Admit to Steamer Erastus Wiman.[No place: Committee on Celebration of the Inaugurationof Washington] 1889. Two identical souvenir tickets.4.25" x 6.75". Elaborately printed blue card stock withembossed design of a Washington medallion in silver,gold, and blue, the perforated ticket stubs remain intact.Near fine with a minute trace of sunning along edges. In1889, New York City celebrated the centennial ofPresident Washington’s 1789 inauguration in grand style.Then-President Benjamin Harrison was symbolicallyrowed to the shores of New York where he boarded theDespatch. Flanked by the escorting steamers ErastusWiman and Sirius, the presidential naval procession andceremonies commenced. At hand are two invitation-onlytickets for VIP guests to board the Steamer ErastusWiman at the Pier foot of 23rd Street, North River. Thesetickets were issued for the Honorable H.B. Peirce and theHon. H.C. Hartwell. On the steamer these two menshared the company of ex-President Rutherford B. Hayesand future president Theodore Roosevelt. (Roosevelt’sname is printed on both tickets as a committee member.)The Erastus Wiman than took guests to a private receptionat the Lawyer’s Club. H.B. Peirce is likely Henry B.Peirce, one-time Secretary of the Commonwealth ofMassachusetts, H.C.
