Welcome to the Sizzling August edition of the Sherwood Newsletter. What a month in July - no need to go outside the UK for a holiday, just pull out the BBQ, sun lounger and parasol and read the Sherwood with a cool glass of something - lovely!

Our Editor in Chief - Diane went to the Farnsfi eld BBQ for the RBL and found them all reading the Sherwood - A camera appeared and the photo on the front page shows them “loving the Sherwood” (Diane is not wearing the cammo gear!). Anyone who would like to volunteer their group to go on the front page - let us know and we will be over with the camera.

Pick up your bow and arrows and head over to the Robin Hood festival in sherwood Forest - it’s a great annual family event from the 5th to the 12th of August. Enjoy this issue and tell your friends how good it is - or if not pleased tell us!

Testimonial We have had fi ve clients in the last year who said that the ad in The Sherwood was how they came to fi nd us. In all cases we have been able to help them with their debt problems and get their fi nances back on track. It is therefore really worthwhile having information about local services in a local publication (The Sherwood Community Newsletter).Mike Buckley Sherwood Forest money Advice

Mark Spencer MPThe Keogh Review was published which pointed out failures in fourteen hospitals, which led to unusually high mortality rates. King’s Mill Hospital, and the Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS

Foundation Trust, was one of those hospitals singled out for comment. I am sure you will recall the stories of failings by King’s Mill Hospital. For example, it has now well-known that between 2004 and 2010, there was confusion for dozens of women about whether they had the right test results, and therefore the right treatment as well. There are two things that need to be said about this report, and the failures at King’s Mill. First, the reason these failures were allowed to go on for so long was because information was suppressed. Whistle-blowers throughout the NHS were not supported for exposing failures but were effectively told to shut up. Secondly, managerial failings meant problems were not solved. Rather than prioritise patient care, managers focused on ticking boxes. This is not just a problem for patients: clinical staff – the doctors and nurses who do excellent work every day – are often frustrated too. They are rightly focused on patient care, but they are regularly forced to spend too much time dealing with bureaucracy. In both cases though, there is some cause for hope. King’s Mill, as well as Newark Hospital in the Sherwood Forest NHS Foundation Trust, was already improving its standards before the Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt, put them on special measures last Tuesday.

We can’t be complacent. When Professor Keogh’s team arrived at Sherwood Forest Hospitals, one of the most signifi cant problems they discovered was a backlog of complaints. Complaints to hospitals are the most effective way to fi nd problems and to solve them. We need to move on from a culture of secrecy and cover-up to a culture of constant public oversight. It is vital that, at those times when we need the NHS most, we are confi dent that the treatment we receive is of the highest quality, and that the level of care is delivered with the compassion and care we would expect. Police Commissioner praises high-level work to tackle business crime but warns more is needed

Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping has held talks with business leaders to discuss the county’s strategy for dealing with business crime.

Speaking to business leaders at Mansfi eld 2020’s breakfast meeting today (July 27), Commissioner Tipping said Nottinghamshire Police is at the forefront of efforts to reduce business-related crime and its impact on the local economy and is represented in a range of national arenas. This includes the role of Deputy Chief Constable Sue Fish as Business Crime lead at the Association of Chief Police Offi cers, and Inspector Richard Stones as director of the National Business Crime Forum which has its data sharing hub at Ashfi eld School. Commissioner Tipping told retailers that business crime is not exclusive to any one county or police

force area and as such should be recorded under a single defi nition, something which is expected to happen very shortly in Nottinghamshire.“We can’t fi ght business crime unless we know the true scale of the problem so we’re asking all police forces to tag business crime on their crime recording systems so that we can accurately measure offending patterns,” he said. “We’re also asking retailers in Mansfi eld and beyond to become more involved in local crime partnerships to share their experiences and identify possible solutions but understandably they want to see value from their membership and results.

“We all know the challenges that Mansfi eld has faced and the task in front of us. Businesses know that investment and growth takes place in a safe and secure landscape. I’m pleased that Nottinghamshire Police is seen as leaders in this fi eld but I know there is still much to do.”

Children’s Book Review: How to Babysit a GrandadBy Jean ReaganWhen your grandad rings the doorbell, it’s babysitting time! This is a hilarious and accessible picture book about a child spending time with his grandad. Written in a how-to style, the narrator gives important tips for ‘babysitting’ a grandad, including what to eat for snack (anything dipped in ketchup, ice cream topped with cookies, cookies topped with ice cream), what to do on a walk (find lizards and dandelion puffs, be on the lookout for puddles and sprinklers), and how to play with a grandad (build a pirate cave, put on a scary play).isbn: 978-1444915884Amazon approx: £10.79

Mansfield Triathlon Club Hughes Conquers Ironman Nice

Mansfield triathlete Sally Hughes (photo) took 8th in category at the punishing Ironman Nice long distance triathlon. The Ironman consists of a 2.4 mile open water swim and 112.5 mile bike stage through the mountains of the Cote D’Azur followed immediately by a 26.4 mile run. The final run took place along the famous Promenade des Anglais where cold water showers had been installed to cool the runners in the extreme Mediterranean heat. Sally completed the course in just 11 hours, 18 minutes and 15 seconds to join the growing ranks of Mansfield Triathlon Club’s ironman distance competitors.More locally, seven club members were involved in the Nottingham Outlaw half ironman distance. The 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike stage and 13.1 mile run were based at Holme Pierrpont with the bike route striking out into the Nottinghamshire countryside to take in Southwell and East Bridgford and Car Colston. Highest placed for Mansfield was Lorraine Garvey who was placed 8th in category finishing in 5 hours, 51 minutes and 10 seconds. First for the men, taking 11th in category was Ian Conn in 4:48:04.Continuing the theme of extreme sports Chris Holmes took first overall in the Balanced Performance multi-events series of races held at Colwick Park. The series consists of 400m swim, 1500m swim and Aquathlon (750m swim and 5k run) held in quick succession. Chris took first place in both the 400m and 1500m swim and finished in fourth place in the aquathlon, taking just 59:22 for all three events and establishing a new event record in the process having posted the fastest swim times in all three events.

Reluctant Gardener: AugustWell, summer is now in full swing and hopefully you will fi nd some time to enjoy your garden. If your lavender has fi nished fl owering, it can now be cut back and kept in check, this will encourage it to grow new shoots, use a hedge trimmer or shears for the job. Take any cuttings you want before trimming. You can also take cuttings this month of shrubs and herbs and tender perennials such as sage, rosemary, curry plant, hyssop, and rue.

Continue to dead head roses and cut off any suckers which appear, rambling roses can be cut back once they have fi nished fl owering.

Be careful mowing the lawn if the grass is browned and stressed – you may end up killing it altogether. Try and water, but be mindful of leaving the sprinkler on and don’t water in the midday sun – do it early morning or in the evening.

Now is the time to trim your wisteria, shorten all long shoots, which are growing out from the main branches by cutting back to fi ve or six leaves. Unwanted growth on wisteria can be removed to keep the climber under control.

Keep watering your hanging baskets and tubs as they can dry out very quickly in warm weather.

August is the latest you can sow beetroot for an autumn harvest and if you have planted vegetable such as courgettes now is the time to harvest them, use a sharp knife to cut off at the stem and harvest when about 4ins long.

Strawberries have fi nished, but Rhubarb, blackberries and other fruits are ripening and will be ready for a summer pudding.

Happy Gardening. Andy

East Midlands in BloomThe sun shone down on Mansfi eld recently as judges from the East Midlands in Bloom committee were given a guided tour of Mansfi eld as part of the East Midlands in Bloom competition.

The judges were given a whistle-stop tour of the District's parks and open spaces, including Mansfi eld's Green Flag award winning Titchfi eld and Carr Bank Parks, as well as the many and varied fl oral displays in the town centre. The judges were also taken to Asquith Primary School where pupils led them around numerous planting projects on the school grounds.

The judges were given a special In Bloom Portfolio which detailed a large variety of activities that have taken place over the past year thanks to the friends of the parks, community groups and local nature reserves.

The judges also assessed nature conservation,

sustainability, permanent planting and cleanliness of the District.

Friends of Tippings - Wood Volunteers Urgently Needed !!!

Thankfully a ‘Hit Squad’ from the Greenwood Team have had a day strimming the footpaths and around the benches. Also some much needed maintenance has been done as well. However, with large areas of the site being very overgrown it appears to have attracted deer with a number of sightings and more regular sightings of the fox family. A big ‘Thank you’ to several volunteers who have come forward. We are now looking at how to proceed with reforming the group and will contact you. But we still need more volunteers, even if it is just a couple of hours now and then. When Autumn arrives we will be chopping back and lighting the bonfi re. And who doesn’t like a bonfi re? Dog walkers and other users are doing a grand job collecting litter. All of this helps keep the site tidy. Would you like to be a ‘Friend of Tipping Wood’ ? Do you have an hour or two once a week to help maintain the site? Tippings Wood belongs to the community. Let’s do our best to keep this valuable asset for our community. If you can help please ring 07950 646620 or email [email protected]

Commemorative Visit to - Foncquevilliers1st July 1916 was the fi rst day of the Battle of the Somme, and a day which proved to be the worst in the history of the British Army, when 60,000 casualties were recorded on that day alone. Many were men of the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) and, in particular the 1/7th Battalion, known as the Robin Hood Rifl es. This unit was involved in a diversionary attack at Gommecourt; of the 627 that went ’over the top’ only 90 returned.

For many, their last resting place is the Commonwealth War Graves cemetery in the tiny French village of Foncquevillers, just 2 kms from Gommecourt and about 20 kms south-west of Arras. For the last 30 years, representatives of Nottinghamshire Army Cadet Force, the last unit ever to wear the Robin Hoods cap badge, have been visiting the village for a commemorative service in the cemetery on that day. Over those years, the size of the visiting party has dwindled from a coachful to just four senior offi cers. However, for the last three years, the party has again been swelled by the presence of the newly formed Robin Hood Cadet Band, which has been so successful that they have been invited to play for the next fi ve years at the famous dusk ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres.

This year’s party again included the usual stalwarts of Colonel Roger Merryweather, TD DL of Southwell, Lieutenant Colonel Trevor Wilds from Farnsfi eld and Colonel Peter Walker and Captain Eon Booth from Ravenshead. Colonels Merryweather and Walker are former Commandants of the Nottinghamshire Army Cadet Force and Lt Colonel Wilds is a former Deputy Commandant. An invitation has been extended to the French villagers to attend a service at Southwell Minster next year to commemorate the start of the First World War. c/o Trevor Wilds

BLIDWORTH & RAVENSHEAD PPGWe are a small group of patients who represent patients registered at the GP Practice at Blidworth & Ravenshead. All patients are welcome to attend our meetings to learn more about the PPG’s role, and how important patients contributions are to GPs’ in helping them understand the needs of patients in respect of healthcare locally. Following changes brought about with the new Health Bill, patients have a greater say about their healthcare. To reinforce this for our patients, members of the PPG have a vital role to play in informing and developing the effectiveness of the Newark & Sherwood Clinical Commissioning Group in providing an adequate service for patients. Gilly Hagen our Chair is a volunteer Patient Leader for the area. Being involved ensures patients can learn more about The Practice and what is happening locally and in the Newark & Sherwood Area via the – www.blidworthandravensheadsurgery.co.uk - or fi nding out about local events etc via our noticeboards at the surgeries.

Bards at BlidworthWriting poetry should involve, what has often been referred to, as a dip into the unconscious and a shoring up in appropriate words, that which we wish to express. I have often heard poets say of their work - ‘I don’t know where that came from but it just came into my conscious mind’. Linking left brain with right is involved in the process. This is something we have discussed at Bards at Blidworth along with the awareness that we can all create poetry in different ways. Reading a poem on the page is quite a different experience from hearing a poem read by its author. A remarkable poet in the group is George Wilcockson, who lost both his hearing and his sight some time ago. He creates his poems in his mind, learns them off by heart and then recites them to his audience and stores them all in his head. He, and his own little production team, have recently produced a beautiful little pamphlet book The Silent Wolf and many congratulations to George, and his team for doing so.

Poetry is a great healer but a nice cup of tea and a biscuit and a chat with a good friend can work a few miracles too!Christine Michael, http:www.thynkspublications.co.uk

Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage SocietyOur July meeting had Gordon Asher talk about his days as a surveyor and rent collector. A dry subject but in fact hilarious and enjoyed by all.Chairman, John Smallwood reported on behalf of ‘Friends of Blidworth Windmill’ regarding its preservation. Afterwards Alan Higgins continued his presentation of Commemorative Stones, this month it was the Joseph Whittaker Memorial stone and the memorial erected by Mr Whitaker for the Egyptian Nightjar that was shot in Thieves Wood. It happened to be the fi rst one ever to be seen in the UK and at the time, only the second Europe! For our next meeting our speaker will be Victoria Preece, talking about the children of Southwell

Workhouse and Alan Higgins will continue his presentations of local interest.Meeting in August starts 7 pm. We meet on the fi rst Tuesday of the month at the Methodist Chapel on Main Street, Blidworth. New members are always welcome; just turn up on the night. Normally a small charge of £2 which includes refreshments. If you have any photographs of the village and its people that we may copy and add to our archive we would be most grateful. If you would like more information please contact me, Dale Smallwood, Secretary, on 01623 479978 or visit our website. www.blidworthhistoricalsociety.co.uk, Email: [email protected] You can also follow us on Twitter @BlidworthHistory

Farnsfi eld & District RBL“A welcome break in the dull weather greeted several hundred local people who enjoyed a fi ne evening of fun, entertainment and good food at the annual Armed Forces Day Barbeque organised by the Farnsfi eld & District Branch of the Royal British Legion. Mr Philip Pedley was once again kind enough to provide the venue in his garden and outbuildings at Old Manor Farm on Main Street.

A large number of local people took advantage of the fi ne Summer evening and came along to enjoy a feast of excellent food, washed down with Jugs of Pimms, and lively musical entertainment provided by ‘Frankie’ and “Refl ections”. The courtyard provided an ideal place to dance and enjoy the happy atmosphere. The event is held to

promote the charitable work of the Legion in support of the Armed Forces and a double quilt, handmade by Mrs Dulcie Corser and donated to the Branch, was raffl ed during the evening. Thanks to the generosity of a number of local individuals and businesses the prize draw was also very successful with prizes ranging from shooting and fi shing lessons, whisky and wine to days out at various local attractions. Mrs Cynthia Carr, chair of the Organising Committee said “We were blessed with a lovely evening and tremendous support which made all the hard work worthwhile. We are very grateful for the fantastic support we get from local people and we are pleased that they came along, enjoyed themselves and supported us in such numbers”.

The Branch was also represented at the Halifax Bomber Memorial on the outskirts

of Farnsfi eld where the annual service was held to mark the anniversary and honour the memory of the 7 young crew members of a Halifax Bomber which crashed on the site whilst returning from a sortie over enemy territory in July 1944. The Branch Standard was paraded as were those of 1260 Squadron Air Training Corps and the Mansfi eld Branch of the Royal Air Force Association. The Sea Cadet Corps was represented by a party from TS Newark Castle. The Service was conducted by Reverend Peter Graves and the congregation included Mr & Mrs Alan Knight, relatives of one of the crew members, who had driven up from their home in Devon to attend.”

Church ArticleA group in our church recently tried this quiz based on Charles Schultz philosophy - the creator of the “Peanuts” comic strip. The outcome was really interesting and thought provoking, and supports the view that in terms of making a difference; people don’t care how much you know – until they know how much you care! Try this yourself – it really makes you think!1. Name the fi ve wealthiest people in the world2. Name fi ve Gold medal winners from the 2012 Olympics3. Name the last fi ve winners of Miss World4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize5. Name the last six Academy Awards winners for best actor and actress 6. Name the last decade’s Sports Personalities of the YearThe point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second rate achievers, they are the best in their fi eld. But the applause dies, and awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten, accolades and certifi cates are buried with

their owners.1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school2. Name three friends who have helped you through a diffi cult time3. Name fi ve people who have taught you something worthwhile4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special5. Think of fi ve people you enjoy spending time withThe lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care. You may not feel like you’re the most successful, the most infl uential or the richest person in the world, but if you care you are probably making a greater impact than you imagine. Keep loving, keep serving and keep caring – and only God really knows what a difference you are making!Remember – there will be people – who if they did this quiz – would put YOUR name down!REUBEN JOHNSON

More Local NewsJigsaw Charity WalkWe would like to say a big thank you to everyone who sponsored and/or took part in our charity walk last month. We are pleased to report that, despite the inclement weather, a group of about 20 of us plus dogs set sail to complete our sponsored walk in aid of our chosen Charity of the Year, Jigsaw Support Scheme from Mansfi eld. We were thrilled to attract clients from as far away as Belfast and Glasgow and with the support and encouragement of Blidworth Walking Group, we enjoyed a scenic stroll around Sherwood Pines. We were delighted to raise a total of £250 which, with gift aid, means a total of £312.50 will be donated to Jigsaw. Ginny Cullen, Fundraising and Communication Co-ordinator for the Charity said “ This is a tremendous effort and will enable us to put on 10 training sessions for our volunteers and workers”.

The 3½ mile walk that took the group through Sherwood Pines was led by Linda Elliott and the Blidworth Wallking Group. The Walking Group started walking in the local countryside in October 2010 with just 9 walkers, since then the numbers have grown to over 100 people.
