There is a big difference between main stream and independent film production. Main stream production nearly always includes well known, famous actors. It will usually have a big budget and use that to make lots of CGI, build big sets and use a vast number of locations.

Independent film production uses actors that aren’t highly sought after and are usually new to the acting scene. Small budgets and as much focus on the acting as apposed to the special effects is done. The small budget is usually obvious due to the lack of CGI, locations and extravagant props used.

Independent production companies haveproduced many well known, successful thrillerfilms. These include ‘Kidulthood’ ‘Psycho’ and ‘Adulthood’ which despite all having relatively small budgets did very well in the box office.Main stream companies produced more well known films such as the ‘Bourne’ trilogy,‘World War Z’ and ‘Shutter Island’.

After looking at both production companies I think it is apparent that my film falls into the category of independent film. This is due to the realistic nature, up and coming non famous actors, the use of settings we had around us, such as a warehouse we didn’t have to change before using, which meant no money had to be spend on props or extras. The fact that there is also a small cast meant that the budget could be kept low, also only a few locations are shot which meant hardly any money had to be spent on travelling or hiring out locations.

After researching independent film production and distribution companies I found one which seemed very fitting to my film. It seemed the sort of company which works with films similar to my film and would possibly distribute my film.

This company is called ‘Independent’

This production company is called independent and is entitled that because it works with low budget independent films. On it’s website it says ‘INDEPENDENT specializes in the development, financing, production and distribution of independent feature films.’ ‘INDEPENDENT has also recently established a UK Distribution arm.’ which means that it is fitting for my film as it is a British film.

It has produced films similar to mine in genre such as the famous ‘We need to talk about Kevin’ which was a dark gritty and realistic film.

This film is very similar to my film in many ways. Firstly it fits into the genre thriller. Also it has the story line of a British teenager being

chased by a professional “bad guy” which is the basic story line for my film.

After watching the trailer it seems similar to my film in the clothes they are wearing, and locations they choose to film in.

My film doesn’t include any well known actors, and that is similar to this film which only had one famous person and a few slightly known actors.

As it is an independent film a big box office premier all over the country with it featuring at lots of large film festivals is unlikely.

It is much more likely to be shown at small, independent cinema companies as apposed to big chains. Independent British film festivals such as ‘LIFF’ (London independent film festival) and ‘Rain Dance’ would both be fitting for my film to be showcased at.
