Fasts and Feasts “Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia!” This glad exclamation recurs in worship throughout this season of Easter, to remind us that we dedicate a whole fifty days to especially celebrate Christ’s triumph over death and hell. And it makes a small but obvious con- trast with Lent, when we refrain from singing or saying “Alleluia” (or the more Hebrew-like “Hallelujah”) in wor- ship. This is one of my favorite things about worship in our Lutheran tradition--that we have a calendar of seasons with different words and actions. Easter doesn’t pop out of nowhere and then vanish. We build up to it deliberately, then bask in it for a while. This year I noticed the absence of the alleluias more than I usually do. I pray the psalms out loud, three or so at a time, each morning, and toward the end of Lent I reached the part of the psalter that has a lot of hallelujahs. Thinking back to when I stud- ied these things, I seemed to remember that you’re supposed to say the word in your head rather than just skip it. At the monthly meeting of our conference churches in March, I did the same thing during one of the praise songs (not all Lutherans are as picky about seasonal worship as I am, I admit). The word happens, it’s there, but you withhold your voice. It’s not a big thing, and not something even I lose any sleep over. But it’s a good thing to experience absence followed by abundance. In Christian practice we talk about this as fasting and feast- ing. We refrain from things--even good things!-- to learn a little better how we should love them, and even long for them. It’s impossible to give our attention to everything at every time, or to ex- perience every moment in a life of faith at once. So we have some methods to give different things and different moments their due. We strip the altar as Jesus is symbolically taken into captivity on Maundy Thursday. We kneel at the cross as Jesus dies on Good Friday. We bring candles into the dark, tomb-like sanctuary on Holy Saturday as we begin the Easter Vigil. And now, in this season of joy and redemption, we sing our happiest songs and hang our brightest decorations. St. John Chrysostom, the fourth century bishop of Constantinople, phrased the celebration perfectly in his Paschal Homily, which is still read in Ortho-dox churches each year: “First and last alike receive your reward; rich and poor, rejoice together! Sober and slothful, celebrate the day! You that have kept the fast, and you that have not, rejoice today for the Table is richly laden!” So come and be part of this season, however much or little you prepared for it. Everything from our readings to our prayers and songs brings us back to the freedom of God’s gift in Christ, for which we have all longed in our own ways. See you in church! Pastor Ben

"Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church is a community of Christians seeking to welcome and connect everyone, make disciples of everyone, and share Jesus' love everywhere. You're welcome here if you're single, married, widowed or divorced; gay or straight; male or female. You are welcome here if you have more bills than you can handle, and welcome if you have more money than you know what to do with. You're welcome here wherever you went to school, whatever you learned (or didn't learn), whatever language you speak, wherever you're from, and however you get around. You're welcome here if you grew up Lutheran or if you don't know what a Lutheran is. People who have mixed feel-ings about religion are very welcome here, as are people who have no idea why anyone would go to church, who are here to make their relatives happy, or who turned onto the wrong "Old Rand Road" from Highway 12. You're wel-come here if you never touch a drop, if you're in recovery, or if you're not quite there yet. You're welcome if you can't stand your parents or if you text them five times every day, and you're especially welcome if you do both. You're welcome here if you're angry, cheerful, confused, doubting, hurt, happy, listless, lost, wistful, yearning; right-wing, left-wing, or not into politics. You're welcome here if all you really need is to be around people. You're welcome here even if you root for the wrong sports team, are in the wrong mood, or you just want to sing. You are welcome here because God welcomes you."

Welcome

Council Highlights Lisa Kelderhouse, (847)322-0381

March 1, 2016 – Messiah Council Minutes Council Members: Bob Nash, Sally Lubeno, Karen Logan, Kari Roehr, Sara Theriault, Vinnie Jordan, Gerry Lemke, Cindy Richartz, Robert Collins, Barry Polhemus, Valerie Cambell, Lisa Kelderhouse. Jo Ann Isleb shared a report from the Good Samaritan Ministry. The goal of the Good Samaritan Ministry is to reach out to those in need locally, nationally, and internationally. Their first project this year was making fleece blankets for foster children served by LSSI. They are also planning Compassion Sunday on April 24th. Compassion International is a Christian child development and child advocacy ministry dedicated to helping over 1.7 million chil-dren in need worldwide. On Compassion Sunday members will have the opportunity to sponsor a child. The Good Sa-maritan ministry also has many other projects throughout the year. Unrelated to Good Samaritan, Jo Ann suggested that someone should create a board with pictures of council members that can hang in the Gathering Place. Kim Kroes asked council for permission to raise money for an upcoming trip to Phantom Ranch. She would like to have a fundraiser four evenings in April at different area restaurants. Motion passed to approve the fundraiser. Karen Holmes informed council that the Voice publisher has cancelled our publication as of next June, due to lack of advertisements. Other options would be to contact another publishing company, create an in-house newsletter that is shorter without pictures, or to create an emailed newsletter. Council discussed the various options. Council mem-bers will research different alternatives. Also, the church will send out a survey asking church members their feel-ings on the topic. Karen also discussed a portrait directory. The last directory was in 2011. There will be no cost to the church. How-ever, it does involve a great deal of time and effort. At the moment there isn’t anyone who would like to lead the project. Bob shared the ELCA communications. He told about the ELCA’s 40 Days of Giving Campaign. In 2016, ELCA World Hunger is extending an invitation to our congregations: Lift up the life-changing work of ELCA World Hunger through new levels of giving - spiritually, intellectually and financially - starting with Lent. Beginning Sunday, Feb. 7, and ex-tending through the season of Lent, congregations across the ELCA will join together to raise $2 million to benefit the ministries of ELCA World Hunger. This support will enable crucial work to get underway and help us kick-start the year. Gerry shared the treasurer’s report. For the month of February we are $7,000 under budget and $9,000 under budget for the year. We are ahead of last year by $2,300. There is a furnace in the preschool wing that will be replaced; however it will be paid for from other funds. Treasurer’s report was approved. Pastor Ben shared a written report. He shared that we welcomed two guest preachers in February, Mike Busch from Love INC and Rev. Joseph Chu from Lutheran Disaster Response. Todd Wright has started a five-week series in Adult Forum on world religions, sharing some powerful ideas and valuable information. In April, Eric Schaefer has offered to lead a series on the Letters of Paul the Apostle. The Christian Basics small groups started in February. Between the Sunday and Wednesday groups there are 17 learners and 12 sponsors (including 3 high school students). Remember to send things to Pastor Ben, JoAnn Freeman, or Karen Holmes if you want something to be shared on Facebook. And if you’re not receiving 2-3 monthly e-mails from Messiah, let Pastor Ben know. Pastor Ben has an es-say on prayer practices in Aeon magazine and a shorter item on the Christian Century blog this month.

Pastor Dawn shared a written report. She told about further intentional impact training and the ICNU model. Karen Holmes, Erica Jawnyj, and Pastor Dawn are working on campus logo consistency. MLPK has funding for their half of the project and the church will need to consider a fundraising effort for the other half. Tickets are now on sale for the Messiah Preschool and Kindergarten 40th Anniversary Gala. Disaster Beware! Is going very well. $1,182 has been raised since the project began. This is a little over a third of the way to our $3,000 goal. In addition, 25 LOVE baskets have been taken to be filled, and this week we will be adding 108 pieces to our mystery mosaic. Make sure to stop by the Disaster Beware table in the Gathering Place to donate to your favorite Disaster Avenger!

Our Preschool and Kindergarteners are thrilled to en-joy the slightly warmer temperatures that March brings, and the chance to get outside and play! This month our Preschool and Kindergarteners will begin to observe signs that winter is winding down, and spring is on the horizon. We are eager to catch sight of new plants, leaves, and green grass growing. To God give the glory for warmer weather and the elusive spring season Easter comes early this year! Our preschoolers will learn about the Resurrection of our Savior and the symbolism of the cross. He is Risen! He is Risen in-deed! Have you gotten your tickets? We hope that you can join us at our 40th Anniversary Fundraising Gala on Saturday, April 16th. The event will be held at Lindy’s Landing from 7 p.m.-10 p.m. Silent and live auctions, tasting plates, live music and more. Tickets are now on sale for $45 each, $50 after March 15th. Call the main school office to reserve yours today, (847) 526-7479. We are currently enrolling students for the upcoming 2016/2017 school year. Classes are filling up quickly! Troop 90 April Newsletter We had an amazing turnout of guests for our pancake breakfast that was held on March 12th at the Moose Lodge. The scouts sold 150 tickets in advance and many more walked in. There were 30 scouts who made this annual pancake breakfast a success with 10 leaders who guided them throughout the morning. The older scouts mixed 50 pounds of pancake mix and made the pancakes along with 500 sausages. The younger scouts served the pancakes, sausage and a choice of coffee, milk, or juice. Thank you to our families, friends, members of the community, and the Wauconda Moose Lodge for your support! Troop 90 will be attending camp at the MaKaJaWan Scout Reservation during week 3 of camp, July 10-17, 2016. It promises to be a very busy week. The scouts attending have put down a deposit. New scouts will have additional time to consider this fantastic Boy Scout experience and should sign up soon! Mr. David Gasner is the Patch for summer camp. Speaking of new scouts, we welcomed 20 scouts who recently joined our troop. The Troop 90 Dungeons and Dragons is back! The second session will take place on Friday, April 29th from 5pm to 10pm. Skylar A. is organizing this event. There was a meeting held recently for the parents of the Scouts that have just crossed over to the Troop. This was a time to share some of the differences between Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and ask/answer any questions the par-ents might have. The Illinois State Beach cleanup campout begins on Friday, April 1, 2016. There will be tent camping at the state park, and we will be returning on Saturday, April 2 by 3 pm. This event costs $8 for cracker barrel, breakfast and lunch. This is a good opportunity for service hours. Our council does an annual clean-up at the Illinois State Beach in Zion. We rake up all the leaves and pine needles and pick up the debris that has collected over the winter in the campsites. This is open to all scouts and scouters. Parents who are interested in helping with the clean-up or scouts not wanting to camp out can bring a lunch and join in on the clean-up work Saturday as well. The Patches for this event are Mrs. Gaye VanDiggelen and Mr. David Antonides. Our troop along with Crew 2090 is running a Junior Olympic Archery Development program for youth in Lake Geneva, WI at Bigfoot Archers. This event will be held on Saturdays from 10:00 am-noon and costs $5.00. Any scout or crew member, girl or boy, interested should contact Scoutmaster John Nielsen through his email at [email protected]. A Grant Pilgrimage campout is scheduled for April 22-24, 2016 in Galena, IL. This is open to any boy scout who is in-terested. A Historical Trails award can be earned. Mr. David Gasner is the Patch. Yours in Scouting, Hunter Frey

I hope you all had a wonderful Holy Week and Easter! Thanks for participating in our annual Easter Egg Hunt! We had over 1000 Eggs this year and the children looked for the hidden eggs all over the church. The Children’s Ministry has been partnering with the ELCA Disaster Response. Our team is the Children’s Ministry Wildfires and our theme is “HEARTS ON FIRE! HELPING HANDS!” In addition to purchasing the Love baskets for Love Inc. any offering that is brought in from now until the end of the school year will go towards our Mission pro-ject. PLEASE REMEMBER to bring in your child’s offering, their Bible or have them invite a friend. I have special heart treats for them when they do. Our Goal is to raise $400.00 by May 22nd. If we raise our goal, we will have an end of the year “Hearts on Fire” celebration. Each week the children bring their offering they will receive a heart on fire and it will be placed outside my office door along the hallway! Let’s fill the hallway with loving helping hands! VBS is right around the corner! Cave Quest is the 2016 theme. We will be Following Jesus through the Light of the World. Vacation Bible School (VBS) is June 13th-17th. Please mark your calendars and look for the registration forms in the Gathering Place, on the Messiah Website and outside the Sunday School office or in the March – May Voice articles. We just finished up learning the Easter and Palm Sunday stories. We will be studying the Last Supper, Mary and Martha and Doubting Thomas in our next rotation. We will also be working on some special projects to honor our moms and dads as well as our “Faith Stepping Stones” project. Every year our children make a quilt square. When they graduate from high school, Norma Scheck makes and presents them a handmade quilt. Thank you so much Norma for your wonderful ministry. At any time if you would like to make up the missing quilt squares, please contact me. As always, it is such a pleasure working with your children.

Fleece Blanket Project There was a fantastic response from the congregation for the fleece blankets for foster children served by Lutheran Social Services of Illinois. Exactly 100 blankets were delivered to LSSI. Everyone from children to seniors participated. The chil-dren receiving the blankets will certainly be comforted and know the love of Jesus through your generosity.

Compassion Sunday Good Samaritan Ministry will be sponsoring a Compassion Sunday on April 24 which will give members of our congre-gation an opportunity to sponsor a child. Compassion focuses on the individual child and his or her development. Each child they serve is ministered to personally, and each church partner they work with tailors its programs to meet the specific needs of the children in its community. We will have further information at our table on April 24. You can read more about Compassion at compassion.com.

SAVE! SAVE! SAVE! Good Samaritan Ministry will be collecting items for a refugee fam-ily in May. As you are doing your spring cleaning, please save basic items for the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. This will help a refu-gee family when they arrive in our country. We will accept new or used items in excellent condition. Please save these items for our June collection. Good Samaritan Ministry will also be collecting children’s clothing in July for Sagrado Corazon, our sister church in Waukegan. We will be accepting clothes for infants through teenagers. Please save clothing that your children have outgrown or no longer use for our clothing drive.

Spring is here and we are ready to start thinking about weeding the grounds and replacing the office area landscap-ing and improving its drainage. On April 3 and 10, you can sign up for the Adopt An Area Program to keep Messiah weed free in 2016. Thanks again to those who signed up for an area last year (and please consider taking part again). We also look forward to having some new weeders—individuals, families, groups of friends, and ministries participat-ing this year. Also on April 3 and 10, we will be selling engraved bricks for the Commemorative Brick Walk in the Gathering Place. The bricks can be inscribed to remember a loved one, to note a significant event in your family or to be dedicated to the Glory of God. All proceeds help fund the church’s landscaping projects. Watch for our Minute for Ministry on April 3.
