Things I Have Learned from ENG 110

    1. I love to write because words appeal to me. Making combinations to describe thingsbeing able to say something in a unique way is something I love to do. And while I knew

that before, I didnt realize the actual reason for why I love writing, I just assumed it was

because of the opportunity to be creative.

    2. Writing processes are obviously different for everyone, but there isnt a right or wrongway to write a paper. Ive learned so much about my peers writing processs that areextremely different from mine, such as one student who starts with an intro, writes the

rest of the paper, and prints without making any changes. When I wrote a research paper,

which is out of my comfort zone, I used a different writing process than usual and learnedthat there are multiple processes that can be successful for me.

    3. Its really important to read something more than once. Any time we read an essay fromthe book, I read it two or three times because I knew that I needed to understand the

writers process and purpose in addition to just reading for comprehension. That alsohelped in my other courses because reading each time for a different purpose allowed me

to reflect on what I was reading instead of easily forgetting the subject.

    4. First drafts shouldnt be perfect! Thats how the professionals do it, so why should we putso much pressure on our first try? Ive learned how to be content with turning in

something unfinished in order to get the best feedback and new perspectives and in themean time, do some more brainstorming.

    5. There is a difference between revising and editing. And most teachers or professors startgrading a paper using editing rather than revising, such as grammar or format. But Ive

learned that having a paper revised for your ideas, fluency, and content is more importantthan conventions, at least for the first few drafts. I also learned that as honors students,

our tendency is to edit peers papers rather than revise them because we know we cancorrect spelling and MLA format but suggesting ideas or criticizing them can seem

    intrusive.

    6. Reading and writing are deeply related. More than just the obvious, that they use wordsand involve stories, Ive learned that the way we learned to read and our reading

preferences influence the way we write and whether or not we enjoy it. And at the same

time, how we tend to write and our fondness of it impacts what we read or even if weread at all.

    7. All writing is autobiography. No matter what you write, if YOU are the one writing it,your piece will reveal something about you. Therefore, put yourself into your writing so

that your readers not only understand your essay but also a part of you.

    8. Dont use commas before because. Why? Its tacky and we hate it. Just kiddingthe realreason is that theyre unnecessary and weve been taught so many different things on thesubject, but ultimately theyre not needed.

    9. Identity crises are very important. And I discovered that not only is writing a giant part ofmy identity, but its a giant part of keeping my identity. If I dont write, my feelings andfrustrations get really crazy really fast. Having the opportunity to do some metacognition

is really important, and Ive surprised myself with how much I enjoy thinking about my

thinking.10.Theres no reason not to attend class. When Im having a stressful day and I dont want to

do any work, this class gives me the opportunity to write and escape instead of just

sitting in class and feeling more weighted down. It seems easy to give into thetemptation of taking a nap to handle some stress, but ironically going to class to write has

    fixed it!
