EMPLOYERS AND SOCIAL MEDIA

“They come in all buttoned up, their clothing is meticulous, they spend years building this resume, and this person that’s sitting there is almost entirely different than the person posting on these Web sites.”

Tim DeMello, owner of Ziggs, an internet company

When asked if he searches online profiles when he is hiring, he replied, “Of course. Everybody does.”

Page 22: Think Before You Post

EMPLOYERS & SOCIAL MEDIA CONT.

About 20 percent of companies are secretly searching online profiles before even interviewing applicants

Many employers admit they’ve learned how to access profiles students think are “private”

Pictures create an “online footprint” which could be linked to your name and career for the rest of your life

Page 24: Think Before You Post

Social networking sites do not require verification; false information can be posted about you

One person with a grudge against you could potentially change how your employer looks at you

SAFETY!

Crimes involving Facebook are up significantly

Sexual offences, threats, bullying, hate crimes, fraud & theft

People do not exercise the same caution online as they do in person

The internet provides:

Sense of anonymity

False sense of security because of lack of physical interaction

Users tailor information for friends forgetting others may see it

All of this may threaten your personal safety

Page 34: Think Before You Post

SPAMMERS & STALKERS

Criminals can use information you willing provide about yourself to gain your trust

Birthday, current city, hobbies, interests

This information can also be used to guess passwords

And stalkers will really appreciate your help if you post your daily routine and whereabouts online!

The more information you post the easier it is for you to be taken advantage of.

NONA BELOMESOFF -18YEARS OLD

Met Christopher Dannewig on Facebook. The twenty-year old claimed to be an animal rescue worker and said his employers were hiring.Belomesoff was a dedicated animal lover and expressed interest in a job. He told her that the first part of her training included an overnight camping trip. With him. In a secluded area. Most of us would have alarm bells going off by this point, Belomesoff decided to go along with it. Her body was found in a creek a few days later.

New Albany, Indiana – Keri McMullen wrote a status update mentioning that she and her boyfriend would be at a concert until late. The couple came home from the concert and found that their home had been burglarized, with about $10,000 worth of equipment and jewelry missing.

The robbers were caught on the video system that McMullen and boyfriend Kurt Pendleton had installed the week before. She realized that one of the robbers looked familiar. He had friended her the week before, claiming to be an old neighbor from 20 years ago.

Chapman was convicted of raping two prostitutes at knifepoint and sentenced to seven years in prison. He was a suspect in six other sexual assaults, none of the cases ever went to trial. He remained a free man until September of 2009, when he was arrested due to a minor traffic offense. However, when the police took him in for questioning, the interrogation took a morbid turn.

Ashleigh Hall -17 – lived near Durham, England. Like most of her peers, she spent a lot of time on the computer, mostly on Facebook. And like many of us, she didn’t think it too risky to meet someone she only knew online: a hunky teenage boy whose profile picture featured him tanned and shirtless. When she went to meet the young man, however, 33-year-old Peter Chapman was waiting for her. He had created the profile in order to entice young women into meeting him. He raped and strangled Ashleigh, and left her body in a nearby field. After the traffic arrest and subsequent questioning, Chapman led police to Ashleigh’s body.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF

Limit who can see what you post.

Change your settings to limit who can see what information is on your profile.

You can also block users from having any contact with you.

Even if you limit who can see your profile, there are ways others can get around these settings.

Don’t advertise to the world what you’re doing or where you live.

Limit what you post.

Don’t share things that would make you vulnerable to stalking Such as sharing your email address, physical address, phone

number , your schedule or routine)

Remember, you can’t take it back!

Page 40: Think Before You Post

THINK BEFORE YOU POST

Use your online profile as a free place to promote yourself professionally and academically.

You won’t post anything you’ll regret later, and you’ll enjoy the benefits of staying connected with friends

Just remember: What you do in your personal life reflects what you do in your professional life

You can’t live two different lives
