Bandido’sbandidoscafe.com159 _ E. Franklin St., Chapel Hill967-5048Also in downtown Hillsborough and Woodcroft in Durham
This Mexican café and family restaurant has become a locals favorite in downtown Chapel Hill. Take the stairs down into Amber Alley to visit the original location, and for Tony’s refreshing take on the genre, including Margarita Chicken, the Queso Tejano Burrito and, of course, El Gigante – the big-gest burrito in the Triangle. Enjoy as well the many vegetarian and low-fat selections. Come and taste for why the locals have voted this their favorite Mexican restaurant in Orange County in 2011 and why Bandido’s dominates all the local salsa competitions with their multiple award-winning salsa! Eat here once and you’ll be a fan for life.

Carmine’scarmineschapelhill.com1800 E. Franklin St., Eastgate, Chapel Hill929-4300
Tucked away in a quiet corner of Eastgate Shopping Center, Carmine’s strives to be an “old school’ Italian eatery, complete with a rich ambience of color and tradition in the dining room and outdoor patio seating. Included in the Carmine’s authentic experience is the use of San Marzano tomatoes from near Mt. Vesuvius – not acidic like the Roma variety thus requiring no additives for superior flavor. Pizza dough is made fresh daily, and all meats and vegetables are fresh and, when available, purchased locally. Carmine’s uses imported Italian pasta to create their dishes such as the house spe-cialty, Pasta Antonia. Come enjoy the southern Italian approach to authentic Italian food. Open every day; delivery available.

Kids eat free from the kids menu until 5 p.m. on the weekends, and UNC students always get 10 percent off with a valid One Card.
