Pastor’s ColumnPastor’s ColumnPastor’s Column

January 5/6 Dear Friends,

The Feast of the Epiphany is often called Little Christmas and in many parts of the world it is a bigger celebration than Christmas Day. It carries the magic of the star and the mysterious kings who come to pay homage to the newborn king. But it also marks a certain valuable reality: even though Christmas day is past and the lights and carols have left stores, towns, and radio stations — Christmas is not over.

If Christmas means that God is born into the world, then Christmas cannot be a one- day event. God is too big and too important for that. Christmas has to be a beginning. At this time of year I often think of a wonderful poem written by Dr. Howard Thurman. Thurman, a noted theologian and civil rights activist, managed to capture the spirit of Christmas and remind us why we stand on the side of love throughout the year:

When the song of the angels is stilled, When the star in the sky is gone, When the kings and princes are home, When the shepherds are back with their flock, The work of Christmas begins:

To find the lost, To heal the broken, To feed the hungry, To release the prisoner, To rebuild the nations, To bring peace among brothers, To make music in the heart.

I hope your Christmas was wonderful. I hope more than that, too. I hope your Christmas is just beginning!

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Mike Vetrano

Divorce and Remarriage: Where Do I Stand with the Church? Beginning Again... This evening will be given by Fr. Mike Vetrano. He is our pastor and also an advocate at the tribunal in our diocese. Advocates help those seeking annulments to bring their case before the tribunal in a pastorally sensitive and compassionate manner. This evening is geared for those who wonder about where they or a friend or a family member stand with the church and will explain the various options open to those who were married in the church and now wish to begin a new relationship with the full blessing of the church.

Monday February 4th at 7:30 PM Why Catholics Like Einstein and Need not be Afraid of Darwin

The supposed conflict between science and religion is a staple of modern discourse. But does this conflict really exist? We shall take a look at Darwin's theory of evolution and the question of human origins; modern cosmology; the Galileo affair (which history books still treat as the definitive parting of ways between science and religion); and suggest ways of reading the creation account in the Book of Genesis. The talk will take a cue from the 17th century philosopher Francis Bacon: A little science can lead us away from God, while a fuller understanding of it leads us back again.

Mark Your Calendars :: Parish Lenten Mission with Msgr. Jim Vlaun, Fr. Mike Vetrano, and Father John Sureau on March 11-13, 2013 A Break from the Madness (March or otherwise!): Finding the Joy, Hope, and the Peace of God's Love Amidst Life's Turbulent Times It was the Jesuit theologian Pierre Teilhard de Chardin who reminded us that Joy is the

infallible sign of the presence of God! Our mission this year will focus on how

Christians can find that joy, even in the difficulties and struggles of life. Joy, Hope, and

Peace can not only bring us happiness but is also the foundation for the ministries of the

church. St. Francis told his followers to Preach the gospel always! Use words only if

necessary! He understood that the gifts of the spiritual life are meant to be shared!

Plan to be with us for this Lenten mission.

Knights of Columbus Corner Southampton Council #1967

The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest lay Catholic, family-service organization. It was founded in Connecticut in 1882 on four principles: Charity, Unity, Fraternity & Patriotism. Locally, Knights of Columbus Council #1967 serves the parishes of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and Our Lady of Poland. The group donates to both churches, the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and many other local charities. For more information on the Knights of Columbus and how to join please call 287-3545.

Keeping Our History As we celebrate the first year of the dedication of SHJM as a basilica I invite every-

one to take a trip into their attics and photo albums! We would like to compile a his-

tory of our parish through stories, pictures, news clippings, announcements, and even

video. If you have and memorable images or reminders from our history please

share them with us. You may dedicate them to our archive or simply have us copy

and return the item to you. Who knows! Maybe you have a old movie clip that will

remind us all of part of SHJM history. For information contact Fr. Mike or Gina Ar-

resta at the rectory.

Census 2013 — An excellent beginning With our Christmas mailing this year I sent every registered family a census update

request. Almost 300 or about 20% of these forms have been returned. Many have

taken the opportunity to update their family information, adding new phone numbers

and email addresses. In this day of electronic communication it is faster, more effi-

cient, and economical to communicate in this way. Thanks to all who have taken the

time to send back their parish census. If you would like to become a member of Sa-

cred Hearts Parish — Just fill out the census form on the opposite page. Remember

too that we welcome you to register even if you are only at Sacred Hearts for part of

the year. Registering will enable us to keep you up to date on all that is happening

here.

OUR LADY OF THE HAMPTONS The administration, faculty and student community of Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional Catholic School offers best wishes and sincere prayers of gratitude to all the parishioners who are so supportive of our Catholic school! We are proud to be a vibrant and strong presence for Catholic education on the East End! Happy New Year to all!

The anticipated opening of the gymnasium space of the new Wellness center at OLH is scheduled for the first of the New Year. This project has been a lengthy project during which the encouragement and financial support of the community has been evident. The school is still seeking funding in order to complete the classroom section of the facility, in the hope that those rooms can be used in September 2013.

Catholic Schools Week will be observed from January 25-February 3 at OLH. The opening social event will be the Family Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, January 27 featuring a full hot breakfast from 8AM-Noon. Tours of the school will be available as well as an initial welcome to the new Wellness Center. We invite everyone to come for breakfast and a special opportunity to see the school.

Registration for the 2-13-2014 school year will be held during then month of January.. Parents who may be interested in considering pre-school at St. Rosalie’s campus, or kindergarten through grade 8 at the Southampton campus are urged to request information packets as soon as possible. Tours and interviews will be scheduled for January.

We invite parishioners and friends to learn more about Our Lady of the Hamptons by visiting the website www.olh.org.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

CONFIRMATION DATE: MAY 9, 2012 4:30 PM Bishop Nelson Perez

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE REGISTERED AT SACRED HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY. REGISTRATION FORMS ARE AVAILABLE BY CALLING THE PARISH OFFICE AT 283-0097. Parents of children who will be entering first grade in September: If your child is entering the first grade and you want him/her to receive the sacraments in the parish, it is time to register them for the Religious Education Program if they are not attending Our Lady of the Hamptons or some other Catholic School. Religious Education Registration forms are now available on the parish website: www.shjmbasilica.org. Please remember that children are required to attend each year from first to eighth grades, in order to be prepared for the receiving of Confirmation in the eighth grade. Also attendance each week is a must unless the child is sick or has a good reason for missing a class. Please encourage the school and coaches not to schedule games or practices on Wednesday afternoon or evening or Sunday mornings. It is up to all of us to encourage the importance of Religious Education in our community. Please check the website for meetings and Announcements. For more information please call

By Juan J. Sosa, Pbro., from Liturgia y Canción 2013© 2012, OCP.
