Amsterdam, man-made island.
The Concept – A Journey
Remoteness
The lacking of a sense of belonging, isolated physically and mentally.
Love PrevailsEven when the deceased are gone, their family and friend’s love for them never changes.
Death cannot kill what never dies – Love.
Sense of Belonging
Finding the pathway ‘home’, went through isolation, but yet finding hope and a sense of belonging.
Tragedy unite nations
Uniting the people heart to heart, to gather courage to move on, knowing their deceased will rest in peace.

Spatial Poetics
Black boxes of isolation
This is as if it imitates the souls of the deceased, in isolation and remoteness when they crashed and
scattered across a large area.
Their bodies took time to fly back from a far area, a remote distance from the crash site back to our
country.
Boxes can be explored if wished to, basically an dark empty space.

Spatial Poetics
Returning homeIt is as if the soul of the passengers have finally
return home all the way from Ukraine.
Skylight towards the end of the building signifies the presence of hope, even in despair.
The three decks at the end of the building points to 3 different views; Amsterdam, Malaysia and
Australia, the main nationality on board.
Even though you may not physically see Amsterdam, but the direction gives a sense of
closeness, that you’re heading the right direction home.

Encapsulating Love
As visitors enter the two massive wall structure, everything within it is reflected.
The walls are made of polished granite with each and every name of the individuals on
board written on it.
Nature within the reflective walls, encapsulating love, honours remembrance and respect each and every individual life.

Spatial Poetics
The WindmillsVisitors will get to fold their own windmills, the
symbolic icon of Holland.
Filled with wishes, condolences or regrets, these windmills will be placed beside the stream, in the
direction towards the tulips. When the wind blows, it spins. This has a meaning of sending thoughts to
the deceased through the help of the wind.
As a platform to seek peace and comfort for the family members.
Involves the community, to be a part no matter if you’re directly or indirectly involved.
Well wishes
Spatial Poetics
Sea bed of tulipsThrough this tragedy, people become more united
in the midst of mourning.
Orange, being the colour of celebration and unity in Amsterdam.
Each tulip writes the names of the deceased, scattered in the field of 293 tulips, each
representing each one of them.
80 smaller tulips are being placed, to remember the children on board.
