Welcome to the 2015 PerthTruck and Trailer Show. WAis a giant State, covering anarea of more than 2.5 millionsquare kilometres — making

it bigger than many countries. Borderedon the west by ocean and the east bydesert, West Australians live in a Statethat depends on its road infrastructureand transporters to keep us connected.

In many ways it is the commercialvehicle industry that is the lifeblood ofWA. Without it, many of our majorindustries — including mining, agriculture, livestock and construction —would struggle.

The WA commercial vehicle industrykeeps more than 105,000 heavy vehicles onthe road ensuring that more than 20 billion tonne kilometres aretransported a year. The industry employsmore than 8000 people and ensures theefficient operation of the transport, warehousing and logistics sector, whichcontributes $11 billion to gross Stateprofit.

The biennial Perth Truck and TrailerShow is presented by the CommercialVehicle Industry Association WA, part ofthe Motor Trade Association of WA.

The show is a significant event for WAindustry and gives truck enthusiasts inour State the opportunity to see the latestproducts, including stock from interstateand around the world. As always, we have received strong support across thetransport industry and are extremely

pleased to be presenting the biggest showyet.

The 2015 show will once again fill all sixpavilions of the Perth Convention andExhibition Centre. Visitors to the eventwill see massive displays of new products, with floor stock valued at $50 million.

In a first this year, there is even morevalue for Friday’s show visitors — a seriesof industry information seminars. Theseseminars are open to the public andincluded in the price of admission but besure to reserve your seat as space islimited.

Make the most of this opportunity to seea comprehensive showcase of small andbig trucks, trailers, navigationalequipment and accessories all under theone roof. There will also be attractions forthe whole family with historic truckdisplays, loads of model trucks and thebiggest ever Kids Fun Zone.

I would like to take this opportunity tothank the volunteer committee, sponsorsand exhibitors for making this landmarkindustry event possible and to welcomethose who have travelled across States andoceans to take part.

Next weekend is going to be big — I’llsee you there!

Australia’s biggest trailer builderis MaxiTrans and the group willdisplay all its brands here thisyear. You will see innovationssuch as the easy-secure

curtainsider and tipping units from its twospecialist tipper builders, Hamelex Whiteand Lusty EMS. Freighter is its biggestbrand, and production is now starting tocatch up with strong demand.

Southern Cross Transport Equipment isanother Victorian-based builder and hassigned a local dealership with acomprehensive inventory of trailer spares.

Krueger and Lucar are both at the show, following successful results at theBrisbane event.

Howard Porter has been around formore than 75 years and knows the WAmarket better than most. Locally owned, apart from an unsuccessful interlude inthe 90s when an overseas group owned it,its bodies are seen on anything from lightcommercial utes to heavy-duty specialistunits such as mine-site service rigs. Astock of ready-built bodies and equipmentmeans many of Perth’s commercialvehicle dealers have Howard Porter’snumber on their speed dials.

We will also see Lombardi’s activetrailer displays, with the FaymonvilleTeleMAX 48-metre extendible unit, andprobably the biggest display at theshow, the triple belly dump setfrom Toll Holdings. Also ondisplay for the first time willbe a specialist Faymonvilleconcrete panel in-loader. Theunit runs the rear wheels inan outrigger format, whichstraddles a frame holding thepanels upright. Hydraulicspick up the frame, it’s cartedto the job site, and the frameis either unloaded or parkedas close to the constructionsite as possible. Multipleframes means the trailer canbe on the road most of the

time rather than waiting for craneavailability on site.

Family business Baileys Body Builderskicked off in 1989 building trailers forManganese transport from WoodieWoodie. The business now designs andbuilds tilt-trays, grain tippers, flat topsand tandem and tri-axle dollies in afacility south of Perth. The secondgeneration Baileys, who were bothapprenticed in the business, haveimplemented CNC machines to sharpentolerances and maximise quality.

Bruce Rock Engineering is another localoutfit based in — you guessed it — BruceRock. BRE has built some of the biggestside-tipping trains in WA — Kalari, Boraland Brookdale Contractors are allcustomers.

York Transport started in Victoria in1985 but is now owned by giant Indiangroup Tata. Factories in India, China (two)and Singapore supply components andcastings for trailers and trailer equipmentfor the group. A service and sales facilityin Melbourne backs up the distribution forAustralian customers.

Trailers all shapes, sizesProduction is finally starting to catch up with the strong demand for trailer building in WA

Everything fromlight-commercialutes to heavy-dutyspecialist units suchas mine-site servicerigs will be ondisplay.

WA has a whisker under 11 percent of the Australianpopulation but 33 per cent ofthe country’s land mass. With the thinnest population

density in the country — currently oneperson per square kilometre — it’s nowonder the WA truck market is biggerthan its population would suggest.

The combination of huge distances, diverse population centres and relativeisolation from the other States meanstrucks are an absolute necessity inkeeping us all comfortable in food, fuel, other essential consumables anddiscretionary items.

Local businesses that support thetransport industry are to be found in mostareas of truck equipment and services.

If you need a specialist body on yourtruck, it can be built here in WA. If youneed emergency or heavy equipmentservice modules, they can be designed andbuilt locally.

Trailers are fabricated and assembled

here, and major reconditioning and repair services are based here. WesTrac’s workshop is a greatexample of localised capability.

I toured the facility early last year and watched millingmachines repairing CATengine blocks, a processthat would normally bedone in the factory oforigin.

The company has atraining section that is asgood as any in the country— and better than most.

It produces young peoplewho are regularly runningcomplete refurbishmentjobs on some of the State’sbiggest mining equipment, and it feeds big numbers ofnewly qualified trades peopleinto the maintenance servicessector, especially in the north-westof the State.

The aftermarket for truck driversis bulging with electronic systemsfor navigation and efficiency.

New satellite tracking softwareprovides terrain-specific data to

help identify surroundings, rather thanjust a picture of a map.

Many big manufacturers now have theirown Telematics systems available whenyou order a new truck and most have beendeveloped in Europe where fleetsroutinely operate and manage thousandsof trucks in around-the-clock operations.

But local operators who are notplanning on fleet upgrades anytime sooncan select from a number of retrofitsystems that plug into a vehicle’s datanetwork and report back to base on engineand transmission state.

Tracking and managing fuel efficiency

has never been easier. A key benefit is themapping of driver style and performance.Even the most cursory driver-trainingprogram has been proved conclusively tosave a minimum of 2 per cent in fuelexpense, so it makes sense to help driverssharpen their style and habits.

To get the fuel efficiency/driver-trainingissue in perspective, it’s worth askingyourself how much your last fuel bill wasand what is 2 per cent of that?

Hella will display a wide range of theLED technology lighting solutionsavailable to operators. Driving lights andlight bars, including safety daylights willbe on show, along with signal lighting withmulti-function and multi-volt features.

On-ground lighting products will also beon display, including hand-held worklamps and full workshop arrays.

Using combinations of the GPS satellitesystem and mobile phone coverage, electronic data packages for truckoperations have never been socomprehensive and immediate.

The speed with which the programs arebeing taken up by new truck buyersindicates a strong trend in the market forthe benefits of this technology, soretrofitting smart boxes is going to donothing but increase.

Most show visitors will have watchedsome of the dramatic YouTube footagefrom dash cams, especially thosehighlighting maniacal truck drivers fromEuropean countries.

So there’ll be plenty of camera optionsavailable at the show, from the latestdash-cam recorders to rear-visionassistance, side scanning and complete

The biggest news in clean airfor truck diesel engines isthe stalled implementationof the Euro 6 regulations inAustralia. The standard is

now running in Europe and themajor manufacturers already have afew years’ experience with enginesthat meet the stringentrequirements.

But the Australian start date isstill to be determined. The latestinformation is the governmentdepartment responsible forassessing the cost versus benefit ofmaking Euro 6 law, is criticallyunderstaffed, has lots of other thingsthat seem to be easier to manage andhas simply shelved the reports.

Meanwhile, truck enginedesigners have steamed ahead, bringing engine environmentalimpacts down to staggeringly lowlevels.

The process started in 1992 withEuro I, and last changed in 2009 tothe current Euro 5 standard. Euro 6takes an engine that already cleansthe air around it, and halves thesoot, reducing nitrous oxides by afurther 80 per cent.

Smoke is gone.Scania has all-Euro 6 trucks at the

show and most of the major brandshave the engineering already inplace, waiting for the bureaucrats.

Some of our major fleets havealready opted for Euro 6 with theirmost recent fleet purchases.

The price premium is notaltogether prohibitive, and the“green” image is a powerful one.

It’s a tribute to the engineers thatthe new standard has been achievedwith largely no negative impact onfuel economy.

Perth Truck Modellers will be atthe show once again, with around90 model trucks all built withmeticulous attention to detail —most even adorned in company

livery. There are around 15 members ofthis club, yet the fruits of their hobbyalways draws big crowds at the events theyare invited to.

Dion Chambers will debut a Scaniatriple road train in South-West Expresscolours, along with two spectacularKenworths made from the ground up forcustomers.

At the last show in 2013, one of the mostpopular displays for the general publicwas the model truck area just outside thedoors. The only problem was getting a spotwhere you could see the action, as all themodel trucks were operated on a modelindustrial site on the ground.

This year the organisers have built araised platform viewing area so manymore visitors can watch the incredibledetail of WA’s best radio-controlled modeltrucks in action.

A model gravel pit, with fullyfunctioning loading equipment andgantries, along with a road systemsurrounding it makes the display evenmore realistic.

What’s a fast turnaround for atrailer delivery these days?No matter how skilled or fityou are, you’ve still got tocrank the legs down (or up).

On the WA Bos Semi-Trailer Equipmentstand, you’ll see the air-operated trailer-leg system.

Available as a retro-fit to existingtrailers, the legs are operated from therig’s air supply and engage a piston andlocking pin with a single-button control.

The legs raise or lower in five seconds.Jost has an electronic system that takes

a different approach. It runs off a batterythat is trickle-charged from the trailerlights system, so it can be used when thetrailer is separated from the prime mover.

There’s a manual over-ride if power islost for some reason.

MMT Mining Services is the localdistributor for the ISRI seat range.

Adopted as standard fitting in Isuzu

trucks for more than five years now, anISRI seat is renowned for its active thigh, lumbar and side support.

My last test drive was in a heavy-dutycurtainsider which was empty. Everybump in the road said “load me, load me,”as the front suspension transmitted theimpact directly to the cab.

But the ISRI seat stayed largely at thesame level, insulating me from road shockand helping keep hands on the wheel.

Turntables and tow hitches are theaction points in trailer operations, and themajor suppliers are all here.

Jost, SAF Holland and other supplierswill display time-tested solutions to safetrailer operations, particularly B-doubleand road-train work, such as electronictrailer-braking systems which help toprevent roll-overs.

Truck parts feature strongly in thisyear’s event. The constant drive for costefficiencies has increased demand for

recycled and third-party spares, so muchso that major brands such asIsuzu now make available non-genuineparts for certain products through itsdealer network.

Added to that is the increased level ofequipment used in cabs, on exteriors andin the load spaces.

Wheels, seats, bullbars, communicationsequipment, transmissions and a widerange of lighting options and LEDsolutions will be on display.

Lubricants are constantly evolving tocut down parasitic friction losses and allthe major providers will be on show.

Central tyre-inflation systems arerecognised as an effective way to maintainoptimal tyre pressures for durability andfuel efficiency.

You can see those at the show and modelthe cost/benefit solution for youroperation.
