Theories and methodologies of historiography
Students get an insight into the basic characteristics of the history of historiography, observing
the modification of the historical science and the circumstances, which in different historical
periods affected the writing of history.
In the first they are introduced to the writing about the past in antiquity, observing the
questions linked to the use of oral and written sources and the characteristics of political andmilitary history of the time. Students will learn about the medieval historiography and its
forms, followed by gradual historiographic shift away from the antique and medieval ways of
writing history and the first attempts of forming history as a science, with its own object of
research and methodology. In this context the emphasis is put on the positivistic period in
Europe and Slovenian lands.
Students also get familiar with the most important historiographic trends of the ! th century,
especially those, favouring a global and interdisciplinary historiography, f.e. the "rench
#nnales school. In this context the differences between particular approaches and research of
political, social, economic and cultural history as well as historical anthropology are observed,
together with corresponding methods. # special emphasis is also dedicated to the basic
questions of historiography, namely, what is history $and historiography%, what are historicalfacts, sources, historical truth, objectivity, as well as to the actuali&ation of these questions,
observing f.e. the contemporary public uses of history.
