15th. “Breaking the Image of Cultural Stereotypes: Community Forums/Diversity Training”

In honor of Mexico’s Independence Day, we will be having a community forum to discuss the many stereotypes, myths, and misconceptions surrounding Latin American cultures, how to educate others, and practical ways to foster a welcoming environment.

16th. “Misa Rociera”

Please join us for our 11th annual” Misa Rociera” at Incarnation Catholic Church. We invite you to wear your country’s typical regional attire. We will process behind the “Virgen del Rocio” while the “Coro Rociero” of incarnation sings: “La Salve Rociera” The choir will wear Spanish costumes and will play the following instruments: guitar, pandereta, castañuelas, flauta, piano and clapping hands. Mayor’s Hispanic Heritage Committee. Lissette Campos, Director of Community Affairs for ABC Action News, will be the keynote speaker of this year’s celebration, which showcases the impact of the Hispanic culture in our community. 13th. “Latinos y el Cancer”

Moffitt Cancer Center will host the fourth biennial “Latinos y el Cáncer” Educational Symposium. This free event will be conducted entirely in Spanish.The educational symposium is designed to provide cancer education and resources to the local Hispanic community. 13th. “500 Years of Eating in Florida” by Prof. Gary Mormino”

13th. Taller de Comunicación entre Padres y Adolescentes sobre Salud y Conductas de Riesgo

Parents and teens will participate in engaging discussions about health and risky behaviors, through small group settings. Topics will include: dating violence, drugs, alcohol, nutrition, physical activity, sex, etc. The parents’ workshop will be in Spanish and the teens’ workshops will be in English. Teens will be with other Latino teens and parents with other Latino parents, and during the day both groups of parents and teens will join to practice some of the skills that they learned in their individual sessions. Workshops are lead by well trained community facilitators. As part of the project, teens and parents will answer questions in a computer, before and after the workshop, and we will pay them $50 for questionnaire that they complete. 16th. “Afro-Cubans and the Civil Rights Movement in Tampa: A Tribute to Francisco A. Rodriguez”

This event, presented by the Hon. EJ Salcines, will review the life of Tampa native and civil rights attorney Francisco Rodriguez, unheralded defender of minorities in civil rights cases across Florida during the peak of the Jim Crow era.

19th. Florida’s Hispanic Heritage Conference Plenary Session, "Latin America and Florida: Today and Tomorrow"

Introduction by Dr. Ralph Wilcox, USF Provost and Senior Vice-President. This panel of distinguished speakers will explore the rich connections between Florida and Latin America. Share your Hispanic heritage and the story of your life by recording a conversation or interview with a family member, friend or other person whose stories you would like to hear. Each oral history will be preserved and shared with others in a collection of stories celebrating Florida’s cultural diversity. The teacher training workshop will include 100 teachers from Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, and Polk Counties. The teachers will represent all grade levels (K-12) and will fully participate in both days of the academic conference prior to the workshop. The conference content will be connected to the teacher training workshop and will reflect the five conference themes. 20th. Florida’s Hispanic Heritage Oral History Project

Share your Hispanic heritage and the story of your life by recording a conversation or interview with a family member, friend or other person whose stories you would like to hear. Each oral history will be preserved and shared with others in a collection of stories celebrating Florida’s cultural diversity. 27th. National Hispanic Scientist of the Year

Since 2001, Tampa’s Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) has honored a National Hispanic Scientist of the Year. The recipients of this prestigious award have represented a variety of scientific fields and accomplishments and have been from many different Hispanic heritages. The one thing they have all shared is the tremendous impact they have made in the lives of Tampa’s Hispanic Youth. The National Hispanic Scientist of the Year Award recognizes outstanding Hispanic scientists who promote a greater public understanding of science and encourage Hispanic youths’ interests in science. Proceeds from the event benefit MOSI’s YES! Team (Youth Enriched by Science) program. This year MOSI honors Dr. Nora D. Volkow, Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) as their National Hispanic Scientist of the Year. She was born in Mexico and has served as the Director of NIDA since 2003. Dr. Volkow’s work has been instrumental in demonstrating that drug addiction is a disease of the human brain.

13 “Taller de Comunicación entre Padres y Adolescentes sobre Salud y Conductas de Riesgo”

Padres y adolescentes participarán en los debates sobre salud y conductas de riesgo, a través de grupos pequeños. Los temas incluyen: violencia en el noviazgo, las drogas, el alcohol, la nutrición, la actividad física, el sexo, etc. El taller de los padres será en español y el de los adolescentes en Inglés. Los adolescentes estarán con otros adolescentes latinos y sus padres con otros padres latinos, y durante el día los dos grupos de padres y adolescentes se unirán para practicar algunas de las habilidades aprendidas en sus sesiones individuales. Los talleres son dirigidos por facilitadores comunitarios bien capacitados. Comparta su herencia hispana y la historia de su vida mediante la grabación de una conversación o entrevista con un familiar, amigo u otra persona cuyas historias le gustaría escuchar. Cada historia oral será preservada y compartida con otros en una colección de historias que celebran la diversidad cultural de la Florida. 20 “Teacher Training Workshop”

El taller de capacitación docente incluirá 100 docentes de Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, y los condados de Polk. Los maestros van a representar a todos los niveles de grado (K-12) y participarán plenamente durante los dos días de la conferencia académica antes del taller. El contenido de la conferencia se conectará con el taller de formación de docentes y reflejará los cinco temas de la conferencia. 27 “National Hispanic Scientist of the Year”

Desde el año 2001, el Museo de Tampa de Ciencia e Industria (MOSI) ha honrado a un Científico Nacional Hispano del Año. Los destinatarios de este prestigioso premio han representado una gran variedad de campos científicos de diferentes orgeínes hispanos. Lo único que tienen en común es el tremendo impacto que han hecho en las vidas de los jóvenes hispanos de Tampa. El Científico Nacional Hispano del Año reconoce a destacados científicos hispanos que promueven una mayor comprensión de la ciencia y fomentan el interés de los jóvenes hispanos en la ciencia. Los ingresos del evento benefician al programa de MOSI YES! (Juventud Enriquecida por la Ciencia). Este año MOSI honra a la Dra. Nora D. Volkow, directora del Instituto Nacional sobre el Abuso de Drogas (NIDA) como Científica Nacional Hispana del Año. Ella nació en México y se ha desempeñado como Directora del NIDA desde el año 2003. El trabajo de la Dra. Volkow ha sido instrumental en la demostración de que la drogadicción es una enfermedad del cerebro humano.
