Dr. David Mitola, DDS, a member of the Rotary Club of Cohoes, received the Distinguished Service Care Award at the Counseling Care & Services 11th Annual Care Awards Ceremony held on November 6, 2015 at the Cohoes Visitor Center.

Marilyn Wheeler, Founding Executive Director of Counseling Care & Services stated, “Dr. David Mitola has set the standard for community service and more than earned the 2015 Distinguished Service Care Award. Dedicated to the betterment of Cohoes and its citizens, in addition to providing outstanding dental care for the past eight years, Dr. Mitola is leading the way in a host of service projects and groups.”

Dr. Mitola’s Smiles for Literacy book donation program has provided an invaluable service to thousands of children through the Cohoes Community Center Head Start Program, Abram Lansing Elementary School, Harmony Hill Elementary School, and the City of Cohoes Community Youth Bureau and Recreation Department. Dr. Mitola’s office donates a book for every dental cleaning performed. Through his practice Dr. Mitola has donated over 5,000 books.

Handbooks for Students

Corinth Rotary Club, District 7190, presents student handbooks annually to three local schools; Corinth Elementary School, Hadley Luzerne and Kings School. Pictured here is Alysse Kasowski with Hadley Luzerne 3rd graders excited to look through their new handbooks which include everything from a dictionary, world map, guide on all the planets, multiplication facts, presidents, Constitution and their always their very favorite, the longest word in the English language. This is a Corinth Rotary favorite sponsored project to continue the mission of literacy and excite children to learn. This presentation began by teaching the children the Rotary 4-way test and the importance of being a good citizen and tying it in to their character education. Truth, fairness, and goodwill to all mankind are as important to a 3rd grader as it is to a Rotarian. They were encouraged to change the world by becoming a volunteer and making the world a better place in an organization like Rotary someday or anywhere each day that they can. One kid responded by saying, “what if you run out of a job though?’ I chuckled and responded by saying, “that’s the beauty of doing good, you can never do enough.” Alysse Kasowski

Global Grant Update Krysten Oates, November 10, 2015

The beginning of the second year of my MSc program at TU Delft has been exciting so far! My literature search

and a bit of coursework occupied my time for the first quarter. I’ve learned quite a bit about prosthetic sockets – the interface between the skin and the device. With my upcoming internship focused on lower-limb prosthetics, I hope to, incorporate what I learn into my socket design for upper-limb prosthetics that can “grow” as the child who wears it grows.

August 2015 As the start of the 2015-2016 academic year approaches, I am proud to share that I have been awarded another

Rotary Global Grant to support the second and final year of my Masters program in Biomedical Engineering. My first year has been challenging and rewarding, providing me with unexpected educational opportunities related to medical instruments and problem solving as an engineer in clinical environments. As a result, I have worked with the DaVinci surgical robot (in a training environment in Rotterdam), and observed an open heart surgery in the operating room at Leiden University Medical Center! I have had the pleasure of working with bright minds from the Netherlands and from all over the world. My new academic year will include a brief internship at the Northwestern University Prosthetics and Orthotics Center (NUPOC) in Chicago, USA. Once I return to the Netherlands, I will continue work on my Master thesis, related to prosthetic sockets that adapt to children as they grow. Needless to say, I feel very fortunate to be studying at the TU Delft, and am excited for what’s ahead!

September 2015 On 1 September I moved from Rotterdam to Den Hoorn, Zuid-Holland. This is quite a change in terms of scale of

surroundings, but a welcome one in that I now live much closer to Delft, where I have been studying for the past year. Last year was full of coursework, commuting, and limited time to discover the city. On 7 September, I began the final course of my degree program. With one course and otherwise my literature study to keep me busy this month, I am able to appreciate more of my surroundings -- the beauty of the Thursday market on the Markt in Delft, for example. The open-air market is wonderful (especially on a beautiful sunny day). The variety of merchandise and people is exciting, and the otherwise open square transforms into a bustling marketplace. Last week I was fortunate to arrive when the carillon of the Nieuwe Kerk rang in song. I plan to make this part of my routine for as long as the season lasts!

October 2015 The Dutch autumn has blown in quite suddenly, and I already miss the crisp, dry, sunny and cool days of a few

weeks ago. On a sunny day earlier this month, I had the pleasure of meeting Erik van Tuin, of RC Delft Vermeer, who will be my host councilor and club in Delft for the remainder of my grant period.

Regardless of the weather, the first quarter of the academic year is wrapping up, and I am finalizing plans for my move to Chicago in November for my 3-month internship at the Northwestern University Prosthetics-Orthotics Center (NUPOC). Chicago is almost guaranteed to be colder and with snow, come December! At NUPOC, I will be analyzing the walking patterns of people wearing two prosthetic legs. The research will ultimately be used to improve the design of lower-limb prosthetic devices so that such prosthetic users can walk more easily and naturally.

November 2015 This month I write from Chicago, Illinois. It is both strange and familiar to be back in the US. Monday was my first

day on the job as a Visiting Pre-Doctoral Fellow at Northwestern University Prosthetics Orthotics Center (NUPOC), Feinberg School of Medicine. NUPOC is located in a grand art-deco building on Lake Michigan. This impressive type of architecture is iconic to Chicago. Northwestern University’s Chicago campus is in the center of the city, within and among these beautiful and historical buildings.

At NUPOC, it’s interesting to realize how interconnected this field of study is – my colleagues tell me about how they saw my advisor from TU Delft in France last April for the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) conference. Another one of my MSc colleagues here at NUPOC is coincidentally a friend of one of my classmates back at TU Delft -- it’s a small world!

I can tell from the first two days of work that I will learn quite a lot here, and I am looking forward to the next

three months. On Thursday, I learn more about the device testing machinery and proprietary prosthetic technology. The following week I have the opportunity to observe a prosthetic fitting where the MSc students interact with live models – amputees who volunteer to help wear and test prosthetic devices. During the same week I also have the opportunity to meet with the Rotaract Club of Chicago. I look forward to visiting Rotary Foundation HQ in Evanston during my stay here, as well!

More to come!

HELP ROTARY WIN THE FIGHT AGAINST POLIO Here are the top 5 reasons to

END POLIO NOW!

1. The human cost: If we choose to control polio rather than eradicate it, polio could rebound to 10 million cases in the next 40 years.

2. Its achievable: We have the tools to end polio and the means to reach all children. The new bivalent vaccine successfully targets the two remaining strains of polio in one dose.

3. It’s a good investment: An independent study published in the medical journal estimates that the $9 billion global investment in a polio-free world will net an economic benefit of $40 to $50 billion over the next 20 years.

4. It strengthens the system: Our polio eradication efforts have established an active disease surveillance network in all countries that is being used for other health interventions such as measles vaccinations, deworming tablets, and mosquito bed nets.

5. It sets the stage: The ability to reach all children with the polio vaccine is proof of concept that we can succeed on our next major global health initiative.
