BATHROOMBathroom is a place where people can be totally honest about themselves. No matter who

they are, all of them are naked in the bathroom. No jewelries, no Birkin and no Rolex.

Bathroom is a place where people excreted all fecal matter, which includes all pretenses. It

is the place that people can reveal with all kinds of instincts such as pureness, sex, and even

violence. It is the place for thoughts, it is the place for sorrow, it is the place for sex and it is

the place for emptiness.

As a designer, it is important role to find something ordinary and put new meaning for it.

For me, a bathroom is the place where I want to explore and find new meaning for it.

Thus I want to explore all the feelings and thoughts people have in their minds in their

bathroom and create visual designs about it.

RESEARCH

Bathroom is the place where people are naked. Furthermore, bathroom is the place where something happens such as suicide, murder, sex or even masturbation. All crazy things happen in the bathroom which is pretty interesting to me, thus I grabbed the images that belong to the theme of the bathroom.

MOVIE: SHAMEI watched the movie, Shame (2011) for my reseach. In the movie, there were several scenes of bathroom which were pretty interesting to me. In the movie, a main character, Brandon showed a lot of his feelings in his bathroom such lust,devastation and even unsciousness. Furthermore his bathroom is the place where he could talk to his sister without any emotional boundaries. Sadly, his sister tried to commit suicide in his bathroom which was interesting to me. Why did she want to die in his bathroom? I think a bathroom always gives the idea of “naked”, thus people aren’t afraid of doing anything crazy.

Since I’ve decided to choose a “bathroom” as my thesis topic, my first step is research about my bathroom. I’ve decided to take pictures ofmy bathroom and analyze all of my feelings and thoughts that I have in my bathroom.

”My first sketch is inspired by “David Hockney’scollage works, so I’ve created my bathroom picture using by tons of different perspective images of my bathroom.

So I took a lot of pictures to create the photoof my bathroom. Since my bathroom is a small space, I needed to take a lot of pictures from different perspective and distort them a little bitin order to make one picture of my bathroom.

When I take photos of the products in my bathroom, I realize that I have more products than I need to have such as different types of shampoos or even conditioners . I always think that a bathroom is the place where I have nothing because I literally have no clothes on there. However, since I research my bathroom, I find out that I have a lot of things even though I have no clothes on. Then my question comes up, is this place where I can totally honest aboutmyself? Do I have to decorate myself even inthe bathroom? Why do I need a shower curtain

My colors in myself

When I take colors from the products that I have in my bathroom, I am surprised that I have some colors that are little bit darker than I am seeing. Colors are always important to me because it is reflecting my personality.Thus I play with my colors and position them on my profile shape.

I think a bathroom is a place

where people can be denial

whatever they have because

a bathroom is meant to be

blurred. When people take

a shower, all the steamy air

makes room blurred. Then

it creates its own world for

people who want to get in

there to protect themselves.

I played with words that

are related to the products

that I have. I wrote down

all words that I had in my

mind everytime I used

these products.

I’ve been wearing eye glasses

for at least 15 years. Without

it, I can’t see things clearly.

In my bathroom, I don’t

wear it. Thus everything

looks blur. Sometimes I

prefer to see things in that

way. Blur images make

me feel comfortable. It

seems like saying to me

that it is okay to be unclear

everything I see. Then I think

being blur makes people

confused or give some sort

of imaginations because

they can’t see things clearly.

escape from their realities.

Me, my products, words and images

I wrote my bathroom diary so that I could see what I was doing in my bathroom. I wrote down every detail of what I did, what products I used in every morning, in the afternoon and even in the evening. And then I used color tapes to spot where I went and what I used in my bathroom. After this research, I realized that I only use sepcific products and specific spots in my bathroom even though it wasn’t a big space at all.

EXPERIMENT

Color tapes in my bathroom

I tried to figure out the spots where I mostly use. Everytime I used my bathroom, I put tapes the place where I was and the products I used. I used three different colors of tapes such as yellow, black and peach. Yellow is morning time (6 am ~ 12 pm), peach is afternoon time (12 : 01 pm ~ 6 pm), black is night time (6 :01 pm~ 5:59 am).Furthermore I taped on the products that I used such as a shampoo, a body cleanser, shaving cream or a toothbrush. It was interesting to see what kinds of products that I used and when I used. And I realized that there were my own activity patterns in my bathroom.

I used finger prints and foot prints images to show where I mostly used and moved around in my bathroom. Then I analyzed which spot had more anxiety. It was interesting to see how I moved around and what I touched in my bathroom.

After I finished my research of my bathroom spots, I decided to make inforgraphic about what I did in my bathroom. In order to minimize the information that I had, I decided to choose one specifc day or specific period such as a week for designing inforgraphic. For first sketch, I chose Sunday and made inforgraphic about where and when I spotted in my bathroom and what kinds of product that I used.
