Sunday Forum Schedule for February

February 2 – 2020 Budget Presentation. As our congregation begins another year of ministry, we will review the proposed budget for 2020. Our treasurer, Emma Carpenter, will share how we are doing and where we are headed in the upcoming year. Come, learn, and ask your questions. February 9 – Origins of Islam. Where and when did Islam start, and how? Stewart Herman, who taught some of the world religions at Concordia College in Moorhead, will present high-lights from the history of Islam, featuring the life of Muhammad and the amazing expansion of this faith. Where possible, the talk will be illustrated with pictures he has taken from his travels in the Middle East.

February 16 – Faith Sexism and Justice, Part 1. The new ELCA social statement Faith, Sexism and Justice was approved last summer at the Church-wide Assembly, at which Nick Tangen was a Voting Member. He will share his thoughts on this important document of the ELCA and how it might connect with the youth and young adults in the church today. This is a first of two conversations regarding this social statement. February 23 – Faith, Sexism and Justice Part 2. Sexism continues in our world and church today, after 100 years of women’s suffrage, by taking new forms. Prof. Mary Lowe will return to Hope to lead a conversation drawing from the recent ELCA Social Statement, Faith, Sexism and Justice. She is Associate Professor of Religion at Augsburg University and was on the committee that drafted this document. March 1 – Ecosong. Tim Gustafson and U of M colleagues Mark Pedelty and Bob Poch will offer a multimedia presentation about their Ecosong project, a series of community partnerships aimed at environmental stewardship via songwriting, science, and award-winning videos. Note: Sunday Forum programs begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. (and conclude at 10:20). All are welcome. Bring your coffee cup and come. The Forum planning committee is eager to receive suggestions for program themes and possible presenters.

Families Moving ForwardFAMILIES MOVING FORWARD will be at Hope beginning Sunday evening February 16, 2020 through Sunday morning February 23, 2020. There are lots of opportunities to prepare for our guests and welcome them. These include set up and tear down of the rooms that will be their homes for the week, shopping for lunches and breakfast items, preparing and serving the evening meal, hosting children’s evening activities, and over-night hosting. How can you help with this important mission? Sign up at the Welcome Center. Peace! —Gretchen Peik

Worship Notes and Night Songs 2020

Join us on Thursday evening, February 13th at 7:00pm for the return of Night Songs! This special program bridges music, poetry, and cosmic imagery in a 60-minute experience that is beautiful and transporting. Musical selections will include anthems from Hope Choir, anthems from a combined choir of guests and friends from the neighborhood, instrumental and piano music, music from a string quartet of University students, and songs sung by University a cappella group VocalU. James Flaten will transform our sanctuary into a wondrous viewing chamber for the night sky projected into the rafters. A mammoth screen installed especially for this event guides the audience through images of space in tandem with the music and poetry. This year's Night Songs program focuses thematically around climate justice and the role that we as individuals play in the grand scheme of the cosmos. The event is free and open to all. Pew seating is available, or guests are invited to bring pillows and blankets to lay on the floor in the front of the sanctuary to take in the program that way. A freewill offering collection will benefit Minnesota Interfaith Power & Light (MNIPL), a campaign to mobilize a religious response to climate change. Don't miss this special event, and invite many friends to join you! You'll have lots to talk about afterward. On February 5th, we will gather for Holden Evening Prayer. This service is part of a wide network of communities praying this special liturgy on the same day. This event is called Holden Evening Prayer Around the World. The service is at 7pm in the Chapel. Drop-In Choir returns in 2020 on February 23. This opportunity is for anyone who likes to sing. Gather with us at 9:30am in the chapel for rehearsal of an easily learned anthem for the 10:30 service. Drop-In Choir doesn't participate in the processional or wear robes - we just gather to sing for the offering and then disperse. Any and all are welcome. Please note that we will be launching a new schedule on Ministry Scheduler Pro this month. The current schedule runs through the last Sunday of the month. The new schedule will carry us from March through May. Take this opportunity to update your preferences and availability on your profile if you are a worship volunteer. You will also be prompted via email. If you would like to be signed up as a new volunteer for any worship role, please contact me ([email protected])! And finally, the season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on the 26th of this month. Our worship pattern intensifies during this season of reflection and prayer. On Ash Wednesday, we worship at Noon and 7pm. Each Wednesday thereafter until Holy Week, we continue the pattern of Noon and 7pm worship, with a simple soup lunch offered after the noon service. Holy Week is the first full week of April, and Easter Sunday is on April 12 this year. I hope you can join us for these extra opportunities to gather and worship the One at our center.
