The blocks are extruded with vertical perforations.

Sawdust and polystyrene particles are mixed in

with the clay matrix which, during firing, burn

away to give a micro-porous structure. The

combination of voids and pores gives the blocks

their unique thermal properties.

After firing the blocks are planed top and bottom

to within 0.5mm tolerance.

Blocks are available in a full range of sizes,

shapes, widths and densities and are suitable for

almost all masonry applications in low-rise

residential and commercial construction.

Design with

The most cost efficient and robust form of

construction is a rendered solid 'breathing'

external wall that exceeds building regulation

requirements without cavities, membranes or

additional insulation.

Insulating blocks can carry loads from concrete

floors and can also be used as infill panels in

framed buildings. It is also possible to use them

below dpc level with tanking to build cellars

internal walls are denser

so they have better load-bearing, acoustic and

thermal storage properties but lower thermal

insulation. Internal blocks can be used to meet

the requirements for separating walls and have

excellent fire resistance.

external walls are

weather and air tight, very vapour permeable,

excellent for thermal insulation and also for

protection against summer over-heating, fire

resistant and with good acoustic properties.

Tolerances

The blocks are very accurate ONLY in the height

dimension. The width and length dimensions are

within normal manufacturing limits for building

materials.

The accuracy of the top and bottom faces allows

the use of very thin bed joints and fast laying

rates. We do however recommend allowing a

10mm bed of normal mortar every storey to

avoid cumulative errors.

Solid -Ziegel walls are not designed to be

built fair-faced. Normal variations in block width

are hidden by the lightweight render and plaster

layers, which are also important for thermal and

acoustic insulation and air-tightness.

Building with

Accurate thin bed joints, dry interlocking vertical

joints, easy handling and cutting, and a full range

of lintols and accessory blocks mean fast

construction times, assured performance, good

cost benefits and lower skill requirements.

Time spent setting out the level of the 1 course

accurately together with good site planning gives

real benefits in site productivity.

The thin joint mortar is easy to apply either from a

special roller or by dipping each block in a

shallow tub of mortar. Blocks are then simply

stacked on the mortar bed, with perp joints

interlocked and mortar free.

Maintaining bond is easy using half blocks or by

cutting the blocks with purpose made saws, and

filling the gaps with insulating mortar.

The mortar gains strength and stiffness quickly so

a storey height can be built in 1 day ready for the

floor or roof the next day.

The build process is virtually dry so the wall is

immediately ready for finishing without the risk of

long-term drying out shrinkage.

There is very little wastage of material because of

the large range of special blocks and the ease of

accurate cutting.

Plan-Ziegel BlocksPlan-Ziegel Blocks

Laying NBT ZiegelThermoPlan®

Lay the damp-proof course on a thin

mortar bed on the slab or sub-

structure. Group 3 mortar should be

used (for this course only).

Cover The DPC with a further amount

of mortar and accurately level the

bed joint using the levelling rails or

setting blocks (See “Setting Out Methods”)

Position the first block and ensure that

it is accurate in plumb and

alignment.

Thin Bed Mortar should be mixed with

9 -11 Ltrs. of clean, cold water per

bag - max 2 bags at a time. Mix

thoroughly with a power stirrer and

allow to stand for 10 minutes

Place a second block at the next

corner / opening - string a line

between - then lay the first course

directly onto the mortar bed. Do not

twist blocks to “settle” - use a rubber

mallet to gently tap them down.

Pour thin bed mortar into roller

applicator. Roller should be

thoroughly cleaned after use and

lightly oiled to prevent corrosion.

Using the roller applies the correct

amount of mortar to the surface of

the blocks.

Position the next course of blocks with

the interlocking profile fully engaged.

Only use mortar on non-interlocking

joints - cut joint, corner, abutments etc.

Tap into place with a rubber mallet.

Plan site layout to avoid unnecessary

man handling - easy handling saves

the builder time and effort.

Setting out and using Levelling Rails

Setting out and laying of the first

course of Plan-Ziegel is critical if the

speed advantage of the system is to

be maximised - Using NBT’s levelling

rail set makes this a simple process.

Set the first frame at the highest point

of the slab / footing.

Adjust the level the rail frame in both

directions - setting as low as possible.

Attach the laser target staff and target

if used, to the frame and set laser

height so as laser beam in line with a

datum mark.

Each frame has an adjustable rod

that can be used to set width of bed

to be laid. Set these to suit width of

block being used, 300, 365, 425 etc.

Set down second frame and adjust

level and height in relation to first

frame. Attach laser target staff to

check height.

Spread a thin layer of Group 3 mortar

onto the slab / sub-structure between

the two frames. Roll out DPC then

cover with a further amount of Mortar.

Rule off the mortar bed using a

suitable straight edge / level. Using a

trowel remove excess mortar to leave

a neat, straight edge to the bed.

Trim off excess mortar to leave a neat

bed. Leaving the second frame in

position move the first frame along the

slab, level off and check height as

before. Continue around site till

returning to initial start / datum point.

Dependant of the size of the site you

can either a) Start laying the first course

directly onto the mortar bed if still “soft”

or b) Allow bed to dry and lay blocks

following day onto a thin bed of Ziegel

mortar spread by Roller Applicator.

Corners and Wall Terminations

Reveal Blocks

Angle Blocks

Corner and End Blocks are available

for corners and wall terminations.

These blocks have the interlocking

profile on one face only and the

ribbing of the blocks is also heavier.

Coursing of corner blocks should be

as shown (See Construction details

section for more detailed

information.)

The non-interlocking joint should be

filled with Baumit-Bayosan LTM81

insulating mortar to prevent cold

bridging through the joint.

For improved weather protection at

window and door frames the reveal

and half reveal blocks should be

used.

Frames should be installed with a

Compriband strip and an APU sealing

rail prior to rendering.

Coursing of reveal blocks should be

as shown (See Construction details

section for more detailed

information.)

For direction changes of 45 NBT

supply a pre-formed angle block that

maintains the interlocking profile.

° Other angles require the block to be

cut and the joint filled with LTM81

insulating mortar.

Coursing of angle blocks should be as

shown (See Construction details

section for more detailed

information.)

Wall Junctions

Stainless Steel thin bed wall tie plates

should be used in each course at wall

Junctions

Using a coarse file/rasp cut a groove

in the top surface on the block.

Cutting the groove eliminates rocking

of the block.

Bend the wall ties to form a 90 angle.

(To prevent injury from ties protruding

until abutting wall section built.) Bed

tie in thin bed mortar.

°

Ties should be installed in alternate

courses as a minimum 1 tie for

115mm and wide and 2 ties for all

other widths and for the PFZ blocks.

The abutting wall should be built with

a 10-15mm mortar joint to the main

wall section.

Just prior to building the abutting wall

bend the tie straight.

Building Techniques

Building Curved Wall Sections

Building curved wall sections with

Ziegel is simple especially when

compared to curved twin element

cavity construction.

For a radius less than 3.5m

Cut the blocks to form a taper. LTM81

should still be used in the joint due to

the lack of interlocking profile.

For a radius greater than 3.5m

Open up the joint by a maximum of

20mm. The open joint should then be

filled with LTM81 insulating mortar.

Page 18: Thermo Plan Manual Zeigle Blocks

Lintols, Ringbeams and Padstones.

Pre-cast lintol sections are available

in lengths from 1m - 2.75m in

increments of .25m. in a range of

widths to suit most applications. (see

data sheet)

The lintol section should be laid on a

10mm bed of group 3 mortar with

one to two courses of make up

blocks over.

A minimum support length of 125mm

should be allowed at the bearing

points. The lintol should be propped

at centres no greater than 1M during

installation and curing.

For higher loads/wide spans the

Thermoplan range of U or WU blocks

should be used.

At wall terminations the end block

should be turned through 90 to cap

the end of the run.

°

Blocks should be laid over a suitable

support / former during construction.

Bed the blocks on a 10mm bed of

group 3 mortar.

Instal reinforcement bars / cage and

fill with grade of concrete to

engineers specification. The U and WU

blocks may be used to create lintols,

ringbeams ....

padstones and service voids. The WL block can be used for creating

an insulated bearer for floor slabs.

Using Thermoplan Full Ziegel

As for all Thermoplan blocks the first

course should be laid on a 10-15mm

bed of group 3 mortar

Subsequent courses should be laid

using the Thermoplan Thin Bed Mortar

as supplied with the blocks

The blocks can be dipped into a bath

of mortar or the mortar can be

applied by a Thermoplan roller.

The wall section should be built with

interlocking joints mortar free. Build the

complete wall section ready for

backfilling with concrete.

Once filled the wall section will

achieve high load capacity with

excellent heat storage and acoustic

qualities.

The system blocks should be built as

half-bond to allow the void to be fully

filled with concrete to engineers

specification.

The abutment connection should be

made using a 10-15mm mortared

joint to the main wall element.

Thin bed wall ties should be installed

at every course and positioned to

project into the filling void as shown.

DO NOT fit or omit ties from the

junction.

Floors, In-fill Panels and Basements

Thermoplan blocks can be used with

most conventional flooring

techniques...

With precast slab, block and beam or cast in-situ.

Thermoplan Ziegel blocks are the

ideal solution to in-fill panels within a

steel or concrete frame construction.

The ZT range can be laid to lengths of

up to 25 linear metres and the ZV,

reinforced bed range up to 40

without expansion or movement

joints.

The ability to build longer lengths of

wall sections without the need for

expansion joints is a major plus when

building large scale units such as

commercial or multi-storey blocks.

Thermoplan Ziegel blocks can be

used for basement wall construction

to provide an insulated structure.

Once built the external face should

be primed before applying a

waterproofing membrane such as

Bituthene or similar.

The membrane should be further

protected using a drainage protection

board. The drainage protection board

protects the membrane from being

punctured whilst also reducing hyro-

static pressure.

Cutting, Chasing and Drilling

The preferred methods of cutting

Thermoplan blocks are by a alligator

type saw such as the Dewalt DW390

(L) saw available from most tool

merchants.

NBT supply a longer 475mm blade

bar and the blades to suit that can

be easily fitted to the DeWalt Alligator

saw to enable the blocks to be cut in

one pass.

Alternatively a large capacity

diamond block saw should be used

such as the G lz BS650 or BS900.ö

Cutting of channels for electrical

services etc. should be created by

first cutting the side slots with a twin

wheel diamond wall chaser...

Do not use a “hammer and bolster”

or powered impact hammer

technique as this will crack the inner

core of the blocks.

once cut use a wide faced bolster to

“break” the core of the channel by

levering sideways.

Conventional TCT or Diamond tipped

drilling tools and core bits should be

used to drill the blocks.

DO NOT USE HAMMER / PERCUSSION

ACTION - doing so will crack the inner

core of the blocks and lead to

oversized hole creation.

Suitable safety protection should be

worn during all cutting, drilling and

chasing operations. Were possible use

dust extraction to lower the dust levels.

reduction in the recommended load.

In order to achieve the maximum performance from

any anchor when installed in masonry it is necessary

to install the anchor as close to the centre of the block

/ brick as possible. In addition, if multiple anchors are

to be installed into a brick / block they should be

installed with the largest axial spacing possible.
