Beauty at its finest!

The thinness of the Sl30-ISO® profile allows windows and doors to become almost two-dimensional like a painting. They bring to mind the works of Mondriaan, frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van de Rohe, but now with a comfortable interior climate!

While these systems can have an industrial aesthetic, they can also be used in more traditional environments. In fact, these steel-framed glazing systems can enrich any environment, whether modern, minimalist or traditional, depending on the use of colour, geometry and division lines – a designer’s dream.

Bringing the outside world inside

Strong and durable, steel profiles allow for the creation of ultra-thin and yet highly stable windows. Steel framing can be made to be very light and thin by combining the inherent strength of steel with smart design. Thanks to these unique properties, architects can enjoy the freedom to incorporate large areas of glazing into their designs.

The very thin 30 mm sightline of the SL30-ISO® profile integrates perfectly into the design of a building: being almost invisible, it allows huge amounts of light to flood in, enhancing the connection between the inside and outside world.

An SL30-ISO® profile of 80mm has a bending resistance that is almost identical to that of an aluminium curtain wall profile with a total depth of 150 mm and a profile width of 50 mm.

As the elastic bending modulus of steel is 3 times higher than that of aluminium, the linear moment of inertia of a steel profile can be 3 times smaller while still achieving the same bending resistance.

SL30-ISO® profile:Ix=38,30cm4

3O mm sightlineAn important feature of this profile system is the minimal amount of framing needed to achieve structural integrity. The SL30-ISO® profile also has a sightline of 30 mm for mullions and transoms, which makes it the thinnest profile system on the market today.

for a tilt-and-turn window with fixed glass panels around, the sightline is only 50 mm.

High strength The standard SL30-ISO® profile is very thin with a narrow depth and yet extremely strong. Its bending resistance values are very high in comparison with other common profile systems.

Large glazed surfacesThe profile’s high resistance means large dimensioned window panels can be installed. In many situations, fixed glazed panels can achieve a height of 3.0 m depending on wind loads and glass specification.

Thermal Insulation

The thermal insulation of a window or door is calculated in accordance with EN 10077-1 and 10077-2.

The total thermal insulation of a window or door is determined by the insulation value for the profile and the insulated glass unit.

This is calculated using the following formula: U-window = %gl * Ugl + %fr * Ufr + Lg * ψgl

U-window (Uw) insulation value for a complete window or door %gl : surface area of the glazed section expressed as

a percentage of the total surface area Ugl : insulation value of the glass %fr : surface area of the profile expressed as a

percentage of the total surface area Ufr : insulation value of the profile Lg : total circumference of the glass/total surface

area ψgl : indication of the heat loss from the edge seal of the insulated glass unit

The SL30-ISO® windows achieves its low insulation values thanks to the high performance thermal separation between the internal and external profiles as well as its narrow sight line.

CE The values given on these pages for thermal insulation were calculated in accordance with current European Standards, EN-ISO 10077-1 and EN-ISO 10077-2.

Ufr - The SL30-ISO-PLUS® thermal insulation profile systemThe SL30-ISO® profile series achieves the following thermal insulation values:

SL30-ISO-PLUS® fixed glazing: Ufr = 1.9 W/m2K (EN 10077-2)

SL30-ISO-PLUS® tilt-and-turn window: Ufr = 1.5 W/m2K (EN 10077-2)

When comparing these values with other profile systems, please note that Ufr is expressed in Watts/m2. In general SL30-ISO® profile is 50% slimmer in comparison with common systems. This means SL30-ISO® windows insulate far better than a system with the same Ufr but with a broader sightline.

Ugl - Thermal insulation of glass

SL30-ISO®

Insulated glass with one cavity can be produced with an insulation value of Ugl = 1.0 W/m2. The insulation value for the glass edge seal (ψgl value) is also very important. Synthetic glass support spacers and synthetic spacer bars are becoming increasingly popular and help provide superb insulation values.

Ufr - The SL30-ISO® Thermal insulation profile systemThe SL30-ISO® profile series provides the following thermal insulation values:

SL30-ISO® fixed glazing: Ufr = 2.6 W/m2K (EN 10077-2)

SL30-ISO® tilt-and-turn window: Ufr = 3.0 W/m2K (EN 10077-2)

SL30-ISO® SL30-ISO-PLUS®Wind and water tightnessThe SL30-ISO® steel window system is able to conceal a fully integrated water drainage system within the profiles thanks to the system’s superior sealing components. This results in a high level of wind and water tightness without any visible holes or rain caps.

> 600 Pa for fixed parts and wings; class 8A of EN12208 > 450 Pa for doors; class 7A of EN 12208.

Edge sealing of insulated glass unitsStandard triple or double insulated glass units cannot be used in the SL30-ISO® profile system without the side seal of the insulated glass unit often becoming visible (a standard edge seal is often larger than the support for the glass behind the flange plus the height of the rubber).

In cooperation with our glass suppliers, a solution to this problem was found in which not only makes the edge seal smaller, but also reduces the dimensional tolerance in the glass dimensions has also been reduced. In the most extreme cases, when all tolerances are “negative” for the visibility of the edge seal, the visibility of the edge seal is limited to a maximum of 2 mm, which is masked by the glazing sealant.

Glazing beads

Fixed parts, doors and windows

Metal glazing beads 1.a. Steel box shaped glazing bead

The box-shaped glazing beads are invisibly clipped onto steel buttons to create a smooth finish. The profiles are powder coated using the same finish as the window profiles and positioned within the rebate.

1.b. Steel L-shaped glazing bead with visible fixings

The L-shaped steel glazing beads help create a minimalist design. The L-shaped profiles are very slim, blend into the profile width and are fixed with visible matching countersunk screws. These glazing beads are powder coated using the same finish as the window profiles.

1.c. Aluminium L-shaped glazing bead with no visible fixings

By the end of 2014, MHB will have a L-shaped glazing bead system available that does not require any visible fixing screws. The aluminium glazing beads will be clipped onto fixing points in recess. Apart from the aesthetic value, this system will also be easier to install. Contact MHB for information on availability.

SL30 ISO® window and door systems come with standard hardware but can also be fitted with bespoke hardware. In general, most doors and tilt-and-turn windows can be equipped with standard available hardware. Turning windows are usually equipped with bespoke hardware.

for special designs we are happy to engineer a customised solution.

The fully sealed version requires taking special care when installing the glass, observing specific instructions. This version is used in case the glazing is done from the exterior side.

2.b. Putty seal, ventilated cavity

This is similar to a putty seal but also has a ventilated cavity around the glass, integrated water drainage and invisible drain holes.

In order to imitate windows from the past, SL30 ISO® windows allow for the use of putty glazing solutions. This sealing adhesive is used to fix glass panes into windows and doors. Putty is highly elastic and is specially developed to be long lasting as well as to match the colour of the profiles. It is very easy to coat this sealant by paintbrush with paint, which is especially useful as a long-term solution.

Divided light

There are 3 ways to divide glass elements into smaller units, which is usually done for aesthetic reasons.

3.a. Divided light system 1 ‘truly divided’

The traditional way of dividing window units is by using separate fields within a single element. In this case each element contains several glass panes.

3.b. Divided light system 2, ‘apparent divided’

A more practical solution for dividing window units is to place profiles on top of both sides of the glass. The appearance is on both sides IDENTICAL to the ‘true division’ system because of the way the insulated glass unit is built up using a divided spacer bar configuration. This solution has the advantage of lower costs, stronger elements and better insulation.

3.c. Divided light system 3, ‘EL tray system’

Only 20 mm sightlines!

A truly unique ‘look’ for SL30-ISO® windows can be achieved using the ‘EL tray system’ of dividing window elements. This creates an extremely slim appearance with carefully engineered and applied flat muntins on both sides. In this solution there are real muntins on both sides.

4. Surface treatment and powder coating

When designed and produced well, steel windows have an extremely long life expectancy, which means that the type of surface treatment is crucial. All MHB windows and doors are powder coated in our factory. Powder coating is the best available method of preserving steel. The surface and colour treatment consists of abrasive blasting and 3 layers of powder coating, in which first layer is zinc-rich epoxy. The overall layer thickness is 180 microns in accordance with Dutch standards. Powder coating colours are standard RAL colours, but special colours are also possible, depending on availability and compatibility.

Wind and water tightness performance

Wind and water tightness in everyday use:

The optimum conditions under which our products are manufactured with a view to official testing are not always matching the conditions when products are made in larger production runs at our factory, or when the products are installed in a building. We therefore need to be realistic and clear with our customers that the results obtained in official tests are not necessarily the same as what can be expected in everyday use.

MHB therefore guarantees the following level of performance based on CE-certification:

Fixed windows 9A (600PA) Class 4

Windows- turning outward 8A (450PA) Class 4

- tilt-and-turn window 9A (turning inward) (600PA) Class 4

Doors- turning outward 8A Class 4 (450PA)

- turning inward 8A (450PA) Class 4

Official wind and water tightness tests:

MHB products obtained the following results in wind and water tests performed by CE-accredited testing laboratories.

Fixed windows E1200 (1200PA) Class 4

Windows- turning outward E1200 (1200PA) Class 4

- tilt-and-turn window 9A (turning inward) (600PA) Class 4
