions

that animate the contemporary

archi tectonic and urban debate in

the ci ty. Istanbul is a ci ty histor ical ly

placed “on the edge”: the boundary

between East and West, between

Europe and Asia, between land and

water. Istanbul, a lways a crossroad

for cul tures and people, a ci ty that

has been bui l t in close relat ion to the

water and with the di fferent waters

that draw i ts structure: the mighty

waters of the Bosphorus, always

crossed by the dense network of

streams of merchants f rom the Nor th

Horn, a t rue “square on the water”

which is the reference point for the

urban fabr ic of the histor ic distr icts

of the ci ty, the water of the power ful

hydraul ic structure that feeds the

ci ty, i ts c isterns and aqueducts;

exper t ly interpreted in the work

of Mimar Sinan. Istanbul is also a

modern ci ty that in recent years, and

in cont inui ty wi th the history and

tradi t ion of the ci ty, has produced

projects f rom local archi tects of

renowned fame for the redesign of

the immense water front of a ci ty that

has the s ize of a nat ion.

Many contests and projects in

recent years have animated the

debate of archi tecture and urban

planning in Istanbul. These two

sides of the ci ty, the histor ic and the

modern, were presented by Luca

The topographical dimension, as

The qual i ty of the ci ty is based on two

On the one hand the size of the

The workshop act iv i ty was the real

soul of Thinking The Edge with the

par t ic ipat ion of students coming from

the di fferent Internat ional and Turkish

universi t ies. Each group worked

around a le i tmot iv as reference to

invest igate di fferent nuances in the

renewal of an impor tant par t of the

ci ty wi th special at tent ion to i ts open

space.

GROUP 1

“Blurr ing the edge” developed under

the direct ion of Hayr iye Esbah, Yüksel

Demir, Meltem Erdem proposed to

improve some of the def ic iencies

of Istanbul on the str ip next to the

shorel ine. Blurr ing the edge aims at

resolv ing cer tain problems paying

at tent ion to di fferent points of

interest , the topography, the t raff ic

infrastructure and the water front.

The idea of the project is to

create ser ies of intervent ions that

enhance mobi l i ty and provide better

connect ions to the water, proposing

the workshopPAOLO BELLONI

37

strategies that involve users and

designers. Fol lowing these ideas,

the project focuses on three areas:

the f ishermen bay, Karaköy ar t isans

distr ict and the Galata por t project.

The Galata por t intervent ion

foresees establ ishing a point of

connect ion between land and sea.

After analysing the area, the group

proposes the creat ion of a publ ic

f loat ing plat form that can br ing the

people next to the water generat ing

recreat ional spaces that can over look

the see, but also the ci ty. The

ar t isans distr ict intervent ion seeks

the real isat ion of di fferent act ions

that can give answers to di fferent

col lect ives: fami l ies, students,

professionals and homeless. The

strategy to fo l low consists on

creat ing a ci ty lab reachable f rom

al l the neighbourhood that can

work as a meet ing point where the

di fferent col lect ives can interact. The

connect ions between the lab and

the rest of the neighbourhood would

be done through a sof t intervent ion

of pavements that can guide people

to the ci ty lab. The f ishermen bay

intervent ion goal consists on creat ing

better connect ions inside the

neighbourhood al lowing i ts dwel lers

to more easi ly reach the di fferent

act iv i t ies that take place in i t : spaces

for social is ing, bazar, product ion

spaces, manufactur ing spaces and

sea l i fe. The strategy to fo l low is

to create a set of urban solut ions

(sur faces, plat forms, shel ters, f rames,

structures and volumes) that can be

spread in the area responding to the

di fferent s i tuat ions.

G R O U P 2

Blanca Lleó and Juan Elv i ra proposed

to their students to work on the topic

“A Rooftop Network” to let the water

reach for and through the present

urban fabr ic of Istanbul up to i ts

older, natural borders to meet wi th

the ci t izens of a ci ty unable to touch

perhaps i ts most valuable asset,

reshaping the shorel ine based on

the needs of today and opening up

much needed space for publ ic and

pedestr ian use where i t might be most

appreciated. A l imi t is set for the cars

as the ground and f i rst f loor of the

enormous car park are emptied for

pedestr ians. A few careful ly chosen

bui ldings give way to a histor ical

mosque r ight at the histor ic sea l ine

and the water comes up to those

borders, wi th a l ight br idge where

i t seems necessary, careful not

to cut the cont inui ty of the water.

The Rooftop Project, belonging to

the Radical Surgery Program, aims

to create a network of punctual

solut ions to Istanbul ’s urban and

archi tectural problems in Karaköy

area. The program’s main object ive,

based on a mult i layer analysis of the

s i te, is the creat ion of a network of

publ ic spaces in the dense urban

t issue of Karaköy, emphasis ing the

relat ion between the ci ty and i ts

water front. The new network wi l l

mainly take advantage of the unused

rooftops of the area and the ver t ical

voids between speci f ic bui ldings.

The project wi l l introduce fresh air

and new l i fe in the chaot ic and busy

Istanbul.

G R O U P 3

Fred Levrat f rom Columbia Universi ty

wi th the suppor t of Jose María

Domínguez def ined their work “Urban

St i tching” proposing a project on

connect ions between the di fferent

urban uni ts of the area of work,

enhancing the roles of the di fferent

publ ic spaces in the metropol is by

providing a greater cohesion.

The project aims at improving the

qual i ty of the open spaces on the

shorel ine creat ing spaces to walk,

spaces to stay, spaces to f ish and

spaces related to the bui ldings,

al l of them having a character ist ic

pavement that ident i f ies the di fferent

41

Page 42: Thinking The Edge - Water and Culture - Istanbul 2013 - FINAL REPORT

uses and the di fferent connect ing

spaces throughout the area.

As wel l , the project foresees opening

cer tain closed spaces turning

the area into a more permeable

neighbourhood connect ing the

ci ty to the water front through three

new connect ing spaces. These

connect ing spaces wi l l eradicate the

concept ion of barr ier between the

ci ty and the sea that many people

have. In addit ion, the project intends

to create some infrastructure to

assist the di fferent publ ic spaces

creat ing a cer tain ident i ty throughout

are: bars, retai l , integrat ion of o ld

bui ldings, etc.

G R O U P 4

Paolo Bel loni wi th Mariona Benain

and Francisco Rodriguez proposed to

their students to work on the concept

of “Urban Carpet ing”. The ci ty

and the area of study do not have a

unique structure. Where the urban

fabr ic of the Galata Hi l l arr ives to the

water, there, a lot of di fferent th ings

happen. And the ci ty, the streets,

the bui ldings, the monuments, the

infrastructures adapt themselves to

the par t icular i ty of the place.

The given answer to improve these

spaces is publ ic space as space

of connect ion between si tuat ions

and as a space that express the

soul of a ci ty. Relat ing to one of the

most known tradi t ions of Turkish

cul ture and with the r ichness of

stone mater ia ls di ffused in the ent i re

ci ty, Urban Carpet ing propose to

work at the scale of detai l of the

di fferent s i tuat ions. A new f loor, a

new pavement is connect ing al l the

areas and on this f loor the strategy

of the carpet al lows to underl ine the

character of each place and give

mater ia l consistence and qual i ty at

the human scale percept ion.

The carpets have thickness and can

be excavated or extruded: Ground

zero carpets, f loat ing carpets, f ly ing

carpets and ver t ical carpets. The

huge l inear area has been div ided

in four main par ts, each one with a

speci f ic character and ident i ty and

have a basic background mater ia l

that can be the Marmara Marble ( the

Marble! Marm-ara Marmol Marmo

Marble Màrble) or a Basal t stone,

the dark one coming from the black

see or the grey one coming from

Anatol ia, and then a r ich var iety of

stones, woods, grasses and waters

can character ize each place with

the design of the detai ls to make

every place ful ly f requented without

renouncing to the imper fect ion and

var iety of the ci ty.

G R O U P 5

Final ly Eduard Bru and Jordi Safont-

Tr ia worked on the concept “Smal l

act ions, big impacts”.

The exercise is focused on the

understanding of the exist ing urban

condit ions of the ancient Galata

neighbourhood and i ts relat ionships

wi th the water front. The edge has

been worked not as a l ine, but as

state. Galata’s associat ion wi th

the water is i ts reason to exist :

a watchtower over looking the

ar t iculat ion between the Bosphorus

and the Golden Horn.

To regenerate such a dense and

large distr ict is very complex.

Instead of t ry ing to solve general

problems with a master plan, the

group proposed to act on speci f ic

points throughout the area that

al low the thinking of concrete

intervent ions.

The proposal locates speci f ic points

wi th the potent ia l to be transformed

with one act ion, establ ishing new

scenar ios by rethinking the pre-

exist ing. I t is crucial to detect areas

able to induce a t ransformat ion of the

whole distr ict .

The group def ined six points

as examples of how concrete

intervent ions can provoke big

impacts on the neighbourhood.

45

Page 46: Thinking The Edge - Water and Culture - Istanbul 2013 - FINAL REPORT

1, Galata Square: Demol ishing just

one bui lding creates a large square

related to the histor ical tower of

Galata, generat ing a new reference

open space

2, In the area besides Istanbul

Modern with the presence of many

scattered parks, mosques and

isolated fountains separated by traff ic

and parking lots the group proposed

to undergrounding a segment of

Kemeral t i Avenue for cars and a

new underground garage, a new

cul tural park relates the ci ty wi th the

water front.

3, Karaköy Hub: The ar t iculat ion

between Galata Br idge and the

neighbourhood is interpreted as an

intermodal place where ci t izens can

access and cross easi ly.

4, In Tersane Street by tear ing down

few bui ldings adjacent to the exist ing

mosque, i t is possible to create a new

open space that ar t iculates the main

coastal street wi th the shorel ine.

5, Sea Hammam: The possibi l i ty

of reducing and relocat ing the

exist ing ferry bui lding provides the

oppor tuni ty to create a new plaza

open to the sea with new uses lost in

the area such as the sea hammams

(bathing pools) .

6, Secret l i f t : The discovery of a

hidden street can provide faster

connect ions and new act iv i t ies on the

publ ic space.

The sum of th is f ive di fferent

approaches and the interact ion

wi th the round tables al lows

an explorat ion on the dynamic

relat ions between water and

cul ture, exempl i f ied by an ever

changing, mult icul tural society

and i ts beloved Bosphorus.

They al lowed an over look to the

border as a dynamic interchange

between real i ty, mater ia ls, cul tures,

ident i t ies and memories. Among

the themes proposed, project ing

at di fferent scales, both urban

and archi tectonical , has been the

prominent issue, together wi th

the relat ion to Istanbul water front,

intended as the most interest ing

and chal lenging generator of design

oppor tuni t ies for the construct ion of

an urban environment in relat ion to

the new real i t ies of the contemporary

Istanbul. The relat ionship between

nature and ar t i f ice, pre-existence

and transformat ion, h istor ical

her i tage and innovat ion were some

of the main themes of the research

developed dur ing Thinking the Edge

IDO İstanbul Deniz Otobüsleri Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. was founded in 1987 in Istanbul by the Greater Metropolitan Council for the purpose of promoting sea transport and helping to ease traffic jams. Istanbul’s sea transport was largely carried out by Turkish Maritime Operations City Lines before 1987. In that year, İstanbul Ulaşım and Ticaret A.Ş. (Istanbul Transport and Trade Ltd) was founded by the Greater Metropolitan Council, bringing a second marine transportation organization into existence. Later in 1988 the organization underwent a title change, becoming IDO - İstanbul Deniz Otobüsleri Sanayi ve Ticaret (Istanbul Sea Buses Industry and Commerce), Ltd. Sea crossings are an important transportation alternative in Istanbul, since it is surrounded by water. With the traffic getting more chaotic by the day in Istanbul, you will be saving time every day you ride the sea buses, which have a history that goes back 22 years.IDO is introducing new routes to meet increased demand and is slashing prices even more with the aim of providing cheaper travel for Istanbul residents. Hopes are rising that, with capacity utilization increasing by the day, prices will soon be competitive with other transport alternatives. By combining human services with technology, Istanbul Sea Buses is advancing quickly and resolutely towards a brighter future. In February 2005, the Greater Istanbul Metropolitan Council expressed its desire to take over Türkiye Şehir Hatları İşletmesi by submitting a protocol to the High Board of Privatization (HBP). The takeover operations were carried out by IDO on behalf of the Greater Istanbul Metropolitan Council. Following the takeover, the Greater Istanbul Metropolitan Council became the sole authority responsible for marine transportation in Istanbul and this responsibility was largely transferred to IDO. In June 2011, IDO was privatized and started to be steered by Tepe-Akfen-Souter-Sera Joint Venture management. In the Project Finance Awards 2011, which organized by Euromoney, the privatization of IDO has been granted the award of “European Transport Privatization Deal of the Year.”
