THE NEWBRIDGECOROMANDEL

INTRODUCTION

"All in all this is a neat, compact boatwhose finish charms the eye." Practical Boat

Owner enjoyed the good looks and performance of our Chinese riggedCoromandel.

The Coromandel has been designedusing the hull of the world famous Corribeewith a freshly styled cabin top in sympathy with the safety and comfort of sailingwith the Chinese rig.

DESIGN"A spacious and efficient 21 footer well builtand economically priced. " YachtingMonthly.

On a hull designed by Robert Tucker(the Corribee) the Newbridge design teamdeveloped the Coromandel as the firstproduction yacht to be designed specifically for the Chinese rig. Sailing Chinesereduces foredeck work to mooring andanchoring so that the foredeck and sidedecks can be reduced in size, increasingcabin space; the absence of jib sheets,

winches etc. means the cockpit can bewider and deeper and the less precisesheeting requirements allow us to doaway with the inconvenience of a mainsheet track and traveller. Down below shehas berths enough for four (one in ahammock), a neat galley, and a surprisingly roomy separate toilet compartment. The large cockpit includes an outboardwell and ample locker room. The Coromanders sea-kindly lines smooth outunkindly sea conditions and the highcockpit coamings offer a high degree ofprotection to the helmsman and crew. TheCoromandel is purpose built to reduce therisks and increase the pleasure of yoursailing time.

CONSTRUCTIONThe Coromandel is built of tough, high

specification, Lloyds approved GRP.Moulded in our own workshops to thehighest standards, using balsa sandwichconstruction in the deck with hardwoodand ply stiffeners as necessary, particularattention being taken to provide deck andhull stiffening in way of the mast. The hullconstruction incorporates a sandwich ofchopped strand mat and woven roving forstrength and rigidity. The hull and deckare bonded and rivetted together, guaranteeing a watertight and structural seal atthe deck edge. The interior moulding isprecision engineered for added strengthand fine detailing.

Two keel options are available. Both thefixed fin and bilge keel versions employhigh density iron castings, encapsulatedin the GRP moulded keels which are partof the reinforced hull. The bilge keels areof assymetrical aerofoil design to maximise windward performance. The mast isof circular section anodised aluminium, immensely strong and held rigid by thecabin roof and firmly anchored to thekeelson. All fittings are of the highestNewbridge standard with fine attentionto detail such as the selected varnishedmarine grade hardwoods.

Not only are almost all the major components used in building the Coromandelmade by Newbridge, the whole yacht isassembled by Newbridge with the backing of 30 years of experience; the provenmethods of manufacture having recentlybeen checked and improved on by theCranfield Institute ofTechnology who alsohelped introduce a detailed QualityControl System including over 200detailed checks on each boat plus a testtank "anti leak" procedure on every yacht.

AUXILIARY POWERThe Coromandel can be fitted easily

with an inboard engine but for those whorequire an outboard for reasons of cost orease of servicing the Coromandel has alockable easily accessible vented outboardwell in the starboard quarter, designed totake a 3 to 9 HP short shaft outboardmotor. It enables the outboard engineeffectively to become an inboard, easy toaccess, and never having to be removedfor sailing.

"Newbridge design attends to detail. AtNewbridge we know it is not only important toget the overall design right, attention to detailis just as important. For example:-"

ACCOMMODATION"The Coromandel offers facilities whichwould be the envy of almost any other boat ofher length." Yachting Monthly.

The Coromandel is essentially a spaciousthree berth cruiser but with the ingeniousaddition of a good traditional hammock"she provides a great deal of fun and comfort for a crew or family of four. Access tothe cabin is easy through the large slidinghatch and below decks movement is comfortable with the very good headroom of4ft 9ins. A separate enclosed toilet compartment with built in wet hanging lockeris provided and three full length adultberths (2 forward and 1 deep wide quarterberth) ensure comfort at night and plentyof space during the day. The galley, soneatly stowed away when not in use,

houses a cooker, plenty of stowage spaceand a splendid swing round, multi function table. There is even a fold away sink, hidden when nofin use, but deep andpractical draining away to sea when inuse. In all with plenty of safe windowsand a large glass forehatch the cabin islight, airy and very snug. There is lots ofdry storage under bunks, on shelves andin cave lockers, and there is even a dryhanging locker on the starboard side tocomplement the wet locker in the heads. The interior decor planning has beencarried out by a Design Council appointeddesigner to ensure the highest standardsof comfort both visually and practically.

PERFORMANCE"The Coromandel will provide its ownerswith adventure, family enjoyment and offshore cruising safety, superbly matched tothe ease of handling of the Chinese rig in asuperlative manner not attained by any othersmall yacht".

The Coromander's wonderfully efficientChinese rig ensures ease of handling anda good turn of speed with less mast loading and consequently less crew tensionwhich adds up to a more comfortable andgenerally faster passage, with much lessheeling. The Chinese rig is faster off thewind and on a reach than the Bermudanrig - into the wind it is about the same orperhaps not quite so close winded. However, the difference is so small as to be ofno importance to the cruising man, particularly since the many other advantages ofthe Chinese rig more than compensate. The rig is simple to handle with just twobasic control lines.

All the sailing is done from the cockpitand since the boat heels only very slightlylife aboard is more comfortable. Thewhole bUl'iness of sail handling can beforgotten, reefing is no longer a chore anda worry; with the Chinese rig it takesliterally seconds and can be done sitting

down in the cockpit, whilst tacking and.gybing merely involve putting the helmover. The Coromandel has the necessaryclassic fine bow entry and profile withpositive sheer to ensure that she is capableof taking any weather and sea whilstremaining safe, predictable and easy tohandle.

Her long keel configuration in eitherbilge or fin keel form gives her directionalstability and her skeg supported rudderassists with this whilst greatly strengthening the whole rudder assembly. TheCoromandel has a high ballast ratio toprovide great inherent stability. Althoughwith the Chinese rig deck work is greatlyreduced, her fore deck and side deckingsare generously supplied with non slip surfaces. The anchor and chain has its ownself draining locker in the bows.

CONCLUSIONThe Chinese rig is now a familiar sight

around our coasts, much loved by cruisingfamilies for its easy, relaxed characteristics. The Coromandel is designed to makethe most of your sailing and leisure time.

"[ was overwhelemed by the Coromandel. You have got it just right, many thanks for acharming boat."
